The Rundown Ep. 18 | Movie Headlines | Movie News | Movie Blog

Ian Holm is back for The Hobbit! It’s a small bit of news but at this point, I’ll take anything I can get.  As far as anticipation goes, it’s a tie between the Hobbit films, The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises for me.  I’ll take any news I can get!

Kevin Smith & Quentin Tarantino

I’ve mentioned many times on this blog that while I’m not a big fan of Kevin Smith’s movies, I’m definitely a fan of the man himself.  Between his hilarious ‘Evening With‘ DVDs, his blogs and his books, I’ve followed him closely.

XTRA: Kevin Smith & Independent Filmmaking

Kevin Smith Indie Film | Red State | Movie Blog

Last week, Smith wrote a lengthy post about Quentin Tarantino over at The Red Statements.  The article includes Quentin’s review of Red State, a visit to his home and tons of movie references that geeks like me adore.

Check it out here.

Aziz Ansari Is Awesome

One day a friend of mine posted a video of Aziz Ansari on Facebook.  I’m ashamed to say I hadn’t heard of him until that day.  Needless to say, I’ve been a fan ever since.

Aziz and Jesse Eisenberg join Danny MacBride in an awesome looking flick called 30 Minutes Or Less.  The trailer takes a strange turn when the actual plot is revealed but it’s still a great cast and a funny trailer.  Enjoy.

Life In A Day Trailer Inspires

I can’t wait to see ‘The YouTube Movie’.  The idea of presenting a documentary comprised of videos submitted on YouTube is both inspiring and intriguing.  Personally, I’m hoping the eventual Blu Ray is packed with bonus features, extra footage and making of documentaries.

PS: I would have loved to edit that movie.  So much amazing footage and touching stories to tell.

Mel Gibson Interview

Deadline managed to get Mel Gibson to open up about his career and so much more.  The interview is a great read.  I’m 100% against his actions over the last few years but I’m also a massive fan of his movies.  So it’s bitter sweet to see him finally creeping back into the spotlight.

Check out the full interview over at Deadline.

Terri Trailer

Here is a pretty great trailer for an upcoming drama starring John C. Reilly.

A Concept We’ve Seen 1 Billion Times?

The Change Up is yet another ‘body switching’ comedy.  How can people still get away with pitching movies like this?  The answer is: People who can deliver Jason Batemen, Ryan Reynolds and the director of The Wedding Crashers.

Mortal Kombat Legacy Episode 2

The second episode of this 12 (or is it 9 now?) episode series continues to make me smile but not enough to really love it.  I suppose they needed 2 episodes to establish Jax and Kano’s ‘enhancements’ but I’m greedy and I was expecting a story featuring different characters! (Except not the way Annihilation did it.)

Still, the style of the series is awesome (although cheesy at times) and at the end of the day it’s live action Mortal Kombat for FREE!  So I’ll stop complaining.

Bring on Episode 3!

The Trailer of the Rise of the Planet of the Apes

I actually liked this trailer a lot.  Definitely liked ‘Rise of the Apes’ a lot better but I can see why the changed it.  Brand recognition is key I suppose.

Cowboys & Aliens Continues To Impress

Audioslave is an inspired choice Mr. Favreau.  Nice touch.

The Hobbit Video Blog!

One of my favorite behind the scenes stories is that of The Lord of the Rings.  The special extended DVDs are packed with countless hours of phenomenal footage that tells the incredible story of how Peter Jackson and Co. pulled it all off.

I still watch those documentaries at least once a year.

XTRA: Why Special Features Inspire Independent Filmmakers

Now, with The Hobbit officially filming, Peter Jackson has returned to give us a taste of life on set.  Enjoy.

/FILM Has Two Great Transformers 3 Posts

The good folks over at /Film posted two really interesting articles this week on the production of Transformers: Dark of the Moon.  I’m all over this movie when it comes up. I’m not sure if you share my enthusiasm but these pages are good reads anyways.

/Film Gets A Sneak Peek At The Insane Action In Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

Interview: Michael Bay Talks Dark of the Moon.

Cool Short Film: Damn Your Eyes

This week’s short film comes from director David Guglielmo.  Damn Your Eyes is an entertaining and well made western with a really great story.  You can’t ask for much more than that in a short film.

Sam, a mysterious stranger, arrives in town to exact revenge on the men who wronged him when he was only a child. He encounters Louisa, a prostitute who dreams of a better life. Meanwhile, Dennis, the town’s lawman, is familiar with Sam’s past and makes it his personal duty to stop him before the violence escalates.

Check out the film below and stay tuned for another exclusive interview.

The Rundown Ep. 14

The Rundown Ep. 14 | Movie Headlines | Movie Blog

The New Captain America Trailer Sold Me.

I really wasn’t sure about the Captain America movie.  It’s probably the comic book character I know the least about and while the Superbowl trailer got me a little excited, it was the theatrical trailer that won me over.

I really only have 2 fears now and neither of them will go away until I’ve seen it.  First, I really hope they let this movie breath on it’s own without cramming in reference after reference to the upcoming Avengers movie.  Second, tiny CG Chris Evans…  Not buying it yet.

Too Much Sparrow?

I know a lot of people suffered from a little ‘fatigue’ when At World’s End was released.  Personally, I love the crap out of the Pirates trilogy.  90% of my love of that series is Captain Jack Sparrow.  Yet, will this new movie capture the same magic?

This trailer doesn’t help much.  It still has a similar tone and looks like a ton of fun but I really hope they don’t overdo it.  We’ll have to wait and see.  These movies are designed to be explosive, funny and entertaining.  I’m willing to give the filmmakers the benefit of the doubt at least one more time.

Hurry Up Cloverfield 2!

With Super 8 around the corner, I’m reminded about how much I love Team Abrams and everything they’ve done thus far.  Of all their mysterious projects, the one I think I’m looking forward to the most (besides Star Trek 2) is the follow up to Cloverfield.

XTRA: I Call These Movies, Awesome Movies

Total Film caught up with director Matt Reeve’s and he had this to say:

“Well, you are going to see it – we just don’t know when [laughs].  At the moment we are talking about the story quite a lot. Drew Goddard, who wrote the original, is going to pen the sequel and JJ Abrams is very much involved.  However, the three of us have been so busy that getting the right idea together has been taking a long time.”

Your Highness Looks Hilarious

I really hope these awesome trailers don’t ruin every joke in the movie.  Head over to /FILM and press play immediately.

Mr. Poppers Penguins

Is Jim Carrey back?  I don’t know anything about the book but watching The Mask himself dancing at the end is worth it.

The Athletic Nerd Movies Screenwriting Independent Film Blog

In it’s simplest form, The Athletic Nerd is the home of 17 West Productions.

17W is my production company that I co-run with producer/director Eric Gamache.

Originally, The Nerd lived at 17west.ca and basically existed so people would have a reason to return to our site while we were between films.

It’s not easy getting traffic to a website that no one is searching for.

People didn’t know us.

Back in those days, I wasn’t knowledgeable enough in web design to create a full featured blog. I created each page from scratch and the process became tedious.

The content suffered.

It also became clear to me that our company’s page was no place for my personal views and opinions on movies.

I decided to move the content to a brand new blog. A place to write about filmmaking, screenwriting and of course, the progress of 17W.

The Athletic Nerd was born.

Since then, I’ve worked hard to integrate and interlink both sites together. Daily updates. Traffic.

The results have been amazing thus far with our films receiving far more exposure. Once google found this blog, more and more people made their way to our home page.

I’m happy I made the decision to move the blog to it’s own site.

It gave me the freedom to talk about more than just 17 West.

It allowed me to have fun and write about what I’m personally passionate about.

It gave me a place to share my experiences as a filmmaker with others. To network. To expand my knowledge of both indie film and building a personal blog.

It’s been challenging to develop a unique style but it’s something I continue to work at everyday.

The overall goal is simple.

I love movies and I love filmmaking.

The Athletic Nerd gives me a wonderful place to discuss one while promoting the other.

I can write about the screenwriting craft and how mesmerizing it is to look at a blank page and imagine the possibilities.

Above all else, I love to write about what inspires me. It’s all about the movies we love.

It’s been one year.

I’ve never been more dedicated.

Top 6 iPhone Apps For Movie News

I’ve had my iPhone for nearly a year now and I’m constantly looking for new apps to feed my constant need for movie news.

Surprisingly, there aren’t too many around yet that focus solely on movie news.  You can easily find apps like New York Times that have entertainment sections but most of them feature more on celebrities than the movies themselves.

There are ways of getting around the lack of movie apps.

Obviously, Safari is a pretty solid option.  Many news sites and film blogs have easy to navigate mobile versions but I still tend to favor apps.  For that reason, it still doesn’t count to create an app out of a web page.

Although I did make one for this blog for faster access.

While I’m still holding my breath for a Joblo.com app, there are still a few I use every day.

Here are the top 6 iPhone apps for movie news lovers:

/Film

Easily one of the top movie blogs online.  The best app I’ve downloaded for general movie news by far.

Blastr (aka SCI FI Wire)

Looking for nerdy movie/tv and sci fi news?  This is the best of the best.  They don’t update with a ton of stories everyday but 9 out of 10 are interesting reads so it works out.

Variety

While I’ve had some issues using this app, it is still a great source of movie news when you need it.

IMDb

There are always dates or names that I HAVE to know immediately.  IMDb is the first place I go for all of that information.

Digg

This is a great app for casual reading and opinion pieces.  I head hear looking for reactions and features on the latest headlines in the film industry.  (Technology too.)

Flixter

I use this app primarily to get show times but it also has a fantastic trailer section and Rotten Tomatoes integration.  Not bad Flixter…  Not bad…

The Wishlist

I’ve tried to find the mysterious Moviefone app in the store to test but have been unable to do so.  I want answers.

Beyond that, here are a few more sites that I hope will release an iPhone app someday.

More to come as more apps are released.

PS: Let me know if I’m missing any.  I’d like this to be a Top 30 list by the end but we have a long way to go!  That is all.
