The Athletic Nerd's Top 5 Movies Of 2011

This year’s top 5 is kind of incomplete.  I started off 2011 on a tear.  I had seen so many movies including nearly all of the summer blockbusters.  But when it came down to the awards season, I missed out on a ton of great movies.  So while I wait for films like The Descendents & The Artist to be released On Demand, I have to go with what I’ve seen.

This year’s top 5 includes several that inspired the filmmaker in me including the awesome movie sitting in the number 1 spot.  As a result, I don’t think there is a movie I missed that could knock out this year’s champ.  It’s a film that I’m proud to put next to 2009′s Paranormal Activity and 2010′s Inception.

5. Source Code

Source Code really surprised me.  I highly enjoyed Duncan Jones’ Moon and he raised the bar even higher with Source Code.

4. 50/50

50/50 was a perfect balance of humor and drama.  Personally, I was really interested to see how this movie accomplished that balance.  About 3 years ago, I created a film with similar themes that also balanced humor with the serious subject of cancer.  Watching 50/50 was a phenomenal experience as both a filmmaker and a film fan.

It was touching, sad, enlightening, inspiring, funny, depressing, interesting and heart warming.  Seth Rogen & Joseph Gordon-Levitt are a perfect team.

3. Drive

The last movie I saw in 2011 skyrocketed up my rankings to land in the top 5.  It’s such a well told and stylized film with a wicked performance from Ryan Gosling.

2. Warrior

Warrior wins the award for longest wait.  I couldn’t find the time to see it in theaters and when it was released on video I still couldn’t set aside a couple hours to watch.  It was well worth the wait.  I loved Warrior.

1. Super 8

I grew up in the 80s making movies with my friends.  We used to walk to the dollar store, purchase toy guns and spray paint them black as we completed our action movies, war epics and comedies.  This movie was made for me.  Super 8 inspired me and it still does when I think about how much fun I had in the theater that day.  (And how much fun I had making movies as a kid.)

2011s top movie…  Super 8.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol Lights A Fuse | Review

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED BRAD BIRD… FOR THE MOST PART

J.J. Abrams‘ Mission Impossible 3 is by far my favorite in the series but I had high hopes that Ghost Protocol would raise the bar even higher for the franchise.  The truth is, this new installment does raises the bar on multiple levels but it also falls short in a pretty major way…

When Ethan Hunt says ‘Light the fuse’ and we are treated to a gorgeous opening sequence.  I was thrilled.  Brad Bird is an amazing director and you can tell immediately that he is right at home in a live action world.  From there we get tons of awesome action sequences and stunts that make this series great.  The entire sequence in Dubai is absolutely remarkable and especially brilliant on the IMAX screen.  When Ethan steps out to scale a giant skyscraper, you definitely feel like you’re over 100 stories in the air.  It’s pretty cool.

And then to follow it up with a sweet car chase in the middle of a vicious sand storm?  Not too mention a great prison escape in the opening act.  Well done Mr. Bird.

The rest of the film is full of action and a couple twists I highly enjoyed.  Everyone on Hunt’s team fits in although I did miss Luther’s humor.  Thankfully, the film more than makes up it with Simon Pegg’s Benji who is in fine form once again here.  The big addition to the franchise is Jeremy Renner.  I thought they did an amazing job incorporating him into the story and making his character more than just a member of the team.

What I really loved about Ghost Protocol were the constant glitches in the team’s plan.  Literally, nothing goes right and they are constantly forced to improvise with the threat of nuclear war imminent.  In the past, Ethan would outline an impossible stunt involving an aerial leap of some kind and then we would watch it play out.  That worked in the previous 3 films but this time they are out of their element with no support.  It makes sense that their plans would be flawed.  I thought it was a great way to introduce the different stunts.

GREAT ACTION.  GREAT LAUGHS… BUT…

What I did NOT love about the film was the villain.  Part 3 brought us Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s brilliant Owen Davian.  Mr. Davian was ruthless and his battle with Ethan Hunt was as personal as it gets.

‘What’s his name?’ from this new movie is barely involved in the film.  He rarely speaks and is disconnected from the tale.  While his plot to start a war between the U.S and Russia is believable, movies like this are only as strong as the villain.  That is where Ghost Protocol fell short for me.

Perhaps I put too much pressure on the film to surpass moments when Davian screamed;

“You don’t think I’ll do it?!”

There is nothing like that in M:I4.  Nothing except a random middle aged man with superior fighting skills and ONE henchman who has little to do.  It’s sad but it doesn’t completely break the movie.  I just think it would have been better if I cared about the villain instead of trying to remember what his name was.  Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is a worthy addition to the franchise and a fun action movie.  It rarely slows down and looks gorgeous on the big screen.

Why Christopher Nolan Loves Star Wars | Movie Blog

Christopher Nolan is by far my favorite director and recently, this little video was released revealing his thoughts on Star Wars.

After I found that video, I decided to look into some more of my favorite directors.

Did you know R2D2 is in J.J Abrams’ Star Trek?

Just because, here is an in depth interview with J.J included some thoughts on the similarities between Star Trek and Star Wars.  (Courtesy of Hero Complex)

Before Christopher Nolan took over, M. Night Shyamalan was my favorite director.  He may not be the champ anymore but I still adore Signs.  However, there are some comparisons between Shyamalan and George Lucas.

In my travels I also came across From Star Wars to Jedi: The Making of a Saga.

Then I got distracted even further when I stumbled across The 10 Most Badass Fan-Made Lightsabre duels over at Unreality.

Back on track, Zak Snyder enjoys Unicorn Yoda cake?

David Fincher was an assistant cameraman on Return of the Jedi!?

Of course I’m missing a ton of directors like Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott, Peter Jackson, Francis Ford Coppola and more that I adore but how could I leave out Lucas’ pal Steven Spielberg?  Did you know he wept at a screening of Episode 3?

My Favorite Directors & Star Wars | Movie Blog

I could probably spend days looking up interesting references to Star Wars.  Have any hidden gems?

Fall Television: Adding New Shows To Your Team | 2011 New Season Television Blog

Over the course of the summer, I discovered two new shows that I’ve happily added to my list of obsessions. Fringe and Game of Thrones.

Let’s start with Fringe. I honestly can’t believe it took me three seasons before I finally gave the show a shot. It’s not like I avoided it. I simply never had (or took) the opportunity to sit through an episode. The tales alternate dimensions and freaky science evaded me regardless of J.J Abrams’ involvement and the shows mystery driven story arc. Much like Lost, one of my favorite shows of all time, each episode contained an incredible story while continually developing a larger mythology.

Fringe should have taken a hold of me the second the pilot premiered years ago. Except it didn’t and quite frankly neither did Lost. I didn’t discover Lost until the end of the fourth season! Some might argue that catching up on a television show is a great way to avoid cliffhangers for long periods of time. Especially between seasons. This is true to a certain extent as pushing play on the next episode is better than waiting for an entire week but did I miss out on the “Lost” experience?

Fall Television: Adding New Shows To Your Team

The answer is yes and became apparent to me when I arrived at work the day after a mind-blowing episode in season 5. People were talking about it and I knew what they were talking about. I experienced those last two seasons with the rest of the world. While it sucks to have to wait a week for a new episode, the whole point is to experience the anticipation and wonder.

The same can be said about Game of Thrones. I didn’t start watching until the first season was over. I caught up On Demand. If I didn’t listen to the advice of some co-workers, I would have never discovered the show.

Finding television shows that capture your imagination like that can be difficult. You never know which shows will take hold. I know I didn’t think Fringe would.

YOUR SHOWS.  YOUR TEAM

Each day another show takes the field and you hope it delivers. My team lost a couple great players over the last few years. Some shows, like Lost, retired but others got demoted like the increasingly disappointing True Blood.

This Fall, I’m ready to sign some new shows and add them to my team which features heavy hitters like Dexter, Fringe and The Walking Dead. There are a lot of spots open but many will not make the cut.

I’m excited to discover new shows from the beginning this year. My PVR is in for a work out as I add new dramas to my lineup.

With another year of amazing television upon us, here are my top 3 prospects looking to make the big leagues this season:

Terra Nova

Person of Interest

Alcatraz

Final Destination 5 Trailer…  Still Not Pumped

I’ve never been a fan of this series.  I suppose you might.  I saw the first and figured that was all I needed to see.  This new trailer features a couple cool sequences.  Personally, I have a high level of discomfort for ‘eye’ horror.  I squirm.  If you look at the 1:12 mark there’s a pretty lazy edit.  Guy gets doused in hot oil and the next shot he is wandering around in the background.  Nobody caught that?

The Myth of the American Sleepover Trailer

I’m a big fan of dramas like this.  Decent trailer too.

5 Days Of War Trailer Starts Slow… But…

It finishes strong.  It got me interested.

“Happy, happy…  It’s only a war.”

Restless Trailer

Another great trailer from the director of Good Will Hunting. Which just happens to be one of my favorite movies.

Here’s a pretty cool look at the complicated visual effects for the upcoming Rise of The Planet of the Apes.  Still not a fan of the longer title.

Even More Movie Stuff

-Check out this really bad trailer for a movie called Jack and Jull starring Adam Sandler as both a man and a woman…

-The trailer for Amigo is pretty great.  I enjoy movies like this.

-Juan of the dead.  Don’t ask.  Just watch.
