Christopher Nolan M. Night Shyamalan

In part one of Director Wars: Nolan vs Shyamalan, I talked about wanting needing to be inspired by the movies I watch.

Both Christopher Nolan and M. Night Shyamalan have created original movies that have fueled my passion for screenwriting and filmmaking.

For years now, on the successes of The Sixth Sense and Signs, Night has been my favorite director.

However, the quality of his films have unfortunately diminished over the last few outings and left an opening for Christopher Nolan to become the new champ.

I left it all in the hands of their work.

  • Signs is my favorite movie of all time.
  • The Dark Knight sits at number 2.
  • The Sixth Sense was one of the coolest and original ghost stories ever.
  • Memento, The Prestige and Batman Begins are all solid and original films.

Both filmmakers craft interesting and entertaining movies that are filled with thrills and challenge our minds.  It’s these types of movies that inspired me to become a screenwriter in the first place.  I’m in debt to them both for constantly reminding me what hard work and dedication can achieve.

Who wins?

It was all up to the 2010 summer movie season where Shyamalan would release The Last Airbender and Nolan countered with Inception.

Director Wars: Nolan vs Shyamalan

Christopher Nolan has officially surpassed Shyamalan and become my all time favorite director.

Truthfully, it wasn’t even close.

While Signs remains my all time favorite movie, I can’t help but feel that M. Night Shyamalan has banked on his name instead of his stories to succeed.  He created three  straight classics (Or four if you count The Village.) and was basically given a blank check for his future projects.

He used his position of power to create Lady In The Water and The Happening. When those movies failed he turned to an existing property.  One of the reasons I love filmmakers like Night is because of the  original stories they create.  While I definitely didn’t enjoy his last few movies, at least he took a chance.

Having said that, he did miss and I believe he bought into his own hype.  His films had an arrogance to them.

For example:

Casting himself as a writer that would one day change the world in Lady seemed a bit out of place considering he is in fact a writer.

The Last Airbender just seemed lazy and the screenplay was the worst part.  Even after all the criticism and harsh words he has received, he still seems oblivious to the critics.  He’s more determined than ever to do things his way.

I have to admit, I respect him for that but in order to remain a massive fan, I have to enjoy his movies.  I haven’t.

I do hope he will return to form someday and make another movie that inspires me.  I won’t hold it against him like some people have over the years.  He’s putting his heart and soul into his films and I wish Hollywood studios put more faith in artists like him.  You never know when you’ll get another Sixth Sense.

On the other side of the coin is Christopher Nolan. A director who has an incredible resume.  He took original ideas and crafted outstanding screenplays (credit his brother Jonathan as well) then executed them perfectly on the screen.  His imagination seems limitless and the studios wrote him a blank check as well.

What does he do?

He creates films like The Prestige and then completely DOMINATES one of the most precious franchises of all: Batman.

Not only that, he followed up Batman Begins with arguably the finest comic book adaptation in history in The Dark Knight. A film that featured one of the best villains we’ve ever seen!

Then what?

He begins to work on a 160 million dollar passion project called Inception

The hype begins to build.

How will he follow up after the success of The Dark Knight?

Inception was a phenomenal film.  It really is a modern day classic and a masterful piece of filmmaking.  Sounds pretty deep but it is such an intelligent story that’s filled with entertaining action and visuals.  How can you not praise the high level of creativity.  Whether you loved Inception or not you have to admit it was a pretty clever story.

When you compare that to The Last Airbender, it stops being a competition.

Nolan wins this round and as a result…

I have a new favorite director!

Christopher Nolan Director Inception

The Aftermath

The race was actually closer than you might think. I have a deep respect for both of these directors.  They have each created films that have inspired the writer I wish to become someday.

We all owe a small measure of our success to those who inspired us to go down an unknown road.  A road that may not lead to success at all but thanks to films like Inception and Signs, I’m determined to find out where it goes.

Can The Film Industry Learn From The Miami Heat?

In a historic off season, the NBA has been changed forever.  7 years ago, when they first entered the league, no one could have predicted that we would all witness a team that boasted Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Lebron James.

Are you kidding me?

These three superstars put ego and money aside to join forces and win a championship.  The Miami Heat have since become the most talked about franchise in professional sports.

Even a few years ago people would never have guessed that we would see Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen together.  We all saw the success they had.

It got me thinking…

What if a few superstar filmmakers got together and created a movie?

We have definitely seen some amazing filmmaking teams over the years but I’m thinking bigger.

We’ve seen Spielberg and Lucas team ups in the past but what if Scorsese or Coppola joined in to create something new? Can you imagine how many people would follow that movie?  The hype would be enormous. What magical project would unite these titans?

Can the film industry learn from the Miami Heat?

Is their enough shots to go around? (I suppose that works for both basketball and film doesn’t it? Nice.)

I think it’s all about the greater good and knowing each others strengths.  You HAVE to be a team player to pull it off.

The Three Kings of Miami have the entire sports world talking about whether or not they can pull it off.  Some people doubt they will be able to win a title right away but nobody is doubting the enormous amount of talent they bring to the table.

James, Wade and Bosh may not have the supporting cast yet but they are united in a common goal.  To win NBA championships.  I think it’s fantastic to see 3 superstars willing to share the spotlight to achieve their collective goals.

Why not film? Is it possible?

Imagine that it was for a moment…

What team ups would you like to see?

  • What if Christopher Nolan, Zak Snyder and J.J Abrams decided to lock themselves in a room and work on a secret project together.
  • What if Peter Jackson, Quentin Tarantino and Ridley Scott were planning an epic war drama? Written by Tarantino and Jackson with Ridley Scott directing.  Bring in Weta Digital to do the visual effects.
  • How about M. Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense Night, not The Happening Night.) hooked up with George Romero and created a project that enticed David Fincher to come on board?
  • What if James Cameron created a brand new sci fi love story and worked closely with Cameron Crowe and Michael Mann?

The possibilities are endless!

I can’t decide whether it’s wishful thinking or sheer curiosity but I think the trend has already begun.

We’ve seen some pretty incredible casts come together already.  Insane amounts of talent in one place. Take The Expendables for example.  Did you ever think you would see those action legends in one movie?

We’ve even seen some directors teaming up with one producing but I’m thinking much, much bigger.

What I’m talking about here is a GIANT team up with a specific goal in mind.  To create the absolute best movie possible.  To win the championship.

It’s an interesting thought.

Obviously, like the NBA, you can’t win a title without a supporting cast and the film world is no different.

You can’t just bring 3 incredible directors on board and then skimp out on key technical and artistic positions. There are a ton of loose ends that need to be tied up before a team can achieve success.  You need the right group of people in the right creative atmosphere for it to work.

I can’t help but wonder what could be possible if the stars aligned someday.

Is there a dream team out there willing to put aside money and ego to achieve creative immortality?

Would it even lead to creative immortality?

It’s a reality in the sports world.  Look at the Celtics and Heat.  I really don’t think we’ve seen the last of this incredible new trend.  What crazy team up will happen next?  Maybe the Heat will succeed and another super team forms to defeat them.  Time will tell.

As for the filmmaking super awesome team?

We can hope can’t we?

Would the film be able to live up to the hype? What kind of film would it be?

Anything is possible.

All Time Best Movie Moments

I didn’t even have to think about this one.  The movie may still be fresh in my mind but there is no doubting the amazing Heath Ledger and his portrayal of:

The Joker

The Dark Knight Heath ledger The Joker Best Movie Villain

The Dark Knight’s Joker is one of the best villains of all time. The result of an extremely well written character and the performance of a lifetime.

How do you go about reinventing one of the greatest comic book villains ever?  Christopher Nolan’s vision of The Joker was dark, sinister and completely perfect for the world he developed for Batman.  When he cast Heath Ledger in the role, nobody knew what to expect.  Then the images started to leak and we got a teaser trailer featuring The Joker’s evil laugh.

XTRA | The Athletic Nerd’s Movie Power Rankings #1-15

I waited 3 hours in line on opening day to see the midnight screening.  I was at a 3pm showing later that day.

He’s completely fascinating to watch.

Heath Ledger is an amazing actor and it’s truly tragic that we will never see him bring another character to life.  What an incredible performance.

From a screenwriting stand point, they knocked it out of the park.  I read the screenplay a while back and it’s amazing.  If you’re an aspiring screenwriter and you want to learn how to write a script with nuance and an unforgettable amount of detail, look no further. No wonder DC gave Christopher Nolan the keys to the universe.  Having him on board any project makes it better.

When it comes to the best villains of all time, some may disagree that The Joker belongs in the number 1 spot.  However, I guarantee you he’ll be a part of every single one of those conversations.

Christopher Nolan M. Night Shyamala

M. Night Shyamalan has been my favorite director for years.  Signs is by far my favorite movie of all time and The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and to a lesser extent The Village are all solid and original movies.

That’s why he became my favorite director.

However, few would argue that he has been stumbling lately.

Christopher Nolan is a genius. The man behind The Dark Knight (My second favorite movie) deserves all the credit he has received over the years.  Memento, The Prestige to the Batman films are some of the most well made and entertaining films of all time.

With Inception, Batman 3 and even mentoring the new Superman movie on the horizon, he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

So the title of Favorite Director is officially up for grabs.

The Battle Begins This Summer

Nolan’s Inception is my most anticipated movie of 2010 for about 2 million reasons. (Click here to read a few of them)  The movie just looks cool.  There aren’t many stylized action films with this level of originality, mystery and hype.  The last one I can think that had me this excited was The Matrix.

I can’t wait to see Inception.

M. Night Shyamalan also has a new movie coming out this summer.  The Last Airbender looks decent but it can’t claim half the hype that Inception has.  However, it does look like an incredibly fun ride.  I honestly think this movie will be a return to form for the director.

Both filmmakers are basically tied at this point but as the summer approaches, I’ll be allowing the film fanatic within to determine which film inspires me the most.

When the dust settles, Mr. Shyamalan may remain my favorite director. He’ll always be the director who truly inspired me to pursue screenwriting as more than just a hobby.

On the other hand, Mr. Nolan has created some of the most memorable film moments in recent history.

Who will win?

Movies inspire me. I’m loyal to directors who fuel my passion for films so this is definitely a difficult call.

I’ll be a fan of them both for the rest of my life no matter who comes out on top.  Having said that, there must be a winner of this epic battle.  I’ll let there movies do the talking this summer!
