James Bond returns!

The Weekly Big Story in movie news

new james bond movie title skyfall

We now know a ton of official details about the newest James Bond adventure.  Not the least of which is the title of the film, Skyfall.  Personally, I can’t wait to see Mr. Bond taking on Javier Bardem.  I’ve included the entire press conference below.

So, is Skyfall the best James Bond movie title of all time?

The newest trailers

PROJECT X

From the director of Old School and The Hangover comes another found footage project that looks awesome… And funny.

SAFE HOUSE

Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds in a sweet looking CIA thriller.  That pretty much sums it up I think.

WANDERLUST

WE BOUGHT A ZOO

Sometimes, all you need is a good Cameron Crowe movie.  I’m really starting to think this might be it.

UNDERWORLD AWAKENING

Am I going to see this movie?  Probably not..  Are you?

21 JUMP STREET

Meh…  At least it’s a red band trailer though.  Actually I changed my mind, this trailer has it’s moments.

CANADIAN FEATURE FILM ‘CODY FITS’ GETS A TRAILER

More on this film soon!

This week’s featured post is all about screenwriting and what inspires the words on the page.  Is it a pool?  A grey hair? A video game? The weather? A music video?  Your worst fear?  You never really know when inspiration will strike.  You just have to do your best to be ready when it does.

Introducing: THE POST!

September 23rd, 2011 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in The Post - (0 Comments)

The best movies, screenwriting & independent film content on the web

NEW FEATURE ARRIVES!

The Post is a brand new and exciting addition to The Athletic Nerd’s stable of regular features.  In a world full of amazing content, there are countless opportunities to share.  Until now, my preferred method of sharing has been the Tweet button.  That spreads the word but it doesn’t give me a chance to go in depth on the content that inspires me.

The Post is my answer to that problem.  I can now feature news, videos, websites, short films, trailers, opinions and more.

Do you have an article about movies, screenwriting or independent film you’d like to see featured on The Athletic Nerd?  Do you have a film you would like to promote?

2011 HALL OF FAME: Movie Website | Joblo Movie Site

The very first inductee into the brand new Athletic Nerd Hall of Fame will be in the category of movie websites.

JOBLO

2011 HALL OF FAME: Movie Website | Joblo Movie Site

When I first became obsessed with checking movie websites every day, I stumbled across Joblo.com and I’ve been a daily visitor ever since.  The site is constantly being updated with new headlines from the film industry in addition to awesome regular columns, podcasts, videos, reviews, interviews and more.

Not only that, Joblo is a part of a much larger network of movies sites that includes: Arrow In The Head, Digital Dorm & Movie Fan Central, Joblo’s film focused social network.

What I love about the website is the handy left column which features dozens of recent stories.  So many blogs these days rely on the ‘next page’ and it’s nice to see a website go a different way.  It’s a very simple way to scan the news items you’re interested in.  (It’s a design element that inspired the sidebar on this blog)

Most importantly, Joblo is not just a news site.  It’s about news and opinion so you aren’t just getting a headline and a press release.  You’re getting insight from obsessed film fans and honest reviews from people who love movies.

Personally, I have Joblo to thank for inspiring me to follow the latest movie news religiously but also inspiring the creation of this blog.  Joblo.com and I go way back and this was an easy choice.

The Rundown Ep. 33

The Rundown Ep. 33 | Movie Headlines | Weekly Movie News Recap

Superman May Actually Use His Powers?

The last Superman movie felt like a waste.  Obviously we got several moments where he ‘saved the day’ but it really seemed like he was being held back.  Will Zack Snyder’s reboot unleash the Man of Steel?  This first official image is a step in the right direction.

Official Superman Man Of Steel Costume 2012

Catwoman Looks Out Of Place

While the first look at Superman is encouraging, Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in The Dark Knight Rises looks out of place.  Maybe it’s the fact that she is riding the Bat Pod but those goggles are way to big for her face.  I’m starting to secretly hope that it’s a minor role but I trust Christopher Nolan and I’m more than happy to admit I’m wrong if she fits in…

Lucasfilm Without Temples Or Lightsabers?

Red Tails looks like a fantastic… tale.  More than that the aerial battles are spectacular.  It’s a far cry from a galaxy far far away but I’ll take it.

Invisible Lightning Ball Aliens!

The trailer for The Darkest Hour has arrived and while I’m skeptical of the film overall, I can’t deny the effects look great.  The way those human beings disintegrate into dust is pretty sweet.

‘Grave Encounters’ Some Blair Witch Activity

Every so often, a movie comes along that seems to only be capitalizing on the latest crazy.  In this case, found footage ghost stories.  However, there are moments in this trailer that may convince you to allow another player in the game.  I’m certainly looking forward to Grave Encounters.

Even More Movie Stuff

-Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy

-Francis Ford Coppola is back with a strange entry called ‘Twixt’

-Another ‘Apes’ visual effects breakdown from Weta

-’Like Crazy‘ trailer.

-More testosterone in The Killer Elite trailer #2

The Rundown Ep. 32

The Rundown Ep. 32 | Movie Headlines | Weekly Movie News Recap

This Rundown was doomed before the week began.  It’s hard to top a week that included trailers for The Dark Knight Rises AND The Amazing Spider-Man.  Having said that, there were a couple great trailers released this week.

The Battleship Board Game Had Aliens?

A movie based on the Battleship board game sounds horrific at first.  It gets worse when you introduce aliens into the mix…  However, an alien movie with naval combat LOOKS a lot better than it sounds.  Perhaps the Battleship movie will be more than a bunch of begs and plastic boats?

I’ve been fascinated by Kevin Smith’s plan for Red State.  Changing the release model for a film is tough and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.
