Game Of Thrones Moment: A Man Without Honor | Season 2 Episode 7 Review

SEASON 2 EPISODE 7
“A MAN WITHOUT HONOR”

And so we enter the second half of the unbelievable second season of Game of Thrones.  A Man Without Honor wasn’t as action packed as the last few chapters but it was still full of important moments.  Last week, I complained slightly about Daenerys storyline in Qarth.  It felt like the whole arc had stalled.

Thankfully, she seems to have finally hit rock bottom which, to me, means action is coming soon.  Daenery’s is now completely demoralized in her quest for the iron throne.  She has no army, no boats and most importantly, no dragons.  I was a little surprised that the Warlock flat out tells her where her dragons are.  Having said that, I loved that scene and so this week’s moment is dedicated to Xaro’s rise.

Game Of Thrones Moment: A Man Without Honor | Season 2 Episode 7 Review

I pretty much assumed the warlock character was behind the dragon-napping but Xaro’s scheme to become King of Qarth was most definitely unexpected.  Is it just me or was that a lot of slit throats? And what’s with that Warlock guy?

Now Daenerys in THE worst position but I’m happy with that.  Next week it’s time to fight for her dragons and probably avoid marrying Xaro.

A Man Without Honor

The rest of the episode was full of character development.  We explored John Snow’s thoughts on his oath and dedication to the Night’s Watch.  We now know that Tywin isn’t completely oblivious to Arya’s act and ‘back story’.  We got a phenomenal scene between Tyrion and Cersei and the Queen also shared a womanly moment with Sansa.

But the most important moment (and runner up for the title this week) was Jaime Lannister’s antics while imprisoned.  Especially in the end when he is face to face with Cat.  Great scene.  The only reason it didn’t win the ‘Moment of the Week’ was because of the cliff hanger ending.  Otherwise, it was a shoe in.

I don’t really buy Theon’s ‘victory’ at the end.  I may not have read the books but I’m pretty sure the two stark boys are still alive and kicking.  (Well…  One of them at least.)  Time will tell.

All in all, it feels like we are in for one hell of an episode next week.  This one felt like a setup and with a handful of episodes left, it’s going to be a blast to see where the cards fall.

SEASON 2 EPISODE 6
“THE OLD GODS AND THE NEW”

This episode was up and down for me but it did come with one unforgettable moment we’ve all been thinking about since day 1.  Someone threw a big chunk of crap in King Joffrey’s face.  As if that wasn’t enough, Tyrion finally (and literally) tried to knock some sense into his nephew.

“We’ve had vicious kings and we’ve had idiot kings, but I don’t know that we’ve ever been cursed with a vicious idiot.”

So this week’s moment goes to Tyrion once again.  It’s mind boggling that Joffrey is this clueless proclaiming that an entire mob be put to death while they are rising up against him.  It’s sad that Tyrion will never get through to him now that he’s caused a war and everyone hates him.  It’ll be interesting to see what Joffrey does now that people have begun to revolt.  It’ll ALSO be interesting to see what he does to Tyrion for slapping him.

I’m so happy we still have over half a season left.

The Old Gods And The New

As I mentioned above, the rest of the episode was hit or miss for me.  The events in Winterfell were certainly compelling especially with that brutal beheading at the hands of newly evil Theon.  Robb Stark’s reaction to the news was awesome.  We really don’t get enough Robb though it’s nice that his mother returned and he is finally up to speed on everything.

Arya is still trying to keep her identity safe though it would appear her anonymity will be short lived.  She has now wasted a ‘name’ to protect herself but WHY hasn’t she ordered one of those fancy darts to strike the neck of Tywin?  Problem solved right?

Jon Snow and Daenerys’ story lines felt like stall tactics in this episode.  Jon volunteered to join the men and then couldn’t kill the Wildling girl…  The fact that she knew his name was interesting but I’d like to know where it’s going.  Is the North going to invade Westeros at some point?  What will they find now that they are beyond the wall? (Maybe I should read the books)

As for Daenerys, she is still clinging to hope that someone will hand her an army and now she doesn’t even have her dragons.  At some point, this girl needs to show the Qarth folk who is boss.  We are all rooting for her at this point but no one listens to her.  She needs to do some convincing next episode.

SEASON 2 EPISODE 5
“THE GHOST OF HARRENHAL”

Season One was memorable because at any given moment, a major character could fall.  Nobody was untouchable and so many perished in unexpected and compelling twists.  This season promises much more of the same as there can only be one on the iron throne but it hasn’t happened yet…  Until Episode 5 that is.

My biggest fear after last week’s smoke monster finale was an episode free of the Stannis/Renly storyline.  Thankfully, The Ghost of Harrenhal picks up right were the black smokey birth left off.  This episode presented several interesting moments but none greater than the smoke monster’s murder of Renly Baratheon.

Renly Baratheon game of thrones

Choosing a moment that occurs within the first 5 minutes of an episode kind of hints that the rest of the episode is sub bar.  Quite the opposite.  I chose this moment because it’s mentioned throughout.  Renly’s death coupled with his banner men joining Stannis reaches every corner of the world quickly.

Stannis now possesses a massive army of men and a huge fleet of ships.  And the other players reacted accordingly.  In King’s Landing, Joffrey prepares for the siege with fire much to Tyrion ‘Don’t call me a Demon Monkey’ Lannisters dismay.  Out in Qarth, Daenerys sees it as her opportunity to strike with so much chaos in Westeros.  The Robb vs Tywin war will certainly be impacted by the news and the list goes on.

Renly’s death was a catalyst and a perfect way for the writers to sum up where everyone stands in the war.

Even more important was the realization that Stannis’ men have begun to suspect Melisandre (who was curiously absent in this episode) as a master manipulator and the true reason for the army’s ‘good fortunes’.  It was a great time to cast a little doubt that her intentions aren’t…  Ahem… noble.

UPDATE: It’s tough to tell who would win in a fight between this smoke monster and the one from Lost…  But Stannis and Melisandre’s smoke baby is certainly ruthless.  All the Lost monster did was throw people around for the most part…

THE GHOST OF HARRENHAL

The rest of the episode was mostly made up of characters reacting to Renly’s death.  However, as the dominos began to fall, Arya finally got some revenge.  Last week I wondered how long she would suffer before something good happened.  Enter Jaqen H’ghar, a man she saved, who pledges 3 kills in payment and all she has to do is provide names.

Immediately, she takes out The Tickler but it’s interesting that she didn’t choose Tywin first.  King Joffrey and Tywin HAVE to be on her list right?  Right?

We’ll have to wait and see next week.

SEASON 2 EPISODE 4
“GARDEN OF BONES”

Episode 1 Moment
Episode 2 Moment
Episode 3 Moment

She gave birth to smoke!  A smoke baby…  A shadow-light-smoke-monster-baby!  That’s a great way to win this week’s Game of Thrones moment.

Last week, I talked about the battle that would kickstart the action in season 2 and Garden of Bones went above and beyond.  It was by far the most interesting episode of the season that also featured the return of Robb Start and Daenerys Targaryen.  But it was the episode’s shady final moments that truly lit up screen.

Melisandre has been a mystery this entire season.  Surviving poisonous wine is one thing but giving birth to a smoke monster was definitely a game changer.  What the hell is that thing and how does Stannis plan to use it to win the war?  Is he going to send his mystical “son” to his brother’s tent or directly to King’s Landing?  What is Melisandre end game here?  Did she tell Stannis that she would be giving birth to smoke?

Tons of questions and that is why Game of Thrones is awesome.

Game of Thrones Moment: Garden Of Bones | Season 2 Episode 4 Review

This moment was a fantastic reminder that ANYTHING is possible on this show and it’s only the 4th episode!

Garden of Bones

The rest of the episode was full of crazy moments specifically during scenes involving the ruthless punk King Joffrey.  He’s an ass.  Once again Tyrion is front and center to save Sansa from Joffrey’s torment.  And how does the King repay his Hand for embarrassing him?  By torturing two whores for fun…

Speaking of torture, Arya has to be one of the strongest characters on this show.  How she manages to witness a rat ripping people’s chests apart without flinching is nuts.  At one point are the writer’s going to give this girl some good news?  It’ll be interesting to see where she ends up now that Tywin is in the picture.

All in all, Garden of Bones raised the bar yet again.  This season has delivered 4 amazing episodes so far.

Until next week, there is a larger issue to discuss…  Who would win in a fight?

Inside The Edit: Dexter Opening Credits | Editing Blog

GOOD MORNING…  DEXTER MORGAN

I missed the first season of Dexter.  I didn’t watch a single episode but slowly, everyone around me started talking about Miami Metro’s loveable serial killer.  A trusted friend of mine swore it was a show I had to check out.  So I waited for the Season One box set.

I had no idea what to expect but it’s safe to say I was hooked the second I saw him smack that mosquito.  What a great way to introduce such a complex character.  Someone who appears unlikely to hurt a fly (or at least an innocent fly) smashes it with a devilish grin on his face.

Inside The Edit: Dexter Opening Credits | Editing Blog

This is Dexter.

The whole concept behind the opening titles is nothing short of brilliant.  Every single image is a beautiful balance suggesting this character is both likeable and…  Complicated?

Art of the Title posted an insightful interview with one of the minds behind the Dexter’s opening sequence.  Eric Anderson is a former creative director at Digital Kitchen and provided an inside look at the creation of the 2007 Emmy winner for most outstanding main title design.

“They kept using the word “mundane” over and over. They liked “Six Feet Under” and “Nip/Tuck” for how mundanely both titles dealt with what could have been a visually hyperbolized depiction of each show’s subject matter. This made me think how fascinated I am with crime scene photography, as a kid I loved looking through my grandfather’s “True Detective” magazine collection. Crime scene photographs contextualize mundane things giving those mundane things overwhelming and sinister importance. Along with this process of photographic evidence gathering comes an edgy anti-aesthetic, factually lit, mundanely framed, rawness. This proved to be a very important point for this piece.” (Art of the Title)

Art of the Title | Why do we love Dexter Morgan in the morning?

JUMP CUTS

Beyond the design of the opening titles, it’s the fantastic editing that fascinates me.  Throughout the years, I’ve learned that using jump cuts is a difficult skill to master.  It all boils down to instincts and feel.  It’s about pacing and style.  It’s a beautiful way to edit when it works.  But when it doesn’t, it can be confusing and disorienting to the audience.

The opening sequence in Dexter is full of creative jump cuts but they aren’t over used and non of them are disorienting.  When you’re selecting the frames to omit in a shot, it’s crucial that the action remains smooth.

That’s what I love about Dexter’s opening.  The jump cuts are skillfully created but used sparingly.  Subtle amounts of frames are removed to give speed up slow motion actions while communicating the overall message of the piece.  Dexter is anything but ordinary and neither is this morning routine.

DING!

Cutting to music is a ton of fun when you have a song with catchy beats to edit to.  But be honest, you weren’t expecting the Dexter theme were you?  I certainly wasn’t.  But it works because everything came into place.  The music compliments Dexter’s morning routine so well while keeping in line with the design and style of the opening.  Every beat is used to perfection through skillful editing and wonderfully staged moments.

Brilliant cuts…  (pun intended?)

Dexter is a phenomenal show for many reasons but for me, it’s special because it inspires me in so many ways.  Screenwriting, style, originality, suspense, twists, performance and of course the editing.

The awesome opening makes it very clear that you’re about to experience something unique.  It’s evident every time an episode begins that something special is in store.  Bring on the new season!
