Very rarely does an original film come along like Inception. The last one I can remember was The Matrix.  These types of movies are ‘game-changers’.  Films that change the way we look at movies and raise our expectations for future releases.  Stories that challenge your mind while still providing blockbuster entertainment are the reason we love movies.  It’s impossible not to be excited about Inception.

Christopher Nolan is once again pushing the boundaries of technology and storytelling to a height we’ve never seen.  Many people once asked if he would ever top The Dark Knight.  Inception could very well be that masterpiece.

Nolan’s films are legendary for generating enormous amounts of hype and then delivering on that promise. It’s rare these days that an extremely creative film is partnered with an equally impressive advertising and promotional campaign.

It’s inspiring to see how these movies are packaged and presented to the public.  Trailers, advertisements, websites, TV spots and more give us glimpses into a mysterious story that we simply HAVE to see.

Everyone wants to know what Inception is?

Why are we so interested in Inception?

Secrecy

At first, only die hard film fans knew about Nolan’s next top secret project.  In the early stages all we knew was the title and that it was a thriller involving the mind.  Huh?

Whenever a brilliant director talks about tackling a passion project you have to take notice.  Sheer curiosity alone puts this movie on most people’s radars.  That’s before you mention the man directed The Dark Knight, Memento, The Prestige and Batman Begins. (All incredible movies.)

The hype machine slowly grew as little, yet perfectly timed, details came into focus.  With each new detail came new questions.

Just what is Nolan and that impressive cast and crew up to?

Trailers

Creating a good trailer is an art form. Most trailers these days give way too much away.  Credit has to be given to the filmmakers for having enough confidence in their film to avoid this pitfall.  Show just enough to get people talking.

The first teaser trailer did just that.

After watching that trailer I still didn’t know what the movie was about yet I desperately wanted more.  To quote the best villain to ever grace the silver screen:

“It’s all part of the plan”

Next came two incredible trailers that showed off some of the action and more of the mysterious plot.

This is how you promote a movie.  I love how they handled these trailers.  Even the TV spots are amazing.  It’s fascinating to watch them and try to figure out what Inception will be in the end.

That’s the point!

This is why movies inspire me.  There’s nothing like being excited to see a movie.  Much like The Dark Knight, this promotional campaign etches itself into popular culture.  Everyone is talking about that weird movie with Leonardo DiCaprio and the girl from Juno.

Artwork, Posters and Ads

Are you kidding me with these advertisements? First off, I agree it takes a ton of cash to pull off images like this but all the cash in the world doesn’t inspire creativity.  It simply provides the freedom to dream big and pull it off.

I’m still in awe of the images these artists created to promote the film.  I can’t get enough.

The amount of marketing dollars that went into this film is insane.  I like to think that these types of ads coupled with early screenings for critics means the studio has enormous confidence in the film.

It’s been a blast to follow.

Hype

Pretty much anyone who loves going to the movies is at the very least intrigued by Inception.  How can you ignore it?

I wish each and every weekend saw the release of a movie of this caliber.  That is a world I would like to live in.

Inception has received tremendous praise from critics and looks to be another monster hit.  I’m not surprised.  Generating this amount of hype and delivering an amazing film is what makes filmmakers legendary. This amount of buzz is normally reserved for big budget franchises and sequels.

What makes this summer unique is it’s crown jewel is an original story from one of the most talented directors of this generation.

Christopher Nolan is a genius.

I’m almost sad that once I see it, I won’t know what to look forward to next.  Actually, I’ll probably see it more than once.

Christopher Nolan M. Night Shyamalan

In part one of Director Wars: Nolan vs Shyamalan, I talked about wanting needing to be inspired by the movies I watch.

Both Christopher Nolan and M. Night Shyamalan have created original movies that have fueled my passion for screenwriting and filmmaking.

For years now, on the successes of The Sixth Sense and Signs, Night has been my favorite director.

However, the quality of his films have unfortunately diminished over the last few outings and left an opening for Christopher Nolan to become the new champ.

I left it all in the hands of their work.

  • Signs is my favorite movie of all time.
  • The Dark Knight sits at number 2.
  • The Sixth Sense was one of the coolest and original ghost stories ever.
  • Memento, The Prestige and Batman Begins are all solid and original films.

Both filmmakers craft interesting and entertaining movies that are filled with thrills and challenge our minds.  It’s these types of movies that inspired me to become a screenwriter in the first place.  I’m in debt to them both for constantly reminding me what hard work and dedication can achieve.

Who wins?

It was all up to the 2010 summer movie season where Shyamalan would release The Last Airbender and Nolan countered with Inception.

Director Wars: Nolan vs Shyamalan

Christopher Nolan has officially surpassed Shyamalan and become my all time favorite director.

Truthfully, it wasn’t even close.

While Signs remains my all time favorite movie, I can’t help but feel that M. Night Shyamalan has banked on his name instead of his stories to succeed.  He created three  straight classics (Or four if you count The Village.) and was basically given a blank check for his future projects.

He used his position of power to create Lady In The Water and The Happening. When those movies failed he turned to an existing property.  One of the reasons I love filmmakers like Night is because of the  original stories they create.  While I definitely didn’t enjoy his last few movies, at least he took a chance.

Having said that, he did miss and I believe he bought into his own hype.  His films had an arrogance to them.

For example:

Casting himself as a writer that would one day change the world in Lady seemed a bit out of place considering he is in fact a writer.

The Last Airbender just seemed lazy and the screenplay was the worst part.  Even after all the criticism and harsh words he has received, he still seems oblivious to the critics.  He’s more determined than ever to do things his way.

I have to admit, I respect him for that but in order to remain a massive fan, I have to enjoy his movies.  I haven’t.

I do hope he will return to form someday and make another movie that inspires me.  I won’t hold it against him like some people have over the years.  He’s putting his heart and soul into his films and I wish Hollywood studios put more faith in artists like him.  You never know when you’ll get another Sixth Sense.

On the other side of the coin is Christopher Nolan. A director who has an incredible resume.  He took original ideas and crafted outstanding screenplays (credit his brother Jonathan as well) then executed them perfectly on the screen.  His imagination seems limitless and the studios wrote him a blank check as well.

What does he do?

He creates films like The Prestige and then completely DOMINATES one of the most precious franchises of all: Batman.

Not only that, he followed up Batman Begins with arguably the finest comic book adaptation in history in The Dark Knight. A film that featured one of the best villains we’ve ever seen!

Then what?

He begins to work on a 160 million dollar passion project called Inception

The hype begins to build.

How will he follow up after the success of The Dark Knight?

Inception was a phenomenal film.  It really is a modern day classic and a masterful piece of filmmaking.  Sounds pretty deep but it is such an intelligent story that’s filled with entertaining action and visuals.  How can you not praise the high level of creativity.  Whether you loved Inception or not you have to admit it was a pretty clever story.

When you compare that to The Last Airbender, it stops being a competition.

Nolan wins this round and as a result…

I have a new favorite director!

The Aftermath

The race was actually closer than you might think. I have a deep respect for both of these directors.  They have each created films that have inspired the writer I wish to become someday.

We all owe a small measure of our success to those who inspired us to go down an unknown road.  A road that may not lead to success at all but thanks to films like Inception and Signs, I’m determined to find out where it goes.

I just had 7 straight days off.  4 of them were spent filming our newest short film!

Today, it was back to reality and my career as a professional editor.  It was also time to catch up on what I missed in the world of movies.

The top 2 stories for me?

Inception and Super 8 released incredible trailers!

Christopher Nolan and J.J Abrams are my idols.  Not only do they make unbelievable films but they also know how to make them FUN to look forward to!

I can’t wait for these movies!

I still have no idea what Inception is about but I love that.  Super 8 has the same feel.  What the hell is in that damn train!  I want answers!

Christopher Nolan M. Night Shyamala

M. Night Shyamalan has been my favorite director for years.  Signs is by far my favorite movie of all time and The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and to a lesser extent The Village are all solid and original movies.

That’s why he became my favorite director.

However, few would argue that he has been stumbling lately.

Christopher Nolan is a genius. The man behind The Dark Knight (My second favorite movie) deserves all the credit he has received over the years.  Memento, The Prestige to the Batman films are some of the most well made and entertaining films of all time.

With Inception, Batman 3 and even mentoring the new Superman movie on the horizon, he’s showing no signs of slowing down.

So the title of Favorite Director is officially up for grabs.

The Battle Begins This Summer

Nolan’s Inception is my most anticipated movie of 2010 for about 2 million reasons. (Click here to read a few of them)  The movie just looks cool.  There aren’t many stylized action films with this level of originality, mystery and hype.  The last one I can think that had me this excited was The Matrix.

I can’t wait to see Inception.

M. Night Shyamalan also has a new movie coming out this summer.  The Last Airbender looks decent but it can’t claim half the hype that Inception has.  However, it does look like an incredibly fun ride.  I honestly think this movie will be a return to form for the director.

Both filmmakers are basically tied at this point but as the summer approaches, I’ll be allowing the film fanatic within to determine which film inspires me the most.

When the dust settles, Mr. Shyamalan may remain my favorite director. He’ll always be the director who truly inspired me to pursue screenwriting as more than just a hobby.

On the other hand, Mr. Nolan has created some of the most memorable film moments in recent history.

Who will win?

Movies inspire me. I’m loyal to directors who fuel my passion for films so this is definitely a difficult call.

I’ll be a fan of them both for the rest of my life no matter who comes out on top.  Having said that, there must be a winner of this epic battle.  I’ll let there movies do the talking this summer!

Inception Looks Cool!

February 17th, 2010 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies - (1 Comments)

Inception Poster Christopher Nolan 2010

Inception is easily my most anticipated movie of 2010.  Director Christopher Nolan has once again taken a hold of my imagination with another amazing project.  How does he keep coming up with these brilliant ideas?

Or more importantly…

What the hell is this movie about?

The first trailer reveals nothing about the story except that your mind is the scene of the crime… I don’t know what that means.

Yet the images in this incredible teaser trailer are so intriguing that it’s hard not to be excited about what Mr. Nolan and crew have in store for us this July.  This type of marketing is proof that you don’t have to show off everything to sell a movie to the public.  People like to be surprised.

The Dark Knight’s viral marketing campaign is another example of this.  It took forever to get a good look at Heath Ledger’s Joker.  It drove me crazy.

Point.  Nolan.

If the second trailer doesn’t blow your mind you need to ask yourself if you’re a film fan or not.

Here is another trailer filled with insane images, effects and style.  Yet we still don’t know what the movie is actually about.  I’ve spoken to a few people who find this frustrating but everyone still agrees that it’s one of the coolest looking movies to come along in  a while.

It’s not everyday you get this kind of hype for a non sequel.  (Cloverfield comes to mind as the last original movie that dominated my imagination like this.)

Christopher Nolan hasn’t delivered a boring film yet so you can bet I’ll be in line when this movie opens.

I can’t wait.

I may not know anything about the story but the one thing it has is a cool concept and a visionary director who knocks it out of the park every time.
