Review: Scripts Pro for iPhone

Finally a high quality screenwriting app for my iPhone has arrived.

Scripts Pro

This is the third screenwriting app I’ve tried.  The first was Screenplay by Black Mana which I thought was decent considering it was the first.  Next I tried ScriptWrite and couldn’t really get a handle on it.

When I compared the two it was clear that both had some good ideas but mobile screenwriters out there were missing a golden app that put it all together.

Until Scripts Pro came along and got it right!

It is by far the best screenwriting solution on the iPhone.  It supports multiple formats for both importing and exporting as well as a clean and easy to use interface.  But I’ve seen these features before.  It was the TAB button that sold me on Scripts Pro

Screenwriters finally have a TAB option in an iPhone APP!

Anyone who has every written a screenplay knows the significance of the TAB function.  It allows you to easily switch between different elements of the screenplay.  Literally every major program out there utilizes this system.  (Movie Magic, Final Draft, Celtx etc…)

Finally seeing it in an screenwriting app is fantastic news because it’s hard enough to type quickly on an iPhone.  It really isn’t meant to allow you to write full screenplays but it does allow you to get down your ideas wherever you are.

It helps to have an app that makes it as easy as possible to do so.

Note: Nothing says you CAN’T write a full script with an iPhone.  I just prefer a full size keyboard when inspiration really hits.

Smart Type!

Ah Smart Type…  So useful… So easy.  Thank you for making it a part of my iPhone and making it easy to use.  Like I said, typing isn’t simple on small touch screen devices so every short cut helps.  The addition of smart type makes a world of difference to keep you writing uninterupted.

Scripts Pro also makes it easier to manage your scripts.  You can reorder scenes and edit them with ease.  Even capitalizing words is easier with Scripts Pro.

Basically, what I’m trying to say is the Scripts Pro app is awesome.

Mobile screenwriting is a great way to stay connected to your screenplays and this app is the best way to do it.  Whether you are writing a quick scene or working on your next potential blockbuster, this app has everything you need.

We’ve all been waiting to see the mysterious Final Draft app but honestly, I’m good for the time being.

The developers have promised frequent updates and I’m pretty excited to see them improve an already stellar app.

It’s a 30 minute commute to work.  Scripts Pro is an instant hall of famer.

It’s well worth the 5.99 price tag.

PS: By hall of famer I mean it has a place on my home screen.

What do Screenwriting, eBooks, Final Cut, Photoshop & Super Mario Galaxy 2 have in common?

That’s how I spent my afternoons over the last few weeks.

It seems like a lot and it got me thinking:

Is it better to split my time and work on multiple projects or focus only on one?

Where do you stand?

Each morning, I wake up more and more determined to reach the ambitious goals I’ve set for myself.  Every day before work I have about 4 hours or so to work on various projects and I like to think I’ve been productive.

Personally, I like having different types of projects on the go. I like the variety.  I still focus and prioritize but it’s nice to take a break and work on something else too.

For example:

I’m still hammering away at my latest feature screenplay. It’s been getting in the way of some exciting new ideas for far too long and it’s time to finish the story.

I don’t mean to suggest that I just want to get it over with. I simply operate under the theory that you shouldn’t start a new project before you finish the old one.

Before you accuse me of being a hypocrite rest assured I only have one feature screenplay in the scripting stage.  I can’t bring myself to start a new one without wrapping this one up.

I can’t wait to print it out.

The idea has been in my head for nearly 5 years now and I’m extremely happy it’s almost done.

Do you love screenwriting?

So what are these other projects?

I’ve been working on a top secret eBook that consists of 32 chapters and a February-March target to release.

Can I pull off one chapter a week? Do the math.  Probably not but I’m definitely going to try.

There is still a lot of work to be done to meet that deadline. This week, I finally moved passed the intro and broke some ground on the first few chapters.  A lot of it will come together quickly as I’ve already finished the design and overall style of each page.  It’s just a matter of filling in the details.

Next up on the daily to-do list involves 17 West’s latest short film, Final Cut Pro and me!

The Climb Short Film Toronto

It’s been over two months since we wrapped shooting on The Climb and editing is well under way. It’s an exciting project because for the first time I’ll be handling most of the post production process myself.

Hopefully it turns out.

Forgive the pun but editing is a nice change of pace in my daily routine.  Even though my television career revolves around editing, it’s still nice to slow things down and cut a film instead of faster paced sports highlights.

Next…

I love Photoshop!

It’s a great way to let your brain relax while still being creative.  While I love messing around with the program, I also had a few assignments to finish.  First on my list is a poster for The Climb as well as a top secret web series I’ve been developing for a while now.

I like to design posters for screenplays I’m working on.  It’s a good way to really hammer out a tone for the film.

It also gives me a chance to think about the story before writing begins.  I firmly believe that Photoshop as a hobby has helped my writing immensely.

Photoshop Cures Writer's Block

Lets go back to that web series…

Final Draft makes a second appearance in my daily routine as somehow, I managed to write the first two chapters of a new horror story I’m calling AFTER.

I’m having a blast with the new characters and setting up cliffhangers between each chapter.

I’ve always wanted to write a series of short scripts to see how I can pace the different episodes and develop characters over time.  It’s a pretty exciting experiment.

I’ll have more on that series soon.

What else?

I also make time to eat, watch movies and play the odd video game.

Currently, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is dominating my spare time.  I can’t get enough of that game.  It’s incredible.

I think it’s vital to give your brain a rest every once in a while.  It’s a tough lesson I learned long ago after I burnt myself out one too many times.

Sports.  Video games.  Outdoors.  Trips.

General life type stuff should never come second.

Screenwriting, Super Mario Galaxy 2

The Important Question

The beauty of this routine is that my deadlines are self imposed so I really can take my time with each.  I love working on these projects. (I haven’t even mentioned working on this blog!)

It’s important to keep an eye on the finish line and find a good balance so you are constantly making progress.

But I still wonder if it would be better to drop everything and focus on one project.

Do you focus on one project or pick away at a few?

Personally, I think it depends on the person.

I like to switch things up to keep my mind working.  So far, the system has worked pretty well.

We will find out soon enough if this momentum I’ve generated pays off!

Final Draft is coming to the iPad! | Final Draft iPad, iPhone

I was gone for a week and missed this amazing development but I wish I could show you the expression on my face when I found out…

Final Draft is currently working on a new app for Apple’s new iPad.

This is truly fantastic news as screenwriters will now have a third option when it comes to writing scripts with the new device.

It’s nice to see that Final Draft is entering the arena.  I kind of feel bad for apps like Screenplay and ScriptWrite.  Their iPhone apps definitely blazed a trail for screenwriting on the go and I just hope that they continue to improve their products even with an industry GIANT like Final Draft bearing down on them.

I’ve been a Final Draft user for 10 years now and it’s easily the best program I’ve ever used. (I’ve tried them all.)  Just thinking about the innovations they will bring to the iPad makes me want one even more. (If that’s even possible.)

However, the keyboard on the iPad has me concerned.  I’m worried that it isn’t practical for long periods of writing.  The material I write with my iPhone is usually very rough and not intended to be final by any means but that isn’t what the iPad is supposed to be is it?

Truthfully, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about getting a laptop instead.

Either way, I’m excited to see what Final Draft brings to the app store.  It’s not clear when we will hear more but my decision on whether to go iPad or Laptop rests on the shoulders of Final Draft.

In the mean time, check out my mobile screenwriting round up for everything from app reviews to thoughts on the iPad and what it means for screenwriting.

Screenwriting apps on the iPhone. ScriptWrite vs Screenplay

My iPhone basically tripled my productivity on a daily basis.  I can write blogs, check site stats, dominate social media sites but most importantly, I can write screenplays. (Click here for more on Portable Writing)

The first screenwriting program I found on the APP Store was Screenplay by Black Mana StudiosIt’s a pretty great app. It’s easy to use and supports a lot of the features I expect in a screenwriting program.

My only complaint is how every scene is treated almost as a separate script.  The app lacks an option to review your entire script at once.  You have to keep switching screens to load up the next scene.  There’s just something strange about writing one scene at a time.  There are some advantages to the system as you don’t have to scroll FOREVER to reach a specific scene.  It’s a terrific way to navigate your script.  All I want is the option to read it all at once.   (Read my full thoughts on the app here)

Along came ScriptWrite and they understood that concept.  Your entire script on one screen.  It is also a disadvantage as scrolling through a giant script is annoying.  It would be great if they had a scene selection system like Black Mana’s app.

Anyone who has ever typed out a screenplay uses a tab system to switch between elements.  Switching is as simple as pressing ENTER or TAB.  This program allows you to  select an element from a list of icons.

It’s certainly not a bad system and it’s very similar to Black Mana’s app.  I just prefer interface in Screenplay.  ScriptWrite does get big points for being cheaper and I think it will definitely improve.  I’ll be watching for updates.

It’s great to have some competition for screenwriting supremacy on the iPhone.  Black Mana’s app is superior in my opinion except for one tiny complaint about how individual scenes are treated.  This is something they can fix.  ScriptWrite’s system may work for some writers out there but not for me.  Some people will probably like it better.  It’s a close call but for now, I’ll be sticking with Screenplay.  Especially since it was recently announced that they have partnered with Final Draft!

If you have an iPhone and are obsessed or even moderately interested in screenwriting, I highly recommend it.

January is a month of new beginnings.  It’s a time of resolutions and ambitious goals for the year ahead.  For me, it means all of those things and more.

It’s become a yearly tradition of mine.  This mission is extremely important to my yearly routine.  It’s a vital component of my creative routine. It’s so important that I cannot possibly imagine writing a single word in the new year without first accomplishing this goal.

I change my furniture around.

When I start something new like a script or a film (or both in the case of 2010) I find it necessary to change my surroundings.  It feels like I’m starting a new job with a new office and new possibilities.  For any writer out there who finds themselves blocked at any time of year, I recommend this practice for hundreds of reasons.  Here’s a few:

  • Throwing on the iPod and organizing your surroundings is a good chance to think about your new project.
  • You’re already being creative by deciding how your new configuration of furniture will look.
  • Everyone has a closet that stresses them out.  We all have junk drawers that we will get to someday.  It’s almost liberating to finally get to those problem areas.
  • How many times a year can you honestly say that you are 100% caught up with your laundry?  Make sure to do the sheets on your bed too.  That’s key.
  • Is anybody else in a better mood when the fridge is packed with food?  Grocery shopping is a crucial part of Operation Life Restart.  While you’re out, buy yourself a cake.  Why not?  I do it all the time.  Who doesn’t love cake?
  • With everything in order around you, it’s a million times easier to concentrate without the distractions of everyday life.
  • Finally finishing your work brings an enormous sense of accomplishment and makes you feel ready to take on any project.
  • It may sound like a busy way to spend a day off but I guarantee you will not regret it.

Most importantly….

  • You’ll feel like writing.

I completed Operation Life Restart on Sunday.  I’m ready for 2010.
