Doesn’t EVERYONE Love Movies?

January 18th, 2011 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies - (0 Comments)

I was picking up a few things at the drug store the other day and observed something…  Strange?

I don’t even know if it’s fair for me to call it strange.  Who am I to judge?  I thought everyone loved movies…

The cashier had to be brand new because the line was crawling and it was surprisingly busy.  As I waited to pay for my items a girl left her father in line to go search through the cheap DVD bin.

XTRA: The Irresistible Future Shop $5.99 DVD Bins

Her father seemed to be a pretty grumpy dude.  Dressed in plaid with greasy hands and wearing paint covered jeans he waited impatiently for the cashier to figure out how to enter a coupon.

I figured he spent all of his time outdoors.  I don’t.  He would probably think I’m strange for sitting in front of computer screens all day.

His daughter returned with 3 DVDs.  About a Boy was one of them but I couldn’t see the other 2.

The man was instantly confused.

“What are those?”

“Just a couple DVDs” she said quietly

“What are you going to do with them?”

“I don’t know… Watch them?”

“Why spend the money when you can watch movies on television for free?”

She didn’t respond.  She just shook her head.

I thought the comment was fascinating. What are you going to do with them? It was a completely genuine comment.  He simply didn’t understand the point of wasting money on movies when you can watch them on television.

It wasn’t about watching your favorites and watching them whenever you want.

I started wondering what his favorite movie was.  Did he even have one?  I began to think about what it must be like if he did have a favorite and it was NEVER on TV. How exciting would it be if you only got the chance to see your favorite movie when it was on television.

Those would be good days.

I would be like depriving yourself of ice cream for a year.  How amazing would that first spoonful taste?

On the other hand, maybe movies just don’t appeal to him.

Maybe there isn’t a movie for everyone?

Like I said, I think that’s strange but he would probably have strong opinions about my interests as well.

I wonder what it would be like to deprive myself of my favorite movies for a year?

It would be an interesting experiment.

Anyone else want to do it and tell me what it’s like? I’m not sure I have the will power.

10 Flicks Movie Lists

Each and every year, I look forward to watching those precious Christmas classics that have become traditions in my family.

Everyone has a favorite.  A holiday movie we ONLY watch one a year.  A film you simply can’t miss as Christmas approaches.

It differs from person to person but we all hold certain films close to our hearts.  Movies shared with family and friends.  Movies that embody the Christmas spirit.

Christmas classics are a perfect example of how films can become a treasured part of a family.

Here are 10 of my personal favorites:

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer

I remember looking in the TV guide for the Christmas Specials every year.  Shows like Charlie Brown, Garfield and Frosty the Snowman.  Yet Rudolph stands out as the one I loved the most growing up.  Creepy animation or not, it’s a cherished tradition in my house.

RUDOLPH THE REDNOSED REINDEER

A Christmas Story

I have a confession.  I have never seen this movie before.  When I was talking with some co-workers about this issue, I was on the receiving end of some pretty bad insults about my taste in movies.  Why did the film make this list?  Enough people I spoke with considered it amongst the all time classics.  It’s now on my must see list.  Mostly so I can avoid a similar roasting next year but also because if it’s a classic, I need to see it.

The Santa Claus

This is plain and simply an entertaining movie.

Home Alone

If I had to describe this movie using only 1 word it would by fun. This movie is on the list for anyone who has every placed both hands on their cheeks and screamed.  We’ve all done it.  Admit it…  Lets  move on.

Elf

Was there really any doubt that a Christmas movie starring Will Farrell as an elf wouldn’t be on this list?  I rest my case.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

This film gets the 10 Flicks award for catchy tunes.

“It’s in the singing of a street corner choir, it’s going home and getting warm by the fire.  It’s true wherever you find love, it feels like Christmas…”

Don’t act like you haven’t seen this movie and never caught yourself humming that tune.

marleyandmarley

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas

How can you make a list of classics and leave The Grinch out?  There was some debate on whether or not to include the cartoon or the Jim Carrey version.  I think everyone eventually agreed that the cartoon has been with us far longer and deserves to be on the list.

A Muppet Family Christmas

I have another 10 Flicks award to give out.  This yearly tradition gets the award for program everyone loves but can never find on TV or DVD.  I’ve gotta find a copy of this.

Mickey’s Christmas Carol

One of the greats.  It really is one of the best Christmas cartoons of all time and certainly one of the best Dickens adaptations we’ve ever seen.

Christmas Vacation

No matter who I asked, every single person mentioned Christmas Vacation.  It may not have been everyone’s favorite but it’s on everybody’s list.  Check out my Rainy Sunday post for more on this timeless Christmas Tradition.

PS: There’s my list.  What does yours look like?

10 Flicks: If I Could Only Own 10 Movies

I love collecting movies.

I take great pride in my growing collection of DVD’s.

The other day, I was looking over my modest collection of Blu Ray discs and got to thinking about which ones I would upgrade first.

This isn’t the first time I’ve thought about it either.  Remember VHS tapes?

This edition of 10 Flicks is kind of based on that idea.  What if I had to restart?

Here are the top 10 movies I’d own if I could only have 10.

My initial fear was that this list would simply become my top 10 favorite movies but you have to put some thought into these lists!

If you could only own 10 would you really want the same types of films?  You have to think long term.

So this list factors in special features and documentaries as well as the film itself.  (Also, series & box sets count as one.  Yes, I’m aware that may or may not be cheating.  I don’t feel bad.)

The Athletic Nerd Movies Screenwriting Independent Film Blog

It’s been over a year now since I began blogging about movies, screenwriting and independent film and you can still find new and original daily content.

Today, I reached post number 400 with no signs of slowing down anytime soon.

Here are some of the projects I’m currently working on:

17 West Upcoming Films – A couple new short films to be directed by Eric Gamache are in the works.  Budgeting has just begun.  In addition to that, we are still pushing forward on our musical project entitled Strings which we are co-producing with Mat Cousineau and UnoPark.

The Climb – Our latest short film is currently in post production with several announcements including the first trailer in the next few months.  Check out the poster here.

The New 17west.ca – Our home on the web has been completely redesigned and rebuilt from the ground up.  The new site will go live early in 2011.  Click here for a preview.

The Athletic Nerd – I’m currently working on some pretty excited and new features.  The launch of The Screenwriting Spark has been extremely successful thus far and you can also expect more interviews in the coming months.  You can also expect more All Time Best and 10 Flicks in addition to updates on all of 17 West’s films.

As always, if you have any suggestions feel free to comment or send me an email at jason@17west.ca.

Want your indie film featured on this blog?  Toss me an email with the details!

Cheers.

Jason.
