Rainy Sundays: Uncle Buck

November 15th, 2009 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies | Rainy Sundays - (0 Comments)

It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 16 years since John Candy passed away.  He’s been in so many comedies I love.  He’s part of an exclusive list of people that can make you laugh so easily you feel like they’re your best friend.

Remember Barf?  There’s no way you’ve made it this far into the post and not smiled yet.

spaceballs4

Spaceballs definitely deserves to be on this list someday.  However, today I want to discuss another absolute classic.  Uncle Buck.

Uncle Buck is a perfect Rainy Sunday flick.  Let me explain why…  Have you ever put a lot of effort into a sandwich?  I mean a giant record breaking sandwich?  Have you ever gathered the necessary amounts of cheese, crackers, pickles and baby carrots to go with it?  How about an enormous glass of milk to accompany the meal?  To me that’s a perfect lunch.  (I love sandwiches.)  The only thing better than a perfect lunch is a great movie to go with it.  I recommend Uncle Buck.

“Holy smokes!  He’s cooking our garbage…”

I categorize Uncle Buck as easy watching.  Relaxing afternoons are perfect for a good meal, a great movie and an amazing power nap once it’s over.  We’ve all been there.  You get on your couch with a blanket and before you know it, 2 hours have gone by and you wake up feeling fantastic.  (I would really love to take a nap right now.  I consider power napping a hobby)

Uncle Buck also represents one of the hardest laughing fits I’ve ever had with 2 of my close friends.  The three of us had a house in college and we used to watch movies like Uncle Buck all the time while recovering from viscious hangovers.  The following clip made us laugh non-stop for hours.  Since then we all do ‘the laugh’ whenever we think about Uncle Buck. (hee hee hee)

Uncle Buck.  Another Classic.

The World Series is over.  Hockey is officially the King of Canada again.  Not that the throne was ever in jeopardy.  Baseball thought it was King but that was only an illusion.  In Canada, Hockey is the ONLY sport.  I’m a basketball fan myself.  (Kind of a rebel that way.)  I don’t play by Canada’s rules…  Although I am a pretty big hockey fan as well.

Speaking from a professional stand point, this is the time of year when hockey is on my network all the time.  There’s no escaping it.  Just last night we put 4 separate games featuring all 6 Canadian teams on television.  I’m surrounded by hockey 12 hours a day.  (For the record, I’m not complaining.)

It got me thinking about another classic and the 2nd entry in the Rainy Sunday collection, The Mighty Ducks.  Here’s another movie I could watch over and over again.  I’d like to tell you a brief story.  A few days ago, I really wanted to watch this movie so I began scanning my collection.  After 2 or 3 scans, I couldn’t find it.  Had I loaned it out to someone?  Did the jerk not give it back?  Then I sat down and thought for a moment…  I don’t even own that movie.  How is that possible?  I need that box set immediately.

Growing up, nothing sparked more street hockey games than watching the Ducks battle the Hawks.  It takes me back to playing organized sports as a kid.  I never played hockey but Basketball, Baseball and Volleyball were always around.  These movies were flat out inspiring to young athletes.  Many of which are probably pros right now.  I’m willing to bet Sidney Crosby tried the flying V at some point in his life.

We all did.  Be honest, how many times did you try the patented triple deke growing up?  You remember it right?  1, 2, 3, triple deke… ding!  Awwwwwwwwww off the post again.

I’m a firm believer that there isn’t a single Canadian hockey player alive who hasn’t attempted the Knuckle Puck at some point.

There’s something familiar about these types of movies that unite large groups of people.  People who look back and remember quacking with other people and looking normal.  (FUN FACT: I just read that an actual duck quacking doesn’t echo.  Fact?  Myth?  You decide.)

I could watch Coach Bombay and District 5 any time.  (It’s ironic that currently I cannot.)  Even the sequel was amazing if not better.  D2 sent chills down my spine every time.  Stupid Gunnar Stahl.  I was lucky enough to win a few championships in various sports growing up and those movies are a way to travel back to those exciting times.  I still remember the pile ups and  singing “We Are The Champions”.  We did that because the Ducks did.  (Although they did it around a fire after winning the gold.)

Those memories stick with you for life.  So do movies that take you back again and again.

The Mighty Ducks.  Another worthy addition to Rainy Sundays.

PS: Flying V in NHL 09!

Rainy Sundays: The Sandlot

November 3rd, 2009 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies | Rainy Sundays - (1 Comments)

“You’re killing me Smalls!”

rennaIn honor of the amazing World Series ending last night, (Congrats Yankees…  I still hate you.)  I thought I would start a new feature on the blog.  A look back at the classic movies that I’ve loved for years.  Even people who don’t like movies have films on this list.  Lets say you’re flicking around the channels and you come across a beloved movie from your past.  You’re stopping to watch it.  You’ll even watch it on television with the commercial free DVD sitting on the shelf beside you.  You can’t resist.  It’s a classic.  Your classic.

The Yankees/Phillies series was pretty much outstanding and the entire time I’ve been looking for a few free hours to watch my favorite baseball movie. The Sandlot. (I haven’t found the time yet but it’s on my list nonetheless.)  I believe anyone who grew up surrounding themselves with sports has a soft spot for this movie.  Who wouldn’t?  If I sat down and made a list of my favorite sports movies of all time, it would be hard to find one to knock The Sandlot off the top spot.  That’s saying something because you could make a pretty strong list of JUST baseball movies.  Seriously, look at Hamilton ‘The Babe’ Porter over there.  (Other nicknames include the obvious Ham and Long Ball Porter.)  That kid still makes me laugh every time I see it.

“This is baseball, not tennis, gimme something to hit.”

squintsNot to mention our old pal Squints.  I don’t know a soul on this planet brave enough to pull the moves on Wendy Peffercorn like that.  (Note:  I thought it was Peppercorn until a quick google search proved otherwise. Woops)  The entire cast was hilarious and the story is so simple it’s impossible not to relate.

A ball with Babe Ruth’s signature goes over the fence where a massive dog lives to terrorize the team.  I suppose it’s a little more complicated than that but it’s an amazing kids movie that still stands up today and I’m 26 years old.

You can easily walk into a circle of sports fans, quote this movie and be instantly accepted amongst them.  I know I pull out Squints’ “Fore-ver” from time to time.  I remember when this movie came out on DVD, I couldn’t find it anywhere so I ordered it from Amazon because I couldn’t wait anymore.  A few friends of mine found out and I actually had to order 3.  It probably would’ve been a lot more if more people found out I was ordering it.  Everyone around me loved The Sandlot.  When we were kids, I can’t remember a pick up game that ended without someone calling their shot, smoking a deep fly ball and screaming:

“Low and outside, just like I like it!”

That’s what makes these films classics.  Movies that stick with you “Fore-ver”.  It’s because of the quotes that etch their way into your brain.  The way you can watch them over and over again without fast-forwarding the ‘boring parts’.  The movies you watch on rainy Sunday afternoons spent in front of the television with a bowl of soup and a massive comforter.  Perfect days.

I called this new feature ‘Rainy Sundays’ for a reason.  Couldn’t find a more suitable name than that.
