Wolves Are Scary, Liam Is Bad Ass But The Grey Falls Short | The Grey Movie Review

A PROMISING TRAILER PROMISED TOO MUCH

I was really excited to see The Grey.  Over the last few years, Liam Neeson has proven that he can take on anything with movies like Taken & Unknown.  Liam vs Wolves made perfect sense to me.  I absolutely adored the first 10-15 minutes of The Grey.  Liam’s character Ottway is established as a quiet hunter with a long lost love.  All I could think about was the inevitable clash between Ottway and a pack of angry wolves with glass taped to his knuckles…

At the end of the day, I was a little disappointed with the penultimate ‘clash’.  But that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy the ending.  Lets just say there better be a big awesome deleted scene on the Blu Ray.  Regardless, I think it was fitting ending given the story director Joe Carnahan was trying to tell.  The Grey is a good movie.

Wolves Are Scary, Liam Is Bad Ass But The Grey Falls Short | The Grey Movie Review

It’s a gorgeous survival tale full of tense moments and crazy wolf attacks.  (Although I have to say the attack in Adam Green’s Frozen was a little more intense.)  The wolves themselves were pretty sweet and the situation the men find themselves in is terrifying.  I’ve always said that I’d never go on vacation near snow because freezing to death is one of my biggest fears.  I now have two reasons to avoid Alaska.

My main problem with the movie is that, aside from Ottway’s back story, there isn’t much else going on except a group of men trying to survive.  There really weren’t many surprises and most of the kills happen in the order you expect.  That’s why this movie is better suited to be rented.  However, since it is a relatively slow month, I suppose a trip to the theater wouldn’t be a complete waste.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Patience | Review
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Patience | Rent the movie

SOMETIMES SLOW MOVIES PAY OFF IN A BIG WAY!

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy was #8 on my list of Must See 2011 movies…  That I missed.  Now that I’ve seen it, I think it would have been right at home in my top 5.  It’s a fantastic movie.

The first hour or so I found myself wondering where it was going.  The only thing you really know for sure is a mole exists and he/she must be found.  The story unfolds in a series of flashbacks and quick scenes and jumps around quite a bit.  Sometimes, it can be distracting and hard to follow but Tinker manages to stay interesting.  Perhaps fascinating is a better word for it.  It reminded me of The Insider with Russell Crowe and Al Pacino.  That movie unfolded very slowly but I absolutely loved it.

So yes, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy requires patience but it all pays off in the end.  The further into the story you get, the more engrossing it becomes.  I was glued to the screen when the answers to my questions arrived.

Ironically, I was slow getting out to see the film in theaters.  Having said that, if you haven’t seen it yet, you may as well wait to rent it.  It the type of movie meant for quiet Sunday afternoons spent on a comfortable couch with a blanket.  (I would include a really well made sandwich too.)

The Athletic Nerd Movie Reviews Are Evolving | Movie Blog

THE CINEMATIC EXPERIENCE

Reviews will be getting an update in 2012.  When I began reviewing new releases, I wanted to write about the cinematic experience rather than simply putting down some thoughts and a score.

Over years I’ve written tons of reviews covering the journey to the theater, loud people, inspiring moments and what movies mean to me.  Beyond that, my reviews are about the films that inspire the aspiring filmmaker.

…  But why not include a scoring system anyways?

So this year, I’m including two new features to the existing review format.  First, a scoring system based on when you should see the movie instead of a score out of 10 or stars.

Here it is:

The Athletic Nerd Movie Review Scale

Click the image for details on the new review scale though I feel like it’s pretty self explanatory.

The other new feature is something I like to call Review In 2.  More on that when the first review arrives!

The Athletic Nerd's Top 5 Movies Of 2011

This year’s top 5 is kind of incomplete.  I started off 2011 on a tear.  I had seen so many movies including nearly all of the summer blockbusters.  But when it came down to the awards season, I missed out on a ton of great movies.  So while I wait for films like The Descendents & The Artist to be released On Demand, I have to go with what I’ve seen.

This year’s top 5 includes several that inspired the filmmaker in me including the awesome movie sitting in the number 1 spot.  As a result, I don’t think there is a movie I missed that could knock out this year’s champ.  It’s a film that I’m proud to put next to 2009′s Paranormal Activity and 2010′s Inception.

5. Source Code

Source Code really surprised me.  I highly enjoyed Duncan Jones’ Moon and he raised the bar even higher with Source Code.

4. 50/50

50/50 was a perfect balance of humor and drama.  Personally, I was really interested to see how this movie accomplished that balance.  About 3 years ago, I created a film with similar themes that also balanced humor with the serious subject of cancer.  Watching 50/50 was a phenomenal experience as both a filmmaker and a film fan.

It was touching, sad, enlightening, inspiring, funny, depressing, interesting and heart warming.  Seth Rogen & Joseph Gordon-Levitt are a perfect team.

3. Drive

The last movie I saw in 2011 skyrocketed up my rankings to land in the top 5.  It’s such a well told and stylized film with a wicked performance from Ryan Gosling.

2. Warrior

Warrior wins the award for longest wait.  I couldn’t find the time to see it in theaters and when it was released on video I still couldn’t set aside a couple hours to watch.  It was well worth the wait.  I loved Warrior.

1. Super 8

I grew up in the 80s making movies with my friends.  We used to walk to the dollar store, purchase toy guns and spray paint them black as we completed our action movies, war epics and comedies.  This movie was made for me.  Super 8 inspired me and it still does when I think about how much fun I had in the theater that day.  (And how much fun I had making movies as a kid.)

2011s top movie…  Super 8.

The Athletic Nerd's 2011 Movie Reviews

2011 started strong.  I was averaging a movie review per week but sadly it did not last.  I’m pretty disappointed in my film intake over the last 5-6 months.  I’ve only seen a few new releases since September but that streak won’t last either.  Another year is upon us with tons of sweet looking flicks on the horizon.

Before I dive into another year of reviews on this blog, I wanted to rank the reviews I wrote last year.  These rankings don’t necessarily reflect the quality of the movies but rather the thoughts the movies inspired.  I write about the movie experience and what I felt sitting in the theater.

Next year, it is my goal to raise the bar with my reviews.  I can’t wait to get started.
