You’ve Never Seen That Movie!
April 23rd, 2010 | Posted by in MoviesI’m a huge fan of movies. If you’ve located this site, chances are you are in love with film as well. We are movie nerds.
- Movie nerds can usually recite lines from any movie they’ve ever seen.
- Movie nerds can spit out actors, directors, release dates, box office numbers and more for hours.
- Movie nerds are always picked first on game nights that include film trivia and pop culture.
Humor me for a moment…
I want all the movie nerds on the left side of the room and all the casual film fans on the right…
Look across the room. These two groups are vastly different but when it comes to selecting your favourite movie, we are all the same.
Whenever we talk about our beloved movies, we assume everyone else loves them just as much. Or else each and every person on both sides of the room will utter a phrase we’ve all heard hundreds of times:
“You’ve never seen that movie!”
A few weeks ago, I put up a post on my Facebook page asking people to name their favorite movie of all time. It was a social experiment to see how diverse the list would be.
Here are the responses I got:
Big Fish, Scarface, Annie Hall, Raging Bull, Chocolat, Tremors 3: Back To Perfection, Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Mr. Holland’s Opus, Apocalypse Now, Grease, Memento, Steel Magnolias, The Thomas Crown, Rainman, Scent Of A Woman, Glenn Garry Glenn Ross, Educating Rita, Goodfellas, Bullitt, Family Man, Office Space, Boondock Saints, A League Of Their Own, Die Hard, The Philadelphia Story, Behind The Green Door, The Godfather, Slapshot, The Warriors, The Shawshank Redemption, Signs, Cool Hand Luke, Gross Pointe Blanke Sleepers, There Will Be Blood, Citizen Kane, Double Indemnity, Pulp Fiction, Hard Core Logo, Chasing Amy, Shaun Of The Dead, Catch Me If You Can, Blood Diamond, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, The Basketball Diaries, A Clockwork Orange, Fight Club, The Birdcage, Falling Angels, Milk, Rear Window, American History X, The Terminator, Trainspotting, Braveheart, Apollo 13, Oceans 11, Blow, Bubba Ho-Tep, The Little Mermaid, Dr. Strangelove, Rocky, Gladiator
That’s a lot of movies.
- Really? You like that movie?
- I’ve never seen that.
- I haven’t seen that movie in years!
Millions of opinions and everyone is right.
Now I’d like everyone on the left and right sides of the room to meet at the middle. Ask your friend why they chose a certain movie. The answers are always personal and interesting. In a way, you can learn a lot about somebody by asking them a simple question like:
What’s your favorite movie?
Mine is M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs.

For those who have seen it, you may or may not be questioning why I love that movie so much. Truthfully, I’m inspired to write every time I watch it. It never fails. I’m always inclined to drop whatever I’m working on and write a brand new screenplay I can be proud of. Screenwriting is my passion and anything that fuels that passion deserves a spot on the top of my DVD shelf.
And… For those who haven’t seen it yet…
You’ve never seen that movie!
