I polled a bunch of people to try and come up with someone better than today’s big winner. Some came close like Dodgeball’s White Goodman but we couldn’t genuinely say they were as cocky as:
Shooter McGavin
The arrogant golf pro in Happy Gilmore is as cocky as they come. He is such an easy character to hate thanks to Christopher McDonald’s brilliant performance.
Happy Gilmore is one of the funniest movies ever made. (In my opinion of course.) Shooter deserves a lot of the credit. So many amazing one liners and quotes come from Shooter’s smug face.
“And you can count… On me waiting for you in the parking lot…”
A random movie appearance is defined as a character appearing on screen causing you to ask: Where did he/she/it come from? A random but ‘acceptable’ movie appearance is the same type of event but one you buy completely.
Picture this…
You’re being stalked by vicious Raptors. (They hunt in packs) You manage to outsmart them here and there and even kick one in the face but eventually you find yourself trapped regardless. (Clever girl…) They close in. You start to picture that horrific and intimidating claw ripping into your stomach as you’re eaten alive. All hope is lost… Until…
WHERE DID HE COME FROM?
Let’s assume for a second that there is some secret T-Rex doggy door that allowed him to enter the building. It’s not like he tip-toed into the place. I’m no expert but I don’t think Raptors and T-Rex engage in spirited rounds of hide and seek on a regular basis. Something that big couldn’t possibly sneak passed a bunch of Raptors and humans could it?
Obviously he didn’t crash through the ceiling. I can’t see him crawling through a smaller space either. Although having a T-Rex getting himself jammed in a small doorway would have been a great twist. Everyone dies and you see a close up of him saying:
“Sorry folks. I told them this door had to be bigger.”
If there was a door large enough, I like to think he was on a covert mission and having a lot of fun with it.
When I watch the film (which is one of my favorites) I can’t help but wonder what the T-Rex was thinking when he realized he actually pulled it off.
“Holy crap I can’t believe they haven’t spotted me yet! Tee hee hee”
But it leaves us all wondering just how did he get in there?
The thing is, the moment itself trumps the shady logic behind it. We don’t care that the T-Rex appears out of no where. We love watching him snatch that Raptor out of the air and launch him into a fossilized skeleton. So while the appearance may not have an explanation. I’m okay with it.
Last week’s release of the new Transformers Dark of the Moon trailer got me thinking about my favorite trailers of all time. Coming up with a list of 20 trailers is easy but settling on just one!? Not so simple. Especially when I’m ready to crown Transformers 3 because it’s the freshest in my mind. (I can’t wait to erase Revenge of the Fallen from my mind.)
It really comes down to personal preference and truly depends on the types of movies that inspire you. For me, the best trailers are for huge summer blockbusters. I can’t get enough of them. There have been tons of remarkable trailers for dramas and such as well but I’ve always been partial to the big time tent pole releases.
Still, here is my one of my favorite dramatic trailers:
Picking one was a really tough decision. A great trailer has to wow you. It has to get people talking. The perfect trailer shows you enough to get you excited but leaves much to be desired. A perfect trailer has a sense of mystery and intrigue.
Take the J.J Abrams produced Cloverfield for example:
The trailer for Cloverfield literally took over the internet as speculation went wild over what the movie was. Leaving the title out was a risky move but in the end it was brilliant because it got people talking. That trailer boosted the film onto many film lover’s radars.
Lets stick with Abrams for a moment. That man knows how to get people excited for a movie! Movies like Star Trek, Mission Impossible 3 and Super 8 have amazing trailers. I’ve never been a fan of Star Trek on the big or small screen but this trailer was phenomenal and sold me.
How about all the wonderful Star Wars memories that came roaring back when George Lucas unleashed the trailer for Episode 1: The Phantom Menace? What about the incredible power of The Dark Knight’s epic trailer?
I could go on forever listing trailers that I love but for the purpose of this post, I had to select one. In the end, the trailer I selected was for sentimental reasons not to mention the incredible feelings of anticipation it triggered.
THE MATRIX RELOADED
The Matrix is one of the coolest movies ever produced. It redefined the action genre and pushed the limits of visual effects to new heights.
The day I found out there would be two sequels was a happy day for me. From that day on, I searched the internet every single day for information on the sequel. This led to the discovery of other movies to look forward to and my daily movie news routine was born.
The Matrix Reloaded inspired me to follow the movies I love closely and began an obsession with the Matrix series. Then this trailer was released and I was absolutely blown away. At that time, no one had a clue where the Wachowski brothers would take the story. After viewing this trailer you still have no clue but you know it will be cool. That’s what a great trailer does.
When I was growing up, Disney movies were a staple in my life. We had tons of those white, over sized VHS cases on the shelf. Those wonderful tapes included classics such as Alladin, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast, Robin Hood, Peter Pan, Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Bambi, Dumbo, The Fox and the Hound and many more…
Looking back on each of those movies brings back happy memories. Memories of my childhood and letting my imagination run wild.
Obviously, one of the best ways to remember those films is the music. It’s pretty hard to sing Under The Sea without hearing someone else’s Sebastian impression. Personally, I still find myself humming Circle of Life, A Whole New World, Friend Like Me and Be Our Guest…
What! I can admit to it!
I know I’m an adult with a career in sports and I may get ridiculed for this but screw it, I still sing Disney tunes to myself.
When it comes down to picking the all time best out of so many classic songs, I found myself drawn to an absolute classic:
I write a lot about action movies and big summer blockbusters so for this edition of All Time Best, I thought I’d bring the emotional side of film to the forefront.
Mr. Holland’s Opus
A fantastic movie that depicts the entire career of a music teacher who is passionate about his own music.
As the movie progresses, life continues to derail his dreams of producing his own symphony yet little does he realize the enormous impact he has on the lives of his students and deaf son Cole.
This movie got to me the first time I saw it and continues to do so to this day.
Yes. I’m freely admitting that tears fall when I watch this movie. Proof that even the most die hard action fans can cry.
When selecting my All Time Best Emotional Movie Moment, I immediately thought about the scene embedded below.
As a single clip it doesn’t have the same power or emotional effect but when you see it during the movie itself it’s incredibly touching.
