The Plate: Filmmakers With Jobs | Independent Film Blog

Is your plate too full?

How many people experience this problem?

Who hasn’t?

It’s important to learn how to prioritize your life with so much going on.  I’m still learning that skill. It’s not easy.

I’m having one of those weeks where it seems like there aren’t enough hours to get everything done.  The solution?

I’ve focused only on the things that NEED to be done.

For example, I have a career outside of the movies, websites and screenplays.  Paying bills is always number 1.  (It helps that editing pro sports is really fun.)

But I’m not always at work.

The Climb Short Film Toronto

The Climb is now about 6-7 weeks away from shooting and it’s been a busy week of planning.

The other day I woke up and fired off a series of emails confirming our massive make-up/wardrobe/rehearsal day in a few weeks.  With everyone confirmed it was time to focus on what should be the final draft of the script.  (I wrote about that earlier.)

The new draft is now completed and I was genuinely excited to send it out to the cast and crew. It has a brand new ending that strengthens what I want the movie to be.  I say new ending but it’s more like a reimagined version of the original ending.  Just a few small changes that made a huge difference.

We’re still finalizing the tattoo make-up for Destiny and it’s coming along gloriously.  I’m so happy with the overall look of the design.  Alex is doing a great job.

I’ve also got a producer hat on but it’s Eric who is really the MVP behind the scenes.  Today we went over the films meager budget to ensure we’ll have everything we need come May.  It’s hard to believe we are already gathering tape stock and equipment.  It’s coming so fast!

In less than two weeks we’ll be traveling to the main location to rehearse on site and I’ll be filming some of the run throughs.

You may even see some test footage up on this blog soon after.

Things are moving forward nicely. Once the rehearsal is over, I get to go into director mode and really start planning the shots and moments I want to achieve.  I’ll have a month to get my act together.  More than enough time considering I’ve been thinking about this movie for 4 years.

We’re making a movie!

Note: Actually, we’re making 2 but Strings is a ways off yet.  Still on the plate but it’s not taking up a lot of space.

The Athletic Nerd: Screenwriting

I’ve been in hardcore screenwriting mode for a few weeks now and there’s no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

I’ll be putting my latest projects on hold for the month of April and May to focus on the movie but this summer is all about shorts and features.  For now, I’m mainly working on the new feature and developping a couple shorts.  One of which is a cartoon.  My first.

Screenwriting is by far my favorite passion in life.  It’s hard to put it on the back burner but truthfully, I’ll probably still sneak in a few hours here and there to write.

The Athletic Nerd by Jason McKinnon

This blog is now over 6 months old with nearly 200 entries.

200 posts!

This blog has been a dream of mine for a long time and it’s been a blast building up the brand.  I’ve set my goals extremely high for this site and I’m no where near them yet but I’m certainly committed to achieving them.

Lately, screenwriting has taken over most of the posts but I’ll be switching gears to regular film updates again as we continue towards The Climb’s shooting dates.  I say this lightly but there is a strong possibility that 6 posts a week may be too much for the remainder of the production process.  Don’t be alarmed if there are a few stretches without updates.

The Lesson

I used to have a tendency to bite off more than I could chew.  Another food comparison but my plate has been full numerous times in the past.  What I have learned is that prioritizing the work load is key.  There was a time when I would become a ghost for months and bury myself in my work.

Those days are long gone because I know that you aren’t nearly as creative or inspired without stopping to live a little too!

So instead of cracking down and setting ambitious deadlines, I’m just working.  Making progress.

Oh by the way, I’ll be taking a week off starting Friday!

I’m taking a little time to recharge before The Climb revs up!

PS: When I say week off I mean it.  Actual days off!

Future Shop DVD

Ah cheap DVDs…  The best way to buy the movies you never knew you always wanted…

I can’t resist a bin full of DVD’s for $5.99 or less.  This section of electronic stores like Future Shop and Best Buy just seem to shine brighter especially when you only go in to buy an ink cartridge.

This is whyI went into Future Shop last week.  I’ve got some new screenplays on the horizon that need to be printed out and I was hurting for ink.

So I went in to purchase some paper and a new cartridge but the tractor beam of the cheap DVD bin got me again!

I walked out with 5 new DVDs to add to my collection.

Who doesn’t love rummaging through cheap DVDs hoping to find that one classic you’ve been scouring the planet to find.

The only thing better?

Used DVDs at Blockbuster.  It’s like a candy store!

It’s time to reorganize my DVD shelves.  A nerdy thing to do but a nerdy thing I love…

Oh and what about those 5 new DVDs?

  1. Garden State
  2. I Am Sam
  3. The Mask
  4. JCVD
  5. Jerry Seinfeld: I’m Telling You For The Last Time.

The Climb Short Film Toronto

Improving a screenplay is pretty much a fancy way of describing rewrites.

The Climb has been through a lot of rewrites during the pre-production process and I’m at it again with 7 weeks to go until production is set to begin.

Why?

Improvements can always be made. Over the last few weeks I’ve been giving myself brain cramps trying to make the script as strong as possible leading into next week’s rehearsals.

I had a breakthrough.

A subtle change in one of the film’s crucial scenes has elevated the tension and the story to another level.

Without giving away any spoilers, the film used to revolve around a specific action a character takes. It now completely revolves around an interesting relationship that I can’t wait to see brought to life this May.

For the rest of the week I’ll be implementing these little tweaks and improvements before sending out the latest draft to the cast and crew.

This is really going to be a work in progress right up until we wrap and I’m loving the direction this movie is taking.

I think it’s important to always be mindful of the story while remaining open to changes as the movie takes shape. I’m going to keep doing everything I can so I can look back and truly be proud of the finished screenplay.

This way, when the cameras roll, I’ll be completely confident that every angle was considered and every line scrutinized right up until I yell action for the first time.

Another rewrite? No.

Vital improvements? Yes.

I’m more focused than ever.

The Climb’s shoot is approaching and the second we wrap, I’ll be putting my editing hat on once again.  I’m very excited! I love editing movies.

Besides the odd film project, I’ve been a professional editor working full time in television for nearly 5 years now.

Time flies.

Editing sports for a living is definitely a dream job that I absolutely adore. Creating new content for live television in a fast paced environment is extremely satisfying and addictive.

It gives me a chance to be creative everyday while surrounded by the sporting events I would be watching whether I’m at work or not.

But I’m also passionate about editing films.

For me it begins with the need to tell a story. As a screenwriter, I accomplish this through my scripts but editing countless hours of footage into an entertaining movie is incredibly fun and challenging.

There’s something about finishing a scene and being extremely proud of the work you accomplished.  Even if it’s not quite perfect, editing is much like rewriting a screenplay and I’m obsessed with both.

Playing Through was the last short film I edited. It took about 2 months to lock the final cut and I had an absolute blast.  I miss it.

Whether it’s television or movies, you have so many choices and directions to take a project. It’s almost hypnotizing to be able to sift through multiple takes and sculpt the best movie you can.

It’s been a while since my iMac saw some action. I think it’s time I changed that.

It begins with The Climb.

Rainy Sundays Movie Picks

This week’s pick makes me angry because I haven’t thought to write about it yet…

The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption

From a screenwriting perspective, it’s one of my favorites.  It’s such an incredible story and the writing is truly tremendous.

From a Sunday perspective, it’s simply a perfect movie to enjoy on a lazy afternoon especially when it’s raining outside.  These types of slow building dramas are always a good choice on days when you just want to relax.

The Shawshank Redemption, for those who haven’t seen it, is about an innocent man serving 2 life sentences in prison.  It almost seems criminal to describe it in such a general way.  The movie is so much more than a prison drama.

This is one of my favorite examples of how important characters are to a story.  Andy and Red are among the best in terms of fully developped and interesting characters. You’ll have to excuse me for using ‘writery’ terms but I really geek out about this movie.

There are two things you should take from this post.

  1. I’m a nerd…. Shocking…
  2. The Shawshank Redemption is an amazing movie.
