The Dark Knight Rises Advetising Campaign Begins

CHRISTOPHER NOLAN’S HYPE TRAIN HAS LEFT THE STATION!

The Dark Knight’s viral campaign was remarkable to say the least.  Each and every poster, trailer, TV spot, website and Easter egg built up an ‘event’ rather than just another summer release.

why so serious poster

With Inception, Nolan and his team were tasked with promoting an entirely new and complex world.  The resulting marketing campaign was amazing and once again, the movie delivered on the incredible hype surrounding it.

XTRA | Movie Hype: The Legend of Inception

I’ve always been fascinated by movie marketing.   Successes and failures.  It’s incredible to think about how many times a trailer promotes a movie that doesn’t really exist.  Misleading trailers and horrific posters comprised of floating heads and bad Photoshop are everywhere.  But there are also trailers you have to watch 42 times the day they show up online.  There are posters you save as your desktop wallpaper.  There are inspiring promotional materials everywhere.

Throughout the last 5-10 years, Christopher Nolan and his team have done a remarkable job selling the movies he directs.  I remember when people doubted whether or not a Batman ‘reboot’ could truly erase the horror that is Batman & Robin…   It did.

The brilliant marketing behind these epic films evolved as the world did embracing social media and the power of viral marketing.  I still remember following all the scavenger hunts and clues ‘The Joker’ left in strategic locations.  Promotional materials for The Dark Knight were everywhere.  They led to unique and secret websites.  They revealed hints about the plot.  They generated hype.

Of course, we all saw the results of that marketing campaign.  533 Million domestic and an Oscar for Heath Ledger’s legendary performance as The Joker.

Who knows what’s in store for the final chapter of this incredible film series.  The Dark Knight Rises is still months away but it’s clear the marketing campaign will once again raise the bar. We’ve already been treated to an amazing teaser trailer giving us our first brief glimpse of Bane.  It was a trailer largely comprised of reused footage from the first 2 films…  And it was amazing.

XTRA | Battle of the Teaser Trailers: The Dark Knight Rises vs Spider-Man vs The Avengers

I wasn’t surprised.  The teaser for The Dark Knight didn’t contain any footage at all and it still gives me chills.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES PROLOGUE

Nolan and co. just unleashed a 6 minute prologue in front of IMAX prints of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.  I had a ticket for a 2pm screening and had to take a bus, a subway and a cab to get there on time.  I’m thankful I did.  To say that the sequence is big is an understatement.  It’s like Nolan sat in a room and thought about how cool it was to flip over a transport in The Dark Knight.  Then he challenged himself to go bigger.

“I know… Let’s flip and rip apart a PLANE…  In mid air!”

Everyone’s reactions are generally the same online.  The prologue is incredible but some of Bane’s lines are difficult to understand.  While it’s true, it does give Nolan the opportunity to go back and clean up some of the lines through ADR.  What I don’t understand is how some people objected to Bane’s accent.  I think his voice sounds awesome overall when you can understand what he is saying.  It’s an amazing introduction to a relentless and volatile Bane.  I can’t wait to see him break Batman.

TRAILER #2

Just days after unleashing a fantastic poster and the epic prologue sequence, fans were also treated to a brand new and equally awesome trailer!

“When Gotham is ashes…  You have my permission to die.”

It’s another phenomenal trailer that gives us a glimpse at all the major characters without spoiling much of the story.  Check out this link for a detailed breakdown of the prologue and trailer.  There are a few shots of a cane suggesting Batman/Bruce Wayne is seriously injured in some way.  Will Bane break the Bat?  It makes me sad that July 20th, 2012 is so far away…

The Dark Knight Rises Advertising Campaign Begins

All of these announcements and reveals have been supported by secret ‘leaked’ CIA documents, websites, tweets, features in magazines and more.  Who knows what more we can expect from the film’s marketing department in the next 9 months.

I certainly helps the impossibly long wait before we get to see the film.

The Athletic Nerd Movie Power Rankings

Go to any major sports website and you will find Power Rankings.  A popular ranking system that lists every team in a league from best to worst.

Since I work for a sports network, it makes perfect sense to take that system and rank my favorite movies of all time.

Except I’m doing things a little differently.  These won’t be updated weekly. (That would be ridiculous) However, you will find links to stories I’ve written on the films in addition to trailers and bonus posts.

The Athletic Nerd Movie Power Rankings

Signs

M. Night Shyamalan’s film inspired me to become a better screenwriter.  There are definitely a ton of people out there who disagree with my number 1 pick but I stand by it.  I feel like writing every single time I see it.

The Dark Knight

Christopher Nolan created the greatest superhero movie of all time.

The Matrix

All three films are included in this pick.  Many people loved the first film but hated the trilogy as a whole but I disagree.  I didn’t love Revolutions but Reloaded was incredible.  Plus, you really can’t deny how amazing the first film was.  Outstanding.

A Few Good Men

My favorite screenplay.  I could watch those intense courtroom exchanges every single day.

Good Will Hunting

When it comes to compelling characters, Will Hunting ranks very high for me.

The Shawshank Redemption

I don’t think I’ve ever met a human being who didn’t like this movie.  Just saying.

Dumb & Dumber

My #1 favorite comedy.  The most quotable movie of all time amongst my circle of friends.

Toy Story

The first full length computer animated film is still the best.  Then they went and followed it up with 2 stellar sequels.

The Lord of the Rings

An unbelievable filmmaking achievement.  I watch every second of the trilogy AND the billion hours of special features at least once a year.

The Sandlot

A classic baseball movie.  For a movie nerd obsessed with sports, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Goodfellas

Of course Martin Scorsese has a place on this list.

A Beautiful Mind

I love fascinating characters and John Nash’s story is brilliantly brought to life by Russell Crowe and director Ron Howard.

Inception

Christopher Nolan.  His dream invading caper changed the way I’ll look at original screenplays forever.  The best movie of 2010.

Gladiator

It’s always a proud moment when your favorite movie wins the Oscar.  Russell Crowe appears twice in the top 15!  Not bad.

Garden State

I almost ignored this movie due to lack of interest.  That would have been a huge mistake on my part.

Gotham Falls. The Dark Knight Rises. Teaser Poster Released

Normally, I don’t post news items.  I save my reactions to huge news and trailers for my weekly Rundown posts.

Having said that, this is too big to ignore.  Finally, we get our first poster for The Dark Knight Rises!  Not so long ago, I wrote about The Legend of Inception and it’s remarkable marketing campaign.  Christopher Nolan and his team have proven yet again that they are the best.

This poster is awesome!  It’s so hard to deliver on such an enormous amount of hype but time and time again, they did it.  (More reaction Joblo, /Film, Collider)

I have to say I was curious to see what ‘color’ they go with for the new film.  Batman Begins had a very distinctive tan look whereas The Dark Knight went with blue.  I had The Dark Knight Rises narrowed down to either red or white.  This teaser poster seems to confirm the latter but you never know.  I figured I would include a couple previous posters as well.  Outstanding.

Gotham Falls. The Dark Knight Rises.

Gotham Falls. The Dark Knight Rises.

I couldn’t be more excited to see the teaser trailer this week if the rumors are true.  Will we be getting a voice over teaser like The Dark Knight?  Or will we get to see some footage?  I think it will be a mix of both.  I’m thinking we will get a few shots including one of Bane and maybe the back of Catwoman but the majority will be a V.O about Batman’s life on the run.

[UPDATE] The teaser trailer is finally online!

Regardless, I’m sure whatever they came up with will drive the entire internet crazy for months.

10 Flicks: Great Action. Great Stories | Top 10 Action Movies With Great Stories | Movie Blog

Nothing beats a good action movie when the mood strikes and we all have our favorites.  A quick Google search revealed tons of ‘best action movies ever’ lists.  Obviously, there are classics that appear on many lists but it always depends on the fan.

It’s not enough for a film to be crammed with wall to wall explosions and fights for me.  The action has to drive a good story with characters we care about.  What good is a shootout if you don’t care who wins?

So while there are countless lists like this out there, action fans will agree that there is always time for a collection of fantastic action trailers!

10 Flicks: Movies With Unanswered Questions | Movie Blog | Top 10

There are a ton of movies with giant plot holes that leave the audience frustrated with unanswered questions.  Who was that guy?  Why did they kill that person?  How could that possibly happen!?

This is NOT that list.

True unanswered questions are purposely built into movies that will keep people speculating forever.  Movie moments that cause endless debates among fans.

This top 10 list features some of the most talented filmmakers of all time with Quentin Tarantino, J.J Abrams and Christopher Nolan making appearances among others.

Are these the best unanswered movie mysteries of all time?

Weigh in by commenting below. (Note: Spoilers ahead.)

THE MAN WITH NO NAME TRILOGY
WHAT’S CLINT’S NAME?

10 Flicks: Unanswered Movie Questions | Movie Blog | Top 10

Sergio Leone’s The Man with No Name Trilogy features a legendary character played by Clint Eastwood.  In each of the three films he goes by a different nick name but his true name is never revealed.

THEORIES

The nominees are:

1) Joe – A Fistful of Dollars
2) Manco – For a Few Dollars More
3) Blondie – The Good, The Bad & The Ugly

CHILDREN OF MEN
WHAT CAUSED THE INFERTILITY?

10 Flicks: Unanswered Movie Questions | Movie Blog | Top 10 | Children Of Men

Children of Men is based on the idea that humans have become infertile and can no longer reproduce.  The thought provoking film then takes you on an amazing journey of hope that we will find a way to avoid extinction… But what caused the infertility?

THEORIES

While the movie never gives any specific reason, one can turn to some of the common causes of infertility.  This article breaks down a few of them. This doesn’t answer the extremely grim future the film depicts but at least it reassures us we are no where close to that future.

INCEPTION
DOES THE TOP FALL?

10 Flicks: Unanswered Movie Questions | Movie Blog | Top 10 | Inception

Does the top fall or not?  Everyone has a different opinion and that’s the beauty of Inception’s brilliant ending.  Is he still dreaming or does he finally reunite with his children?  When I saw this film in theaters the entire audience gasped when the credits rolled.  That’s an ending!

THEORIES

Here is a fantastic article from Screenrant that explains why it doesn’t matter if the top falls or not.  What matters is Cobb’s overall journey.  That article links to another story where Christopher Nolan himself confirms that theory on how Inception’s ending should be interpreted.

Personally, I think it hugely important that Cobb isn’t looking at the top but I also think it wobbles and will EVENTUALLY fall.  Where do you stand?

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS
ALDO’S SCAR

10 Flicks: Unanswered Movie Questions | Movie Blog | Top 10 | Inglourious Basterds

Lieutenant Aldo Raine’s scar hints at an extremely violent encounter from his past.  Who slit his throat and presumably left him for dead?  Is it a rope burn?  Did someone try to hang him?  Was he dragged behind a horse?  Did he survive a lynching?

THEORIES

Some articles have suggested he was punished for bootlegging.  Another report states that Tarantino suggested it was the KKK.  It has never been confirmed but all signs point to an encounter somewhere near his home in Southern United States.

FUN FACT: This isn’t the first time Tarantino has hinted at injuries in his movies.  What’s with the band aid on the back of Marcellus Wallace’s neck in Pulp Fiction?  More on that later…

THE ROAD
WHAT CAUSED THE END OF THE WORLD?

10 Flicks: Unanswered Movie Questions | Movie Blog | Top 10

There are so many ‘end of the world’ scenarios that have been explored in movies.  Nuclear war, mother nature, meteors, disease, infertility and more…  So what caused the world to end in The Road?

THEORIES

You can pretty much pick any of the above but there have been more theories about what cataclysmic event obliterated our species.  Solar storms?  Earthquakes? Some people think the author of the novel Cormac McCarthy never intended to define the event even in his own mind.

CAST AWAY
THE PACKAGE

10 Flicks: Unanswered Movie Questions | Movie Blog | Top 10 | Cast Away

I don’t think I would have waited as long as Chuck did to open those packages.  If I’m stranded on an island, I’m opening those things immediately to look for useful items.  Still, you have to admire him for leaving one unopened. It’s a package that he feels saved his life.  But…  What’s in there!?  Was it useful?  Could it have helped him?

THEORIES

If you hunt for an Easter egg on the DVD you will find out that the box contained a solar powered, water proof, satellite phone.  This is according to the director Robert Zemeckis.  I suppose it would have been useful…

Note: The audio clip is found in the Videos and Stills section (Disc 2) by pressing left on the Raft Escape.

CLOVERFIELD
WHERE DID THE MONSTER COME FROM?

10 Flicks: Movies With Unanswered Questions | Movie Blog | Top 10 | Cloverfield

For a long time leading up to Cloverfield’s theatrical release, fans were obsessed with discovering what the creature looked like.  Fake images and photoshopped monsters appeared everywhere online and speculation grew at a rapid pace.  By the time the film was released, people knew what ‘Cloverfield’ looked like but a much larger question loomed when the movie was over.  Where did it come from?

THEORIES

Fans of the film will no doubt point to the scene on Coney Island at the end of the film when a strange object is seen falling from space into the ocean.  This would suggest that the creature came from space.  Not so fast…  Master of Mystery and Cloverfield producer J.J Abrams described the monster as:

“A baby. He’s brand-new. He’s confused, disoriented and irritable. And he’s been down there in the water for thousands and thousands of years.”

If it’s been down there so long, then why did it take so long before it surfaced?  What about the strange falling object?  According to this site, it’s a satellite and that the recovery of the satellite awakens the monster.  The page also has a clip from the credits where a voice proclaims that the monster is still alive.  Sequel?  Please?

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3
THE RABBIT’S FOOT

10 Flicks: Movies With Unanswered Questions | Movie Blog | Top 10 | Mission Impossible 3

J.J Abrams is at it again in Mission Impossible 3.  Much of the film revolves around the retrieval of an object known only as The Rabbit’s Foot.  It’s basically a thermos with some fancy logos on it but what does it do?

THEORIES

Simon Pegg’s character in the film refers to The Rabbit’s Foot as ‘The Anti God’.  A technology capable of vast amounts of destruction.  Is it a disease or a computer virus?  Maybe a bomb?

Apparently J.J Abrams is good at creating mysterious… Things…

THE DARK KNIGHT
THE JOKER’S SCARS

10 Flicks: Unanswered Movie Questions | Movie Blog | Top 10 | The Dark Knight

One of the most fascinating aspects of Christopher Nolan’s vision of The Joker is the origin of his scars.  No doubt the result of a violent act either committed by himself or inflicted by another.  Nothing is certain except it was an amazing performance and one of the coolest villains of all time.

THEORIES

The Joker himself offers 2 possibilities in the film.  Either he got the scars from his abusive father or he did it to himself for his former bride.  Check out both of his explanations here.  I looked around on some message boards and found a couple theories involving ziplines and a horrific accident involving beans and toast…  It’s anyone’s guess but the entire point to The Joker is to keep his past dark and mysterious.

How many different stories do you think he told people over the years?  He probably had a dozens of gruesome tales.

PULP FICTION
THE BRIEFCASE

10 Flicks: Movies With Unanswered Questions | Movie Blog | Top 10 | Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction is packed with so many cool moments that you almost forget the mysterious orange glow in Marcellus Wallace’s briefcase.  What is in the briefcase?

THEORIES

There are hundreds of theories out there.  Is it simply a light bulb? A few suggest the case contains connections to other Tarantino films like the diamonds from Reservoir Dogs.  Some believe it’s a nuclear bomb. (Which is ridiculous.)

One interesting thought is that Marcellus Wallace sold his soul and is trying to buy it back.  Hence the band aid on the back of his neck.  It’s the most imaginative theory I came across.  Apparently when the Devil takes your soul he takes it from the back of your neck.  There’s your fun fact of the day I suppose.
