Does My Blog Look Boring?

December 2nd, 2009 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Design | Technology | Web - (0 Comments)

This banner isn't ugly is it?

Be honest, this is probably not the best looking blog in the world…  I’m willing to guarantee it because I’ve seen some amazing sites.

The Athletic Nerd has been in existence for nearly 3 months now and I’m loving it.  Having a place to write about films, television and technology has been a goal of mine for a long time.   When I first started, my overall plan was simple:

Step 1: Create the blog (Check)

Step 2: Create interesting content (Check but it’s debatable)

Step 3: Find an audience (See Step 2)

Thanks to WordPress, step 1 was pretty simple.  Within minutes, I was up and running.  Steps 2 and 3 are still a work in progress but I have a pretty good idea of where I want to take this blog in coming months.  The other day, I was reading some articles about blogging and it opened my eyes to an opportunity I have yet to seize.  An opportunity to create a blog that doesn’t look boring.  It’s an inspiring idea isn’t it?

Speaking of which, two sites in particular inspired this post:

problogger.net A pretty amazing resource for bloggers
Smashing Magazine: The Death of the Blog Post

I have to admit, there is an issue with my three step plan.  It fails to address the overall design of the site.  I think it’s time to really start focusing on an overall look.  To me that means more graphics, better images and more dynamic layouts for my posts.  So you’ll be noticing some changes from now on.  I really like the idea of creating a unique look tailored to each individual blog post.  When I had this realization, I took a look at my blog and decided it was ugly.  I know I’m not the only beginner out there dealing with this issue…  I intend to fight.

Putting effort into the way posts are displayed is an extremely important part of maintaining a successful blog.  You have to be willing to put in the time in order to create amazing content that looks great.  Even as I type this, I have Photoshop open and I’m brainstorming some type of banner to put at the top of this post.  Little details count. (It’s up there now.  Simple.  I think it’s effective.)  So, how do you avoid ugly posts?  Here’s what I’ve learned so far:

Content comes first. Boring content is a synonym for ugly content.

Don’t be afraid of custom graphics. This was my downfall at first.  I like a lot of media in my posts but I was never willing to go the extra mile to really create a truly original look.

Pay attention to layout. I’ve written a bunch of posts that look identical to each other.  It would be fantastic if they all looked awesome but they probably don’t.  A lot of the blogging trends I’ve caught onto involve magazine style layouts.  Blogazine if I remember the term correctly.  People are incorporating a lot of different techniques and separating sections of their blog in different ways to really keep people’s attention on their content.  A magazine look may not necessarily be the style I’m going for but it’s an example of something different to try.

Avoid large blocks of text. I’m shocked at how many blogs I’ve seen that look like textbooks. I’ve made that mistake as well.  (Actually, in a way, I’m doing it right now.)

Have a vision. I work in a fast paced environment and I have to be able to trust my instincts on what looks good enough to put to air.  Even while writing and directing, you need to have a clear idea of what the end result will be.  This applies to blogging too.  The trick is to plan out elements to make your posts stand out and then execute.

Don’t force it. Putting too much into a post can have a negative effect as well.  Too much ‘noise’ is distracting.  Good design is invisible. Personally, I’m a fan of minimalist design.

I’m learning more and more as I go and I’ve seen some pretty amazing looking blogs along the way.  It’s great to have so many sources of inspiration on the web.

The journey to better looking posts has begun.

Stay tuned for more interesting and better looking content in 3…2… soon.

PS: This post was phase 2.  There are no more phases.

Screenwriting: Portable Writing

Today, I Googled iPhone tips…  I’m always looking for nerdy things to do.  I came across a function that lets you take screenshots of your iPhone.  So here is my home page.

Immediately, the gears started turning and a blog post was born.  A post about a new way for writers to work on their newest projects.  Portable Writing.

For the last few months I’ve been writing a lot about my phone and what it’s meant for my writing.  I also wrote about finding time to write.  It’s seriously getting harder and harder to find excuses NOT to.  Look at that gorgeous screenshot.  Lets take a closer look.

Smart phones have literally enhanced the writer’s ability to…

Well write. I’m constantly firing up the iPhone to write a blog, scene or outline a new sequence.  Needless to say, it’s been a very productive couple of months.

It started with WordPress.  An app that allows you to update, edit and publish posts from your phone.  These days, every writer has a blog of some type. A quick search of the app store shows dozens of blogging apps to help you get that new article online no matter which platform you use.

The Athletic Nerd has been in existence for just about 3 months and I’d say close to half of the posts began on my phone.  Whether it’s killing time on a bus or walking to the store, I always have an outlet to write.

The app that literally blew my mind was Screenplay. My full review of the app can be found HERE.  I searched screenwriting in the app store on the odd chance there would be a news app or something similar.  I never would have thought a full featured screenwriting app would pop up.  I’ve been using it to finish a short film I’ve been picking at over the last few weeks.  It’s a great way to write if you can’t find the time at home.

The Outliner App came next. This reasonably priced program allows you to create and update mulitiple lists for any occasion.  I have lists for movie ideas, blog topics, story lines, scene ideas, dialogue possibilities and even outlines for future scripts.  It’s a must have for any writer.

Having the iPhone has also re-invigorated my interest in social networking.  Facebook and Twitter are featured prominantly on my phone.  I’m always connected to my friends AND it’s easier for me to post updates on 17 West and my blog.

Finally, my super nerd app of the week, Analytics. An app that logs into Google Analytics and displays your website statistics.  I follow these numbers closely and it’s great to be able to check them wherever I go.

Portable writing used to mean pens and notebooks.  I’m still a massive fan of hitting the library with nothing but blank pages and hours to kill but when time doesn’t permit itself, I can always use my phone.

Portable writing.  Sweet.

The Athletic Nerd is Live!

September 14th, 2009 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in 17 West | Design | Technology | Web - (0 Comments)

The Athletic Nerd by Jason McKinnon

Welcome to After Then and Before Now v2.0.

The Athletic Nerd

Why 2.0?  This blog’s original home was www.17west.ca. I wanted the blog to have more functionality so a new site was born.

jaymckinnon.com is now officially live and the new home of my blog.

I’m pretty pumped to start blogging about 17 West’s upcoming films as well as my adventures in filmmaking.

I’m also going to be writing about my obsession with screenwriting, web development, graphic design and motion graphics. You’ll get a first hand look at life as a professional editor in television. Long nights, tight deadlines and tons of excitement.

As this is my first official post, I’m going to keep it brief.  With 3 film’s in pre-production and 2 feature screenplays in development, I’m extremely excited about the year ahead.  There is a lot going on and a massive amount of updates. Stay tuned.

Jay.
