2009′s All Time Top 5 Movies

December 22nd, 2009 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies - (1 Comments)

I have a very different system of reviewing movies than most.  It’s based on a number of factors but I’ve come up with a list that sums things up nicely.

The Filmmaker’s Intentions – What did they set out to make?  It’s not fair to bash an action movie if you don’t like action movies is it?  If they set out to make a fun action movie then that’s how I base my opinion.

The Entertainment Factor – Shocking twists, action sequences, tears, drama, laughs.

The Story – I’m all about story.  Love good stories.

The Overall Experience – Going to the movies is supposed to be fun.  Disappointing movies feel like a waste of time but some movies leave you with a satisfied smile on your face.

The Lasting Appeal – Movies we love stay with us forever.  If I’m still thinking about a movie the next day, it scores high in this category.

No Scores – I don’t give ratings or stars.  I make my recommendations based on who I’m talking to and what type of movies they like.

With that in mind, here are my favorite movies of 2009 or as I like to call them:

Five Awesome Movies That Are Awesome

Honorable Mention: Inglourious Bastards

5 – The Hurt Locker

I was sold 100% on this movie after seeing the trailer.  Then the positive reviews came along and finally the release date arrived.  The Hurt Locker is an intense movie and I loved it.  The premise alone pins you to the edge of your seat.  At any moment the bomb could go off.  Fantastic movie.

4 – District 9

Viral Marketing at it’s finest.  District 9 was one of the most unique experiences of 2009.  An ‘indy’ sci-fi action movie with an incredible story.  I put District 9 in the category of “Why didn’t they think of this years ago?”.  I was pretty disappointed with most of the big summer blockbuster movies but District 9 reminded me that you don’t need a massive budget to entertain.  You just need a good story.

3 – Up

My sister and I have seen pretty much all of the Pixar films together and Up was no different.  I knew it was going to be good but I didn’t expect it to nearly knock Toy Story off the top spot.  While Toy Story remains my favorite Pixar movie, Up is a very close second.  It was everything we’ve come to expect from a Pixar film.  It was funny, it had heart, it looked gorgeous and it entertained.  Bring on Toy Story 3.

2 – The Hangover

One of the funniest movies I’ve seen in theaters in years.  Ironically, I saw this the day after seeing Up so it was a pretty great movie filled weekend.  There is a tradition among people who enjoy a night out at the bars that is absolutely vital to a successful night. Pre-Drinking.  A tradition among pre-drinkers is watching movies together while you drink.  (Old School.  Dumb & Dumber. Superbad.) The Hangover is a worthy edition to an already stellar lineup of classics.  Welcome to the team!

1 – Paranormal Activity

The most FUN I’ve had in a theater in years and hands down my favorite movie of 2009.  I saw this movie in a packed house full of terrified people and I was one of them.  Every time the scene changed to their bedroom at night, the entire audience began shifting in their seats.  It was an amazing experience.  I feel bad for those who either waited to long to see it or are waiting for video.  You missed out.

So long 2009

2008 was a slow year for me.  I couldn’t seem to get to the theater enough but 2009 was a return to form.  More movies, more fun, more entertainment and most importantly, more inspiration.

Going to the movies is an addiction.  It’s an obsession I can’t live without.  I can’t to see what’s in store for 2010.

What!? Cool Short Film Lands Deal

November 30th, 2009 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies - (0 Comments)

panic

I’m always pumped when I hear news like this.  After the success of District 9, one of my favorites this year, it seems Sam Raimi has found the next big VFX filmmaker.  Federico Alvarez.  He directed a bad ass short film called Panic Attack.  Now it looks like Raimi’s Ghost House has offered the guy a sweet deal and his career is basically skyrocketing.

That is an awesome short film.  Guys like Alvarez and District 9 creator Neill Blomkamp are sources of extreme jealousy for me.  Not because of the success they’ve achieved but because they are gifted in the field of visual effects.  For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be able to create effects and animation from my home computer.  I’ll never be able to sit in a room and create a film like this without paying someone who knows what they’re doing.  I can’t draw.  It’s sad.  However, it doesn’t mean I can’t still dream this stuff up.  I’m a big fan of movies in general but I’m always excited when a new filmmaker hits the scene.  Especially effects driven directors like Alvarez.  I’m extremely curious to see what he chooses to direct first.

In other WHAT!? news, Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli’s new film about Area 51 is wrapped and has locked Paramount as a distributor.  I don’t think we’ll see a repeat of Paranormal Activity but if it’s another horror flick, it’s good news for horror fans everywhere.

The Athletic Nerd Movie Reviews

Before you ask, I do have friends but unfortunately I had no proof today.

I work for a large sports network and sports happen at night.  Therefore, I work mainly evenings.  So during the day when normal human beings are at work, I’m usually home with a lack of social contact.

It’s actually not that bad.  I use the time to write and work on various projects.  (More on that at a later time.)  A lot of the people I hang around with have non-human hours too but everyone was busy this morning.

So I went to the movies by myself.

I’ve been looking forward to seeing The Fourth Kind for a while now.  I’ve written about it a few times already. I think Paranormal Activity may have ruined it for me.  That movie seriously scared the hell out of me in theaters.  The Fourth Kind did not.

Unfortunately, one thing working against the experience was lack of people in the theater.  After all, only LOSERS go to the movies alone on Monday afternoons.  Speaking of which, dear heavy breather behind me… Really?

The first time I saw Paranormal Activity it was in a packed theater and I had an absolute blast.  Oh and for the record, I was with someone at that showing :)

Regardless of scares, The Fourth Kind is still a pretty great movie.  I’m a huge fan of aliens, UFOs and other topics covered on Discovery and A&E on a nightly basis.  (I like documentaries.)  I thought the approach was brilliant.  As an editor, I thought they did a fantastic job putting the movie together.  The ‘actual’ footage in particular was extremely well done.  The way they scrambled the video just enough to show you glimpses of super wide jaws and breaking bones.  It’s really creepy to watch and was pretty much the highlight of the movie for me.  Towards the end, there are a couple pretty great moments that were just plain cool.

I read a few reviews and everyone complained that it didn’t seem real.  Hello?  It’s a movie.  If you go in trying to prove otherwise, you’re guaranteed not to like it.  I liked it.  I think this will be a great movie to rent and possibly own down the line.  In fact, I’ll probably buy it for sure if they pack it with special features.

The only aspect of the film I thought was out of place was some religious references towards the end.  I’m all for the references but they seemed to come out of no where.  Some people may not make the connection but they’re in there.  It’s an interesting thought but they should have at least established it earlier in the movie.

Lets get back to the most important issue here.  Do I feel comfortable going to the movies by myself?  The truth is, I do it all the time.  Ironically my friends make fun of me for it.  The theater is 2 blocks away from work.  Why not?  It’s perfect!

A New Horror Trend?

November 1st, 2009 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies - (0 Comments)

paranormal activity movie review

I don’t have to reiterate how much I loved Paranormal Activity.

So did everyone else.  It’s about time we got a new horror film that isn’t a remake, re-imagining or sequel to an existing franchise.  It’s an amazing story to watch unfold as an independent filmmaker myself.  A guy takes $15,000 and makes an awesome horror film that has grossed over 60 million dollars so far.  Nuts.

Here were the numbers last week:

  • 1. Paranormal Activity – $22,000,000
  • 2. Saw VI – $14,800,000
  • 3. Where the Wild Things Are – $14,420,000
  • 4. Law Abiding Citizen – $12,713,000
  • 5. Couples Retreat – $11,097,000
  • 6. Astro Boy – $7,017,000
  • 7. The Stepfather – $6,500,000
  • 8. Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant – $6,348,000
  • 9. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs – $5,600,000
  • 10. Zombieland – $4,300,000

Here’s where I get incredibly excited.  About a month ago, a friend of mine from work showed me a trailer for a horror film called The Fourth Kind.  Sweet.  That trailer quickly made it’s way into my heart and I really can’t wait to see it.

I’m hoping that this will begin a trend I’ve been waiting years for. Original horror.  The producers of The Fourth Kind must be loving their lives right now with Paranormal killing at the box office.  Taking out a franchise like Saw with ease was a feat no one saw coming a year ago.  You simply assume that Saw will reign on Halloween year after year.  Not only did Paranormal win with less theaters, it beat arguably the best reviewed Saw film since the original.  Audiences have spoken.  Enough with tired franchises.  Bring some new blood into the game.

the_fourth_kind_posterThis Friday, The Fourth Kind opens with a ton of buzz and an audience craving more after being slayed by Paranormal last week.  It instantly benefits from a familiar style mixing home video with film.  While it’s not quite Paranormal or Cloverfield, it still has the same feel and that will fill seats.  And why shouldn’t it?  M. Night Shyamalan is my favorite filmmaker because he created original creepy films that still entertain me once every few months.  Originality like Signs (Which tops my list of favorite films by the way.) that really hit home as a filmmaker.  Years later, another original alien thriller is set to kick my ass in theaters.  I just hope it delivers…

If it does, we may be in for a golden age of new and original franchises.  I say franchises because let’s face it, they’re already talking sequel for Paranormal Activity.  Every studio wants to find the next Saw.  They may kill a few here and there but I say bring on the new franchises.  At least we’ll be able to see something different from time to time.

Speaking of Saw, I’m pretty excited to see that the ‘torture porn’ sub genre seems to be fading away.  People don’t seem to be interested in pure sight gags and gore fests anymore.  It worked for a while but it’s old.  That trend is over.  So long Torture Porn.  Hello new trend!

The Athletic Nerd Movie Reviews

Every summer, I get extremely pumped about going to the movies and experiencing the best ‘tent pole’ films that studios have to offer.

This summer will probably go down as a minor disappointment.

With a few exceptions such as District 9, Inglourious Bastards and Star Trek there really weren’t too many ‘experiences’ to be had.  Transformers 2 is a perfect example of this.  It was easily my most anticipated movie of the year as I loved the first film.  I sat in the theater opening day expecting to be blown away by giant robot battles and massive vfx action sequences…  Meh…  The whole movie was a big mess for me.  Too many robots!  Too many random coincidences.  Not enough story.  Not really all that fun to watch.

2009 was destined to become an off year.  Until Paranormal Activity arrived and kicked my ass.

Now THIS is what going to the movies is all about.

I saw the film in a packed theater full of people ready to be scared out of their minds.  The hype surrounding this film was so high that I wasn’t sure it could deliver.  I was wrong.  Paranormal Activity is my favorite movie of the year by far.  The entire theater was filled with gasps, screams and laughter that I haven’t experienced in years.  Every time the locked off shot of their bedroom appeared the audience started squirming. (Myself included)  You just knew something crazy was about to go down.  What makes this movie kick ass is that every terrifying moment builds on the one before it.  The result?  For the first time in a long time, I was scared in a theater.

XTRA: Paranormal Activity 2 Review

So many horror films these days rely on gore and visible killers.  It gets old really quickly and it’s about time someone stepped up and changed it up.  Comparisons have been made to ‘The Blair Witch Project’.  That movie didn’t scare me at all and really didn’t live up to the hype.  Paranormal Activity may end up being one of my favorite horror movies of all time.  It was so simple and so much fun to watch especially in a packed house full of people having as much fun as I was.  I was so good, I went back with a friend the next night to see it again.  It was just as good the second time around.  I can’t wait to own this flick on DVD.

For the last few weeks, I’ve made a few mentions of a horror script I’ve been working on.  A sequel to a short I wrote last year.  My experience with Paranormal Activity this week has vaulted that script to priority status.  Horror is quickly becoming the dominant type of story that I enjoy writing.  I want nothing more than to create an experience like that.  My hats off to the director, the actors and the entire crew.  What an awesome movie!
