Last week, I slept in…

With a limited amount of time to come up with a post that day, I decided to talk about that very thing. (Read the post here) I must have really needed an extended sleep that night.  As I wrote the post, it occured to me that something was missing.  I couldn’t figure it out at first but then I finally realized that what was missing was the feeling of guilt.

I knew I wasn’t going to be overly productive that day and normally, I’d feel terrible and anxious about the lack of progress but that day was different because I’ve mastered my time and schedule.

In short…  I win.

My career in television involves long hours and late nights.  I wouldn’t trade it for anything because I love my job but sometimes, it can get in the way of the giant list of projects waiting for me at home.  In the past, there were always instances where weeks would go by and I wouldn’t write a word or photoshop would remain dormant.  Stretches when editing was put off in favor of one more hour of sleep and revisions were delayed because I just wanted to watch TV.

What killed me was how guilty I felt about not working.  I felt like I had lost my passion for writing, films and design.

I’m an extremely laid back person.  I’m rarely angry and the only thing that REALLY frustrates me is tangled chords. (I’m not even kidding, I can’t stand it.)  Yet I always get agitated when too much time passes without satisfying my need to be creative beyond my day to day career.  It’s an addiction that needs to be fed.  I have to be productive or face the inevitable feeling of misery I despise.

I dealt with this guilt for 2 years.  When we finished Playing Through last summer, I decided it was time to take a break from it all.  I wanted a chance to regroup and focus on myself for a while.  My plan was simple.  I basically eliminated the deadlines and took the pressure off for a few months.  I went on a trip, I bought concert tickets, I had fun and eventually I stopped feeling guilty.

Now, recharged and full of energy, I started working again but there were some stipulations I set up for myself.

Take control of your daily routine.

I determined a good amount of work to do every day and stuck to it.  I think everyone has a limit and I had discovered mine.  I was no longer willing to lose entire days catching up on work.

Instead of putting things off and then rushing at the last minute, I now work a few hours every morning and I’m way ahead of the game.

I make lists of things I need to accomplish each week and tackle one per day instead of the entire list at once.

Guilt free social human being type stuff.

This new plan of attack was worth it because I finally killed the workaholic inside of me and increased my productivity.  The result of this glorious plan was a new found dedication to screenwriting, 3 new websites including this blog and a ton of free time for guilt free social human being type stuff. We’re now producing two films at once and yet I still find myself with free time to have fun.  I’m working on a new feature script while developping 3 separate shorts and yet I’m still able to enjoy a night off.

I think I felt guilty because I wasn’t in control and so the work became heavier and heavier top bear.  I’ll never go back to the workaholic slash guilt fest I used to be.  I’m more productive now than I ever was and not only has my passion has returned but it has doubled in intensity.

Most of all, the guilt is gone.

PS: I don’t miss it.

Designing Web Sites Is Fun

January 25th, 2010 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in 17 West | Design | Technology | Web - (0 Comments)

The Wake Up Call

My alarm goes off every morning at 9:30 AM.

Usually, I head into my office to turn my computer on and go back to bed to watch either the show I worked on the previous night (Sportsnet Connected) or something informative like CNN or Food Network.

Actually Getting Up

Around 10 o’clock, I begin to work on my daily routine.  I check my 5 email accounts, facebook, twitter and the day’s site statistics.  Then it’s time for news.  I have about 10-20 sites I check out on a daily basis that all revolve around film, television and technology.

From there I’ll usually write or edit a post on my blog.

The whole process usually takes around an hour.

Breaking New Ground

I usually have a list of things I HAVE to accomplish but for the most part, I spend the next hour making progress on screenplays, development work, photoshop projects and website maintenance.

Today, I used my time well.

Tons Of Updates

Last week I finished a million updates and new graphics etc…

Today, I spent my time networking and getting the word out.

  • I updated my twitter account with multiple tweets and links to 17west.ca
  • Facebook is a valuable tool I use to drive traffic to my sites.  Today I updated my status and uploaded new promotional graphics for our new short films.  Beyond that, I also revisited our Facebook Group and basically updated the entire thing.
  • I also included a few more pics from The Climb’s first location scout.  Check them out HERE.
  • I added a post on this site to announce the changes.
  • Even our YouTube channel got a status update.

It’s time consuming work that includes creating new and better graphics as well as dealing with various design challenges.

How much do I love Photoshop!

When I first began designing the sites, I figured my work would be over once the design was completed.  I’ve since learned to embrace the marketing aspect of web design.  It’s an important part of building an audience and it all adds up to a productive morning and hopefully some new fans of our websites and our films.

New Site Launched

November 27th, 2009 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in 17 West | Design | Filmmaking | Technology | Web - (0 Comments)

ericgamacheA week ago, we launched our third and final web site of the year.

ericgamache.com

I designed this site as a portfolio site for my business partner Eric. This new site showcases his films as well as his upcoming productions. As a working professional in the film/television industry, Eric is a vital member of 17 West.

When it came to designing a third site, I had to find a way to make it different while still maintaining an overall style across our mini network. 17west.ca remains our flagship site and has a very distinctive look and color scheme.  I wanted the new site’s look to be different yet familiar to those who have visited 17W and jaymckinnon.com

I’m definitely still new to the design world but I find the idea of design fascinating and try to learn everything I can to make our sites effective. (hopefully it’s working)  The idea here is to create enough content to drive people to all three sites as well as our social network pages.

I’ve now designed three seperate websites this year. I’ve learned more than I could ever imagine but I’m still craving more. I’m now completely addicted to Photoshop and Dreamweaver.  I’m almost sad that at the moment, I have nothing left to design.  Next year when we start ramping up our 2010 productions there will be a lot of marketing and designing to be done I suppose.  I have that to look forward to.

As always, I’d love to hear what you think about all three of our sites.  Leave a comment or send me an email at jason@17west.ca.

Self Branding Part 2

November 12th, 2009 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Filmmaking | Screenwriting | Technology | Web - (0 Comments)

Don’t forget to check out Self Branding Part 1 where I look at establishing an identity for this site.

This is a Photoshop painting I did a while back that fits the topic. That’s actually a picture of my real basketball net growing up.  I loved that basketball court.  Self Branding Part 2 deals with why I chose The Athletic Nerd as the title for this blog.  I couldn’t think of a better image that conveys that idea.

Here's a photoshop painting I did a while back that fits the topic. That's actually a picture of my real basketball net growing up.

So what is an athletic nerd?

The Athletic Nerd Movies Screenwriting Independent Film Blog

Recently, I was considering several alternate names for this blog. I felt that since most of the content dealt with film and television it should be represented in the title. I take a lot of care in selecting the perfect title for a new script or project. This is no different.

Some have asked why I chose The Athletic Nerd in the first place. Today, I will provide the answer to that question. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been associated with sports. As a result, people just figured that’s all I was about. In contrast, a separate group of people who know me well think of me as a nerd. For some reason there are many on both sides who were shocked to find out I’m both. Strange because it’s just… Me.

I know for a fact I’m not alone. How many athletes and sports junkies out there have found themselves type cast in this way. Likewise, there are nerds out there with killer pull up jumpers who are seen only for their inner geek. We’re not a rare breed of people. We’re everywhere.

Speaking personally, I consider myself a nerd first and an athlete second. It sounds strange given the fact that my career revolves around pro sports. I believe the key is finding a balance. I’m a nerd who plays sports. I’m a sports fanatic who enjoys video games and web design. I’m a film buff who may or may not be in shape. (It’s debatable.) Most importantly, I’m truly passionate about both ‘sides’ of my life.

Because of this, you can find traces of both worlds in nearly every creative venture I take on. It’s a unique approach I’m extremely proud of.

So why The Athletic Nerd? Because it fits perfectly. The name is stays..
