Earlier in the week, I updated you on the gigantic strings meeting we had on Saturday.  It was the main event of my huge list of tasks I wanted to get caught up on.

Click here to check out how epic the list actually was.

My days off are now behind me and here’s where we stand:

Strings

Strings now has a brand new shooting draft that I finished up yesterday. It’s always nice to finish a rewrite that doesn’t sacrifice story yet comes in 3.5 pages lighter.  I spent a lot of time trying to think of more interesting ways to stage scenes and really strengthened my descriptions.  Usually, I’ll tweak a lot of dialogue as well but those scenes worked really well so I left them alone.

We’ve also spent the last few days gathering paperwork together and composing letters with Ian overseeing the process.  We’re definitely on our way with this short film.

The Climb

I really need the snow to melt so we can start the location scouting.  Our two main actors have now read the new draft of the script and are just as excited to get started.

I spent some time over the last few days reading the script and really nailing down the visual style I have planned for the film.

Web Design

Here is a category that I destroyed over the last few days. There were a lot of housekeeping duties to perform on the sites.  A lot of little things needed to be done and it adds up quickly.  17west.ca received the bulk of the work. (More on that later.)  All in all, I’d say 70% of Tuesday was spent working on the websites.

I also continued working on the new look jaymckinnon.com.  I don’t think I’ll be making any big changes until the summer but getting a start never hurts.

Beyond that, theathleticnerd.com got some new logos, graphics and posts.  Many of which I’ll be rolling out in the next week or so.

I basically made sure I was fully caught up as we get closer to our deadlines for the films.  I can honestly say, I’m completely caught up on all my web design work.  It’s a great feeling.

Screenwriting

I managed to crank out the new draft of Strings which is a big check mark on my list.

Last night I spent a lot of time with my new feature. I didn’t finish the number of pages I wanted to but progress is always a plus.  It helps that this project has no deadline.

In addition to that, I officially started gathering notes for a new short that may end up being Eric’s next short film.  I’m not entirely sure when I’ll start writing it but the development is well on it’s way.

Whew!

“Find a job you love, never work a day in your life”

Weeks like this can get pretty crammed with work but they are important in order to stay on top of things.  As of today, I have no more pressing work digging a whole in my brain.  I now face about 6 weeks of relatively free time to be social and work on NEW material.

Until then, I’ll be updating often.

Over the weekend, Eric and I travelled to Sudbury, Ontario to meet with the other 2 producers of the upcoming short film Strings. This new film is nearly 80% music and completely different than anything we’ve ever done.  I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Did I mention I’m addicted to this stuff?

I’m a massive fan of getting together with the ‘brass’ of a project to plan out the production.  (See my earlier post for details on a similar meeting we had for The Climb) We went over every single aspect of the film and I’m beyond pumped to see how the next few months play out.  We are now equipped with a plan to pull this film off with the goal of creating a truly memorable short film.

It begins with the script.  I think it’s important as a screenwriter to understand that the script is merely a starting point for a much larger collaboration to take place.  I think it’s absolutely vital to be open to changes.  Going into the meeting, we all felt the concept, story and characters were strong.  Yet still we went over every detail of the story and constantly challenged ourselves to make it better.

I love talking about stories in general.  Ask anyone who knows me and they will tell you to clear your schedule if you plan to ask me about anything related to film.  Add more people and the conversations become hall of famers.

Sitting around talking about character motivations and questioning every single word is a really nerdy thing to be addicted to.  I feel I’ve named my blog accordingly.

What I love about the process as a writer is listening to the suggestions that are being made using them as inspiration to come up with new and better ideas.  The movie is better as a result.  I’m now armed with a small but significant list of changes that will improve the script immensely.  It’s the tiny details that count and I can’t wait to get started on the rewrite.

From there we went over budgets and logistics to make sure Director Mat Cousineau will have everything he needs on set to shoot the movie he wants to make.  It’s a process that will take a few months but we now have a solid starting point to build on.

Here is where Producers Ian MacDonald and Eric Gamache become MVPs.  Both are extremely dedicated and are huge assets to the production.  Now that our plan is in place we have begun operation ‘make it happen’.  It sounds relatively straight forward but there are always curve balls that producers must face.  Forgive the analogy (and the cheese) but our producers can hit the curve.

We all have fairly detailed lists of tasks we need to accomplish in the coming weeks.  So far we’re way ahead of the game in terms of planning and setting goals.  This film has an extremely talented cast of actors and singers on board and the only real concern I have left is having to endure the long wait before we get to shoot this film.

As Mat famously said back in college:

“There’s a process!!!”

Ahh the process.  I love making movies.

PS: The above quote has absolutely nothing to do with movies.  Ask me another time and I’ll explain why it’s one of the funniest things he’s ever said.

PS #2: I’m trying to keep this blog clean so I omitted the F-bombs associated with the quote.

Tomorrow, I’ll be heading to a gigantic meeting to help plan out another project 17 West is involved with.  It’s a short film called Strings and it’s being produced by (Dir) Mat Cousineau and (Prod) Ian MacDonald.

I can’t wait for this meeting as we’ve been working on this project since June of last year and it’s really beginning to take shape.  We had a similar meeting a few weeks ago regarding The Climb and I was extremely happy with the results.  I’m a huge fan of the process and pre-production is definitely a fun time for me.

Check out Director Mat Cousineau’s blog here.

After that meeting, I’ve got 4 days off to accomplish a pretty lengthy list of tasks that I’m excited to tackle.

Yesterday, I finally locked the shooting draft of The Climb and sent it out to the cast.  Now, it’s time to start the design process.  Without spoiling much, one of the main characters has a pretty crazy looking tattoo and I’m super pumped (that’s my way of saying… very excited) to finally work on the look.  Beyond that, I’ll be starting my unique storyboarding process.

I say unique because I can’t draw and pretty much describe the shots using complete sentences and stick figures. (Storyboard artists living in the GTA apply within.)

Writing

My main goal is to have at least one full day to write and break some new ground.  I spent a lot of time over the last few weeks tweaking the script for The Climb and now that it’s locked, I’m excited to continue with other projects.

I’m hoping to put a big dent in the remaining pages of my new feature script. (Details coming soon.)  I’m also considering writing another short film based on a pretty crazy concept that Eric may direct in the fall.

Web Design

Another goal I have over the next week is to finish working on a new graphic look for jaymckinnon.com.  I’m happy with the overall look for now but I want to introduce an updated design that fully incorporates The Athletic Nerd.  It’s not really a priority yet but I think it’s important to focus on the details while I have time to do so.

I’m also planning a series of new graphics for both 17 West and The Athletic Nerd. None of these projects are a priority but they still represent unfinished projects I’ve been working on lately.

It sounds like a lot to handle but I’m not under the gun as many of these projects are still months away from completion.  It certainly helps that I have a blast working on them. I just think it’s important to stay on top of things before the deadlines get closer.

Ironically, when I was in school, I was a massive procrastinator and rarely started a project until the night before it was due.  Times change.

The Goal

I have no intentions of completing everything on my list.  (I haven’t even named everything I’m working on right now)  My main concern is to stay ahead of the game with the films and write my brains out whenever I can find time.

And as always, I’ll be writing about all of it here.  Bring it on!

PS: It’s also good to stay ahead because as I have a lot of fun plans coming up as well:)  I can’t ALWAYS be working.

Strings Update: The Cast

January 9th, 2010 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in 17 West | Filmmaking | Strings - (0 Comments)

Strings Short Film Sudbury

Strings is a short film being produced in Sudbury Ontario.  17 West Productions is co-producing the film with UnoPark for director Mat Cousineau.

Guest Post by Mat Cousineau

Alright… so a lot has been going on lately with the flick.

Jason and Eric came up to Sudbury from Toronto and we had a 4 hour long meeting ironing out details and getting the ball rolling.

We’ve determined a plan of attack including a shoot date of august, a shooting style, budget, and what most exciting to me is that we spent a good amount of time working on the story and tweaking a few things.

Click here for writer Jason McKinnon’s perspective on the meeting.

We also made some decisions on the cast which we are very very excited about. I can’t say enough about the artists we’ve chosen, I don’t think we could have ended up with a more talented group of individuals. Paul Disalle will be taking on the lead male role and Jennifer Plummer will be our lead female.

Check out the official press release and photos of our cast here.

The greatest thing about these two is that after the auditions, once we decided that we wanted these two, we found out that they are actually good friends who jam together frequently.  Both Paul and Jennifer are well known in Sudbury and play local venues often. They have both released a studio album and are currently working on new music.  I actually spoke to both of them today and they’re both as excited as we are about the project.

Talents like Paul and Jennifer are exactly why I wanted to make a film like this. Too many times I see an artist at a show and I think “I wish I could share this experience with more people”. My goal with this film is to open peoples eyes to new music, new styles, new artists they may not have known and at the same time maybe strike some chords with the story a broken relationship and how the couple find closure in their music.

So now the game plan is to get a little more serious as far as filling holes… Over the coming weeks we’ll be filling crew positions and tweaking the music and lyrics from the songs we’ve chosen. We’ll also continue the search for the few songs we still need for certain moments in the film.

More updates are on the way!

Strings Short Film Sudbury

Strings is a short film being produced in Sudbury Ontario.  17 West Productions is co-producing the film with UnoPark for director Mat Cousineau.

Guest Post by Mat Cousineau

In a nut shell, I started 17 West with Eric and Jay as we finished up college. Over time, I fell out of filmmaking as I was a little bit too busy with other things in life. However, I’ve kept in the loop with 17 West and helped out where I could but I definitely wasn’t as involved as much as I wanted to be over the last couple of years.

Recently I’ve moved back home to Sudbury, ON, where we are all from. I join Eric and Jay as a proud ‘Northerner’ and I decided it was time to return to filmmaking. So began our ‘Northern Branch’ of 17west. Our first effort is a short film entitled Strings. A project I will be producing and directing.

Two of my biggest passions in life are film and music. My family is full of musicians and I play a little guitar myself.  It’s always been a dream of mine to make a film that was told through music. I’m talking about a musical where the actors sing to the audience. I’m talking about a film where the music is part of the actual story. In fact, a film where music comprises nearly 100% of the story.

So I challenged Jay to write me a script where the story was told through music. A story where the characters were playing music to themselves and each other. When Jay sent me the first draft of “Strings” I was ecstatic! It was exactly what I was looking for.

Now I’m faced with the biggest challenge I’ve faced in the film industry yet. Finding the right musicians and more importantly the right songs for the script.

About a two months ago we had our first audition session. Now I have to say it was a huge success thanks to Ian MacDonald, a co producer we brought on board here in Sudbury.

We had over 60 people show up to audition and out of those people, I found a good dozen I would consider putting in the film. I have to say, I was extremely pleased with the talent we found in Sudbury and I’m looking forward to sharing all of it with you. Click here for more about the audition as well as links to some press we received. The game plan at this point is to set up a second audition with those dozen and start making some decisions.

For now you are up to date with the pre-production of Strings. I can’t express how excited I am about this film. I plan to have some more updates soon and I might even share with you an MP3 of one of the songs we plan on using.
