Low Budget Short Films

Source: The Weather Network

I can’t handle it!  I’m freaking out again!

What if it rains!

We are literally days away from shooting our next short film, The Climb, and I’m all over the weather forecasts.

When we made Playing Through a few summer’s ago, I was a nervous wreck knowing the weather could ruin the entire production.  When you are making a low budget short film, you don’t get many second chances. You just have to hope for the best and deal with the challenges when they cross your path.

We were extremely fortunate that it only rained once during the shoot and only caused minimal delays.  It’s understandable that I’d be worried.

How can you shoot a short film on a golf course when it’s raining?

Forget logistics…  The story would have had to be changed dramatically.

The Climb is different.

When I wrote The Climb, there was rain in the script.  A lot of the film took place during a heat wave and the rain would have added a pretty great visual touch to the final scene.  However, this is low budget filmmaking after all and you can’t control the rain so I wrote it out of the script.

Now, I’m looking at the weather hoping that if it does rain, it will linger long enough for us to capture that scene the way it was originally intended to be.

Who knows?

The point it, when you are making a short film with little money, it pays to have a backup plan in case the weather doesn’t cooperate.

There will always be challenges on a film set.  Plan ahead for any and all changes you may have to implement.  Most importantly, problem solving is literally half the battle when you’re making a low budget movie.  However, sometimes the weather can strike and make the movie better.  You never know…

I just hope it’s not super windy!  I don’t have a wind backup plan yet!
