2 years ago, we launched 17west.ca.

Since then we have launched a variety of different websites to promote our work:

Each of those site’s have been given major updates in the last year.

It’s time to re-launch the main site!

As nerdy as this sounds, the new site is code named 17W11.  (This is The Athletic Nerd after all.)

The new design features a lighter look and highlights our work much more efficiently.

You’ll also find new film pages and a brand new upcoming section.  The new design will now fully integrate The Athletic Nerd with constant updates on all of our projects.

You’ll find a teaser image below.

Expect the new design to debut near the end of 2010.

There is nothing more exciting to me than developing a new story to be crafted into a screenplay.

New projects are always exciting as they challenge you to evolve as a screenwriter.  As I mentioned in an earlier post, this new project is NOT my idea.  Normally, I’m used to coming up with a concept and developing it myself.

This time, it’s Producer/Director Eric’s concept.

So we got together and spent a lot of time working out what the story should be.  Eric already had a rough outline done so we focused mostly on details.  This is my favorite part of developing a story.  It’s the time when you really work out what the world will be like, who the characters are and the overall style of the movie.

I’m extremely happy with the results.  This new tale we are developing is certainly ambitious but what excites me is that I’ll be writing in a genre I’ve never attempted before.  It’s a completely different type of story than I’m used to which makes it equal parts intimidating and fun.

The idea is to chip away at the script throughout the next few months and hopefully have a workable draft by the end of the year.

It will be one of 3 projects we are developing in addition to Strings which we are co-producing.

From there it’s all about planning, scheduling and budgeting.

To quote one of my favorite movies:

“The board is set.  The pieces are moving.”

I’m loving our new direction of planning for multiple projects.  We don’t have any solid plans to shoot anything soon but that doesn’t mean we can’t put in the work.

At the end of the day, it’s all about creating entertaining films that people will enjoy.  You won’t get anywhere unless you put in the effort and meetings like today are a part of that dedication.

It also helps that I love movies, screenwriting and independent film.

17 West Productions

A long time ago, I discovered Kwoon.  Essentially, a group of Kung Fu students got together and made 4 episodes of a martial arts parody… thing.  I think their ultimate goal was to get the series on network television but to my knowledge, it didn’t work out.

Strangely enough, it wasn’t the episodes that caught my attention but rather the extra videos they put on their site. Writer/Director Todd Roy took Kwoon on a massive tour of Comic Conventions and brought a camera along for a ride. (A nifty steady-cam rig no less.)

I bought the DVD as it promised to be packed with dozens of these videos in addition to the main episodes of the show.  As an aspiring filmmaker, what I learned was how much effort you have to put in to promote your films.  Team Kwoon did a pretty phenomenal job getting themselves noticed.  One particular video stayed with me to this day.

It was called No Money Marketing.

In it, Todd humorously demonstrated various marketing tips like writing your website on currency, sticking promo stickers to cats and food items and more…  It wasn’t meant to be serious but he had a point.

You have to do whatever it takes to gain exposure in the industry and get your projects noticed.

These days, we  have a lot more tools at our disposal than he did. Thanks to the social networking explosion, small production companies like 17W can market themselves for virtually nothing.   The upside to this strategy is limitless and all it costs is time.

Over the last year, I’ve logged a ton of hours building a tiny network for 17 West Productions.

Not to mention our own personal Facebook pages and IMDB profiles.

With every single one of those sites linked back to 17west.ca, I hope that people will stumble upon us and stick around for a lot of interesting content and updates.

I’m the first person to admit that we don’t score thousands of page hits a day.  However, I can sleep at night knowing we’re well represented on the web.

You have to start somewhere right?

PS: If anyone wants an extremely reliable web hosting service, I highly recommend www.startlogic.com.  Awesome customer support for idiots like me and simple to use. (Also mention 17west and we get 10 bucks!)
