Battle Los Angeles & Super 8… Alien Movies!

THE PAST AND FUTURE OF MY FAVORITE GENRE
I’ve always been a fan of invasion movies and pretty much any film with aliens. The whole subject of space and all the limitless possibilities it contains fascinates me.
Through the years, there have been hundreds of imaginative films that fueled our curiosity and captivated us.
E.T The Extra Terrestrial
E.T definitely scared the crap out of me growing up. I couldn’t help it. He’s a squashy little alien with a huge head and a tiny neck. But that little alien is probably the most celebrated of all the movie creatures.
Steven Spielberg’s filmwasn’t about taking over the world. It was about the unknown. We stared at the screen wide eyed, wondering about all the different species that might exist out there. More than that, we wondered about how we would relate to them if we ever meet.
It’s an amazing train of thought that’s both inspiring and terrifying. E.T showed us a side of aliens we had never seen before.

Super 8
Years later, J.J Abrams appears to be returning to the simple fun of alien movies. With Steven Spielberg producing, Super 8 looks like J.J Abrams’ tribute to films like E.T and The Goonies that are precious to millions of film fans.
A new generation of filmmakers have begun to make their mark on the Alien genre. Today, more than ever, they possess incredible tools to help them realize their visions.
Old school storytelling. New school technology. Endless possibilities.
Even the soundtrack of this Superbowl spot sounds like a Spielberg movie doesn’t it?

Independence Day
ID4 captured our imaginations in an entirely different way. Instead of showing us the heart and soul of an Alien, the film depicted a ruthless and violent species bent of ruling our world.
Completely different types of films but the same entertaining result. Independence Day is quite simply, a fun movie to watch. An adventure about our struggle to survive if another race were to arrive with bad intentions. I wonder what Independence Day would look like if it were produced today?

Battle: Los Angeles
This is probably the closest thing yet except they seemed to mix in a little Saving Private Ryan for good measure.
Battle: Los Angeles looks like a dream come true for die hard Alien fans. Tons of creatures, ships, action, explosions, debris and state of the art effects. Again we are struggling to defeat the vicious invaders on our doorstep but this time, we are really going to get some high definition destruction.
A part of me thought Skyline would deliver some of the magic I’ve been craving since District 9… It didn’t but thankfully I have this film to look forward to.

Limitless Possibilities
I can’t think of a better pairing of films like Super 8 and Battle: Los Angeles to truly inspire the Alien movie fans of the world.
Bring on the creatures, invaders, wonder and fear.
I’m ready to be captivated again. Ready to be inspired.
