The Dark Knight Rises Advetising Campaign Begins

CHRISTOPHER NOLAN’S HYPE TRAIN HAS LEFT THE STATION!

The Dark Knight’s viral campaign was remarkable to say the least.  Each and every poster, trailer, TV spot, website and Easter egg built up an ‘event’ rather than just another summer release.

With Inception, Nolan and his team were tasked with promoting an entirely new and complex world.  The resulting marketing campaign was amazing and once again, the movie delivered on the incredible hype surrounding it.

I’ve always been fascinated by movie marketing.   Successes and failures.  It’s incredible to think about how many times a trailer promotes a movie that doesn’t really exist.  Misleading trailers and horrific posters comprised of floating heads and bad Photoshop are everywhere.  But there are also trailers you have to watch 42 times the day they show up online.  There are posters you save as your desktop wallpaper.  There are inspiring promotional materials everywhere.

Throughout the last 5-10 years, Christopher Nolan and his team have done a remarkable job selling the movies he directs.  I remember when people doubted whether or not a Batman ‘reboot’ could truly erase the horror that is Batman & Robin…   It did.

The brilliant marketing behind these epic films evolved as the world did embracing social media and the power of viral marketing.  I still remember following all the scavenger hunts and clues ‘The Joker’ left in strategic locations.  Promotional materials for The Dark Knight were everywhere.  They led to unique and secret websites.  They revealed hints about the plot.  They generated hype.

Of course, we all saw the results of that marketing campaign.  533 Million domestic and an Oscar for Heath Ledger’s legendary performance as The Joker.

Who knows what’s in store for the final chapter of this incredible film series.  The Dark Knight Rises is still months away but it’s clear the marketing campaign will once again raise the bar. We’ve already been treated to an amazing teaser trailer giving us our first brief glimpse of Bane.  It was a trailer largely comprised of reused footage from the first 2 films…  And it was amazing.

I wasn’t surprised.  The teaser for The Dark Knight didn’t contain any footage at all and it still gives me chills.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES PROLOGUE

Nolan and co. just unleashed a 6 minute prologue in front of IMAX prints of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.  I had a ticket for a 2pm screening and had to take a bus, a subway and a cab to get there on time.  I’m thankful I did.  To say that the sequence is big is an understatement.  It’s like Nolan sat in a room and thought about how cool it was to flip over a transport in The Dark Knight.  Then he challenged himself to go bigger.

“I know… Let’s flip and rip apart a PLANE…  In mid air!”

Everyone’s reactions are generally the same online.  The prologue is incredible but some of Bane’s lines are difficult to understand.  While it’s true, it does give Nolan the opportunity to go back and clean up some of the lines through ADR.  What I don’t understand is how some people objected to Bane’s accent.  I think his voice sounds awesome overall when you can understand what he is saying.  It’s an amazing introduction to a relentless and volatile Bane.  I can’t wait to see him break Batman.

TRAILER #2

Just days after unleashing a fantastic poster and the epic prologue sequence, fans were also treated to a brand new and equally awesome trailer!

“When Gotham is ashes…  You have my permission to die.”

It’s another phenomenal trailer that gives us a glimpse at all the major characters without spoiling much of the story.  Check out this link for a detailed breakdown of the prologue and trailer.  There are a few shots of a cane suggesting Batman/Bruce Wayne is seriously injured in some way.  Will Bane break the Bat?  It makes me sad that July 20th, 2012 is so far away…

All of these announcements and reveals have been supported by secret ‘leaked’ CIA documents, websites, tweets, features in magazines and more.  Who knows what more we can expect from the film’s marketing department in the next 9 months.

I certainly helps the impossibly long wait before we get to see the film.

The Athletic Nerd Movies Screenwriting Independent Film Blog

In it’s simplest form, The Athletic Nerd is the home of 17 West Productions.

17W is my production company that I co-run with producer/director Eric Gamache.

Originally, The Nerd lived at 17west.ca and basically existed so people would have a reason to return to our site while we were between films.

It’s not easy getting traffic to a website that no one is searching for.

People didn’t know us.

Back in those days, I wasn’t knowledgeable enough in web design to create a full featured blog. I created each page from scratch and the process became tedious.

The content suffered.

It also became clear to me that our company’s page was no place for my personal views and opinions on movies.

I decided to move the content to a brand new blog. A place to write about filmmaking, screenwriting and of course, the progress of 17W.

The Athletic Nerd was born.

Since then, I’ve worked hard to integrate and interlink both sites together. Daily updates. Traffic.

The results have been amazing thus far with our films receiving far more exposure. Once google found this blog, more and more people made their way to our home page.

I’m happy I made the decision to move the blog to it’s own site.

It gave me the freedom to talk about more than just 17 West.

It allowed me to have fun and write about what I’m personally passionate about.

It gave me a place to share my experiences as a filmmaker with others. To network. To expand my knowledge of both indie film and building a personal blog.

It’s been challenging to develop a unique style but it’s something I continue to work at everyday.

The overall goal is simple.

I love movies and I love filmmaking.

The Athletic Nerd gives me a wonderful place to discuss one while promoting the other.

I can write about the screenwriting craft and how mesmerizing it is to look at a blank page and imagine the possibilities.

Above all else, I love to write about what inspires me. It’s all about the movies we love.

It’s been one year.

I’ve never been more dedicated.

Filmmakers. Fans. Independent Film

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Thomas James Longley, one of the stars of the upcoming indie horror film Sparrow.

The low budget feature was shot in Poland and is set for release this Halloween.  It was directed by Shaun Troke and written by Matthew Mosley.

Here is the synopsis from the IMDB page:

Six teenage friends take a camping trip to a forest which is the site of a presumed historic murder. But their disbelief in this urban legend is soon changed when strange happenings begin to occur to each of them.

Sparrow Movie 2010 Horror

I’ve always been a fan of  indie horror films so I was excited to find out how the film intends to stand out.

“It’s simplicity.  It doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not and I think because of that it can never fall into the trap that so many horrors have done before.  It’s just meant to be scary, a bit jumpy….  Hopefully the fans will respond to that.”

I couldn’t agree more.  Sometimes, all a horror fan needs is a straight forward thrill ride full of scares and when it comes to low budget features, simplicity is also a great way to keep costs down.

Sparrow Movie 2010 Horror

Another great way to keep costs down these days is to use Social Media tools to your advantage. In addition to the usual suspects like Facebook, the filmmakers decided to approach film blogs individually to get the word out.  (That’s how this post came to be.) It’s a lot of work but in the end it’s a great way to get the word out.

Longley credits producer Wojciech Stuchlik for the creative approach.

“A Facebook page and official site were set up, and Flickr I think too.  Of course these mediums really allow for the film to to get some kind of immediate exposure/interest which naturally helps.”

Years ago, one could never have imagined connecting an independent horror production in Poland with a Toronto based film blog but that’s what makes this an exciting time.  Not only can indie filmmakers network easier than ever but you can also generate a lot of buzz for your project for next to nothing.

Speaking personally, it’s great to hear from fellow filmmakers.

Sparrow Movie 2010 Horror

Sparrow is currently in post production and Longley says the film’s release is on schedule and hopes to see it accepted into festivals worldwide.

Check out the film’s official site here.

Best of luck Sparrow team!

17 West Productions

A long time ago, I discovered Kwoon.  Essentially, a group of Kung Fu students got together and made 4 episodes of a martial arts parody… thing.  I think their ultimate goal was to get the series on network television but to my knowledge, it didn’t work out.

Strangely enough, it wasn’t the episodes that caught my attention but rather the extra videos they put on their site. Writer/Director Todd Roy took Kwoon on a massive tour of Comic Conventions and brought a camera along for a ride. (A nifty steady-cam rig no less.)

I bought the DVD as it promised to be packed with dozens of these videos in addition to the main episodes of the show.  As an aspiring filmmaker, what I learned was how much effort you have to put in to promote your films.  Team Kwoon did a pretty phenomenal job getting themselves noticed.  One particular video stayed with me to this day.

It was called No Money Marketing.

In it, Todd humorously demonstrated various marketing tips like writing your website on currency, sticking promo stickers to cats and food items and more…  It wasn’t meant to be serious but he had a point.

You have to do whatever it takes to gain exposure in the industry and get your projects noticed.

These days, we  have a lot more tools at our disposal than he did. Thanks to the social networking explosion, small production companies like 17W can market themselves for virtually nothing.   The upside to this strategy is limitless and all it costs is time.

Over the last year, I’ve logged a ton of hours building a tiny network for 17 West Productions.

Not to mention our own personal Facebook pages and IMDB profiles.

With every single one of those sites linked back to 17west.ca, I hope that people will stumble upon us and stick around for a lot of interesting content and updates.

I’m the first person to admit that we don’t score thousands of page hits a day.  However, I can sleep at night knowing we’re well represented on the web.

You have to start somewhere right?

PS: If anyone wants an extremely reliable web hosting service, I highly recommend www.startlogic.com.  Awesome customer support for idiots like me and simple to use. (Also mention 17west and we get 10 bucks!)
