Stop Everything & Watch A Movie

October 30th, 2010 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies - (0 Comments)

I try to work as much as possible.

Whether it’s my career as a professional editor, my production company 17 West, screenwriting or this blog, I’m usually busy doing something.

Now that I’m finished with the relaunch of 17west.ca, I finally decided to take a day off and actually… Relax.

What do I do when I’m relaxing?

I watch movies!

I think it’s easy to ignore the reason why I wanted to become a filmmaker in the first place.  I love to watch movies.

Good (and bad) movies inspire me.

Yet somehow, over the last few months, I forgot to take time away from work and enjoy a good flick.

So during my ‘actual’ day off, I watched The Book Of Eli and Swingers.

I hadn’t seen either film before but they reminded me that there are still thousands of incredible movies I have yet to see.

I still haven’t put a dent in this list.

A while back, I had an interesting adventure in a cab where the driver literally scolded me because I’ve never seen Amadeus.

In a strange way, he was right.

Sometimes, the best way to get things done is to take some time to yourself and clear your mind.

Watching a few movies refueled my imagination and I was ready to get back to work.

From now on, I’ll be taking even more time to watch movies.

Screenwriting Screenplay Blog

Today happens to be my 27th birthday.

Fun Fact: My Screenwriter’s New Years is fast approaching as well.

I like to reflect on what I have accomplished on days like today.  More importantly, I like to set goals for the following year.

After spending two years developping websites, directing two short films, building this blog and writing short screenplays I’ve made a decision.

27 will be the year of the screenwriter!

I love writing screenplays.  It’s been my passion for literally decades now but I’m the first to admit I haven’t written many features lately. (Or shorts for that matter)

So I’ve challenged myself to be better and today I’m putting it in writing.

The other day I was discussing the difference between a screenwriter and someone who writes screenplays.  There is a big difference.  Screenwriter’s write and their material gets produced.

Through 17 West, I’ve had a bunch of my work produced but I’m addicted now.  I want more.

I have to write more! Plain and simple.

It’s time to light a fire and get to work.

There.  I said it.

Read: Shut up, sit down and write screenplays.

The Athletic Nerd On Screenwriting

In addition to this new found focus on my new screenplays, I’m also going to be pumping up the screenwriting section of this blog.  This journey isn’t going to be easy and I’ll be writing more and more about the wonderful craft of screenwriting. (As always, I have to open up photoshop and make a new logo.)

Are you an aspiring screenwriter?  What inspires you?

This is one of the nerdiest times of the year for me. I’ve always been a pretty big fan of video games and there is no bigger stage than the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

E3

Watching Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo and countless other developers unveil the future of video games inspires me every single year in a way you wouldn’t expect.

I’m not a video game designer or a tech expert but I am heavily involved in creative mediums.  Honestly, there is something inspiring about watching companies launch new titles and technology.

Personally, it makes me want to work on new projects and create new material.  It reminds me that I have the freedom to create virtually any type of script/project I want.

Why not create something new?

Currently, I’m editing our latest short film, writing a feature and putting together a book.  Each of those projects received a significant boost this week as I was driven to make progress thanks to E3.

Beyond that, the show inspired me to sit down and develop some new ideas.  I even added a few new features to this blog.

I’m also really excited for some of the new games coming out this year!

It’s been a good week.

PS: Goldeneye remake!  Sweet.
