The Athletic Nerd Movie News and Opinions

A lot has happened over the last week or so and I’ve written many posts as a result.

I thought I would take some time to write a round up of all the news from 17 West Productions and The Athletic Nerd in the last 7 days.

Here we go:

Definitely a productive week.

The Athletic Nerd is a LAMB!

March 8th, 2010 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies | Web - (0 Comments)

The Athletic Nerd by Jason McKinnon

I stumbled across a terrific website about a month ago called The Large Association Of Movie Blogs or LAMB.

I was very excited to be included on such a unique site so I submitted my blog and today it was posted so you can officially refer to The Athletic Nerd as a fellow LAMB.

I’m officially LAMB #457

Click here to check out the post.

I highly recommend you check out the blog and the other bloggers listed as their are a lot of talented and unique voices out there discussing films.

I’ll be posting a permanent link very soon to support this group!

Thanks again for the post!

17 West Productions

17 West is nearly 3 years old now. (Officially at least)

Saturday, Eric and I spend a few hours going over every single aspect of our company.

It’s our shareholders meeting.

These ‘brass’ meetings have become traditions that I look forward to as we only do them once or twice a year in addition to our regular production meetings.

First we went over all of our upcoming productions.

The Climb is set to be shot in May and we are continually planning ahead to make sure it all goes smoothly.  There is still a lot to be done in the next 7 weeks but we’re on top of it.

We also went over our co-production of Stringswhich is being produced in Sudbury Ontario this summer.  Everything seems to be progressing smoothly and I’m really excited for the next few months of pre-production.

We also discussed our plans for our completed films like Playing Through and 4 StopsWe’ll be announcing more about that in the future.

Next we talked about finances.  As a new company it’s important to stay organized and while it isn’t the most glamorous part of the business, it’s still a vital part to keep things moving forward.

Speaking of moving forward, we also talked about our future plans.  Eric will be taking the helm on our next project and there are several promising ideas we want to pursue.  What makes me happy is it’s now my turn to develop and write some of these ideas.

Screenwriting will always be my number 1 passion and I’m really looking forward to hammering out the details on some pretty exciting concepts we’ve come up with.

One of which, Cost, has already been scripted and is now officially awaiting the completion of our 2010 films and to a lesser extent…  Eric’s wedding this summer.

Note: Just kidding dude!

Next up on the list was the new design of ericgamache.com.

My site, jaymckinnon.com, was redesigned over the last month or so and we began preliminary sketches and concepts for Eric’s new look portfolio site.  Expect details and a relaunch very soon.

Beyond that, we also went over stories and movies we hope to be making some day and continued to adjust where we want to be in the next few years.

We’ve now clarified our goals as a company even further and I’m beyond pumped to see what 17 West will become in the coming years.

I love making movies!

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been busy designing a better looking and better functioning jaymckinnon.com.  When I first launched the site, I included a blog that would eventually become The Athletic Nerd.  As you’ll see in the screenshot of the ’old look’ below, the nerd is no where to be found.

This was one of the main problems with the site.  It definitely highlighted Playing Through but it lacked any promotion for my future projects.  It didn’t reference any of the work I’ve done thus far and so it didn’t really function well as a portfolio site…

Until today…

A quick glance at the new design points you directly to the three major projects in my life.  17 West, Playing Through and The Athletic Nerd.  Yet beyond that, you’ll also find information on my upcoming projects as well as a detailed filmography.

The look is a lot cleaner and more professional looking.  I think the style fits as you’ll recognize a lot of the graphics I use across the entire 17 West Network.

I’m also getting better at promoting other things like the popular ’10 Flicks’ feature on this blog and our YouTube channel.

Most importantly…

Going forward, I now have a content section that displays the top stories and will be easy to update.  This was the biggest flaw of Version 1.  I couldn’t change anything without manipulating the design in some way.  Version 2.0 is a lot better equipped to handle changes in the future.

The new Jaymckinnon.com probably won’t be the last time I redesign the site but it’s certainly a leap forward in terms of design.  It’s also one of the best site’s I’ve ever built from a coding standpoint.  This is probably my weakest area and I plan to keep learning improving.

Opinions are demanded! Comment if you like the new design. (Or if you prefer the old one for that matter.)

Blogging: Death Of A Category

February 15th, 2010 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Design | Web - (0 Comments)

The Athletic Nerd by Jason McKinnon

I’ve learned a lot about blogging and there is still a ton of information to absorb out there.  However, instead of learning new things about blogging today, I decided to take a step back and examine what I’ve already built.

I spent some time tweaking plug ins and cleaning up older posts.  I’ve created a bunch of new graphics over the last few weeks and it was time to go back and update the older posts with the new look.

Essentially, I spent some time on the little details.

I also spent some time looking over my tags and categories.  I may be new to the blogging world but I’m aware of how important organization is to a successful website.  I base this theory on my own browsing experiences.  I don’t like visiting blogs with hundreds of categories. It’s confusing and most of the time, these blogs only have 1 or 2 posts in each section.  Basic navigation should be simple and I’m not prepared to lose any precious readers because it was a hassle to find what they were looking for.  So I made a decision…

I’ve decided to kill a feature on my blog.

The Really!? feature will no longer be a part of The Athletic Nerd

Here’s why:

  1. 5 posts in 5 months is not enough.
  2. Rants about things that annoy me can still be categorized according to the topic they deal with.
  3. There’s no point flooding a new blog with features when you can simplify things and focus on better content.
  4. I won’t miss it.

The final point also represents the final nail in the coffin for the Really!? feature.  Much like screenwriting, if you can take out a scene and the movie still works, it probably didn’t belong in the story.  It’s the same thing with blogging.

It was time to move on.
