Should The Avengers Get An Oscar Nomination?

RISE OF THE OSCAR WORTHY SUMMER MOVIES

Movies vs Films…  I like to think my taste in movies falls somewhere in between.  So while I LOVE the summer movie season, I’m also a big fan of the dramas that regularly populate the awards season each year.

I’ve seen The Avengers three times.  I love that movie.  Critics love that movie.  Audiences around the world love that movie.  But… Is Marvel’s The Avengers an Oscar contender?

The most fun I’ve ever had watching the Oscars was the year Return of the King dominated.  I felt like I was cheering for the Blue Jays. (My favorite sports team.)  Eleven times they announced that fantasy ruled the cinematic world that year.  I was filled with a sense of pride.  It’s fun to cheer on the movies you love.

On the other hand, sometimes your favorites aren’t even nominated.  The Dark Knight did NOT receive a best picture nod which was incredibly frustrating for me.  Realistically, I didn’t expect it to win but I felt that Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece deserved at least a nomination.  Thankfully, the Academy did recognize Heath Ledger’s legendary performance as The Joker.

Should The Avengers Get An Oscar Nomination?

With Gladiator being a notable exception, there haven’t been many summer action movies in contention come awards season.  I suppose Avatar kind of fits the bill but it was released in December.  Still, the landscape has changed a lot since Peter Jackson received the night’s final and most prestigious award.

With Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise leading the way, superhero movies have evolved immensely.  It’s a series of films that made all of us believe comic book movies can be Oscar contenders.  Perhaps it’s time the Academy took notice of the blockbuster entertainment being served in the Summer months.

Want to spice up the Oscar broadcast?  Stick a summer horse in the race if it deserves it.  What’s the worst that could happen?

Having said that, before that plan can work, the movies must deliver.  For every Dark Knight there is a Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen after all.

Should The Avengers Get An Oscar Nomination?

DOES THE AVENGERS DESERVE OSCAR TALK?

First and foremost, The Avengers delivered on impossibly huge expectations.  It was a FUN movie.  Marvel’s universe collided on the big screen and crushed box office records in the process.  To say that Joss Whedon’s film is an overwhelming success is an understatement.  90%+ on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics and the fans and over billion dollars grossed and counting.

The Avengers is a movie that nearly everyone seemed to love.  That’s an award worthy movie in my books.  Again I stress I don’t think it would win but a little comic book love is overdue isn’t it?

To me, the brains behind The Avengers deserve an Oscar nomination JUST for pulling it off.  Merging 4 larger than life heroes into one movie that delivers is an achievement worth recognizing.  Not only that, the seamless blend of action, character and humor was so much fun to watch…  Three times.

Of course, two summer movies sneaking in would be a bit farfetched.  But what if? What if TDKR and The Avengers are deserving?

XTRA | The Dark Knight Rises Trailer Top 5 Moments.

It’ll be interesting to see the results after The Dark Knight Rises launches this July.  Will Christopher Nolan’s Gotham enjoy the same fate as Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth?  Part of me thinks The Dark Knight Rises may prevent The Avengers from getting a nomination.  Is this a year we see not one but two comic book movies honored on Oscar night?

…  Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

For now, The Avengers will continue tearing up screens around the world.  I’m already looking forward to adding the blu ray to my collection.  I’m thankful The Avengers exists especially after such a long wait to finally see it.  It exceeded my expectations and will most definitely appear on my Top 5 movies of 2012.

But will it be in the Top 5-10 come Oscar time?  I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t but wouldn’t it be cool if it was?

If Only I Was Part Of THE HUNGER GAMES Massive Fanbase | The Hunger Games Review 2012

A LITTLE HYPE GOES A LONG WAY

I’m a jealous film fan.  Every time there is a big blockbuster event that I’m not excited about I find myself wondering why.  It’s a feeling every movie fan craves.  Anticipation.  Every time I see a movie I’ve been looking forward to I feel like I’m 7 years old and it’s Christmas Eve.  But movies like that aren’t released every single weekend.  You have to be patient.  The wait is hard enough if you’re a casual film fan but for die hard film buffs it’s a long road.

I follow every project on my ‘Hype List’ closely.  Every time a plot synopsis is released I read it, every time a still or a trailer is unleashed I watch it over and over again.  A hardcore movie fan’s daily mood is determined by the details revealed about the movies they anticipate.

XTRA | 38 Movies To Look Forward To In 2012

For me, the wait for The Dark Knight Rises, Prometheus & The Avengers has been excruciating.  I’ve endured months without any news at all but the clouds are lifting as their release dates approach…

But I didn’t feel that way about The Hunger Games.

If Only I Was Part Of THE HUNGER GAMES Massive Fanbase | The Hunger Games Review 2012

I didn’t read the extremely popular books before seeing the films but the sheer amount of people lining up to see it was hard to ignore.  The franchise’s built in fan base would easily push the film to number 1 at the box office.  But the intrigue and popularity of the movie lured film fans like me to the theater as well.  And records were shattered.

Aided by strong word of mouth and critical praise (85% on RT), the film made 155 million in it’s first weekend at the box office.  Now that’s how you kick start production on the inevitable sequel.  The Hunger Games wasn’t on my must see list.  I was curious but I wasn’t in line on opening night.  In fact I purposely avoided the lines.

The entire Twilight train passed me by and I wasn’t even at the station and The Hunger Games was no different.  But I saw Twilight regardless just to see what the fuss was about.  It’s an okay franchise but definitely not my favorite.  Sadly, I’d put The Hunger Games in the same category.

When The Dark Knight was released years ago, I followed it’s box office totals closely like it was my film.  I was proud to see it do well.  I’m sure fans of The Hunger Games are just as proud of this solid adaptation.  Suzanne Collins’ tale of a world revolving around teens slaughtering each other is full of tense moments and avoided all the cliches I was expecting to see.  While I didn’t read the book, reactions online suggest the filmmakers did a fantastic job bringing the books to life.  I guess I’ll have to take their word for it for now.

During the movie, I felt like I a new member of an exclusive club and all the inside jokes were flying over my head.  For fans of the books, there must have been tons of references and moments they were looking forward to.  I experienced the movie as something completely new and it was just…  Okay.  I think I was expecting more 1 on 1 battles in a movie about 24 kids out to kill each other.  It also took an hour to get to the games.  Minor gripes as there was still a lot of action in the film.  Something I’m sure fans adored.

You see,  that’s where the jealousy comes in.  I wish I had read the books that EVERYONE is talking about.  I wish I was a part of the club.

…  I suppose I am a part of the club in a small way.  I’ve seen a good movie now and as I write this review, I find myself wondering what happens next.  What will happen in the sequel? Maybe I’ll read the books instead of waiting for the next film to be released.  Perhaps this franchise has won a new fan after all?

Barsoom, Helium, Zodanga, Tharks, Jeddak, Dejah, Therns & JOHN CARTER

…AND THE MARTIANS (OR BARSOOMIANS) CALL HIM VIRGINIA?

First impressions don’t always determine your overall opinion of a movie.  Some movies deliver above and beyond your expectations even if they’re impossibly low.  Even though John Carter is a solid movie, it didn’t really exceed my low expectations.

First and foremost, John Carter is a light and fun movie with a lot of cool battles, visual effects and scattered laughs.  It’s not a horrible movie.  There are more than a few entertaining moments.  But it’s one of those movies that a lot of people will be on the fence about.  It’s never a good sign when the trailers aren’t mind blowing causing people to wonder if it’s worth a shot.  I try to give films a shot regardless of the hype they build (or fail to build).  So I caught John Carter on opening night because I love big blockbuster adventures.  It was a 9:55 showing and there was about 35-40 people in the theater… Yuck.

Here’s the thing, when you watch a Science Fiction movie based in a new world, there are always words and names that you must learn.  Discovering a new world is a big part of why movies like John Carter are made.  People like to visit alien worlds and become immersed in places they’ve never seen.

Mars, or Barsoom as the locals call it, is definitely like nothing you’ve ever seen on the big screen but holy crap it was difficult to follow at first.  The prologue attempts to give the audience a brief history of the conflict on the red planet but it’s overkill in terms of names, locations and terms you have to remember.

Once John Carter arrives on Mars it gets a little worse.  Many names sounded the same to me and I couldn’t really remember them all until they were repeated several dozen times.  As the movie ended, I asked my friend if he could name 5 characters not named John…  Didn’t happen.

However, John Carter seemed to pick things up pretty quickly though.  Although all he had to do was drink some water…  Maybe it’s just different for people who didn’t read the books.

Tharks, Therns, Tars Tarkis, Tardos, Tal, Thoris, Than…

Those are just a few of the ‘Ts’.  Say that 5 times fast and then try to remember which one is which.

I’m willing to concede that going in, I had no clue what the story was.  A part of that has to do with the marketing campaign.   For example, You get a sense that Therns are bad but they don’t really give you a lot of information in the actual movie, let alone the trailers.  So these guys drain the life out of inhabited worlds through manipulation and control?  Did I get that right?  How does that translate into energy?  I hear the water is pretty magical.

It’s a little strange that these all knowing beings who believe themselves to be immortal don’t seem to be aware that they can be shot.  These are minor gripes but it adds up.

Trying to get into this world was hard for me.  I kept snapping out of it.  Before the end, I was simply waiting for the next action sequence which is most definitely the strongest element in John Carter.  The action is pretty fantastic with a variety of different fights and battles.

There is an awesome scene when our gravity defying hero goes bananas on an army of Tharks. (The multi limbed green folk with tusks)  While he fights, the intensity is ramped up as he thinks about the loss of his wife.  It fuels each and every swing of his sword. It’s really great stuff.

MORE WOOLA PLEASE

Woola | John Carter 2012 Movie Review

My favorite part of the movie was John’s speedy and loyal ‘dog’ Woola.  What a great character.  I laughed every time that creature was on screen.

Here he is, ready to take on all comers.

Let’s do this!  I’ve got your back John!

Woola Dog JOHN CARTER | John Carter 2012 Movie Review

At the end of the day, there were many things I liked about John Carter but not enough to add up to a truly memorable experience.  If you’re on the fence about seeing the film in theaters my advice is to wait and rent the film On Demand in a few months.  I suppose fans of the series will line up but early box office doesn’t indicate they did which is unfortunate.

Let’s hope the film has legs.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol Lights A Fuse | Review

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED BRAD BIRD… FOR THE MOST PART

J.J. Abrams‘ Mission Impossible 3 is by far my favorite in the series but I had high hopes that Ghost Protocol would raise the bar even higher for the franchise.  The truth is, this new installment does raises the bar on multiple levels but it also falls short in a pretty major way…

When Ethan Hunt says ‘Light the fuse’ and we are treated to a gorgeous opening sequence.  I was thrilled.  Brad Bird is an amazing director and you can tell immediately that he is right at home in a live action world.  From there we get tons of awesome action sequences and stunts that make this series great.  The entire sequence in Dubai is absolutely remarkable and especially brilliant on the IMAX screen.  When Ethan steps out to scale a giant skyscraper, you definitely feel like you’re over 100 stories in the air.  It’s pretty cool.

And then to follow it up with a sweet car chase in the middle of a vicious sand storm?  Not too mention a great prison escape in the opening act.  Well done Mr. Bird.

XTRA | Inside the Edit: Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol Trailer

The rest of the film is full of action and a couple twists I highly enjoyed.  Everyone on Hunt’s team fits in although I did miss Luther’s humor.  Thankfully, the film more than makes up it with Simon Pegg’s Benji who is in fine form once again here.  The big addition to the franchise is Jeremy Renner.  I thought they did an amazing job incorporating him into the story and making his character more than just a member of the team.

What I really loved about Ghost Protocol were the constant glitches in the team’s plan.  Literally, nothing goes right and they are constantly forced to improvise with the threat of nuclear war imminent.  In the past, Ethan would outline an impossible stunt involving an aerial leap of some kind and then we would watch it play out.  That worked in the previous 3 films but this time they are out of their element with no support.  It makes sense that their plans would be flawed.  I thought it was a great way to introduce the different stunts.

GREAT ACTION.  GREAT LAUGHS… BUT…

What I did NOT love about the film was the villain.  Part 3 brought us Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s brilliant Owen Davian.  Mr. Davian was ruthless and his battle with Ethan Hunt was as personal as it gets.

‘What’s his name?’ from this new movie is barely involved in the film.  He rarely speaks and is disconnected from the tale.  While his plot to start a war between the U.S and Russia is believable, movies like this are only as strong as the villain.  That is where Ghost Protocol fell short for me.

Perhaps I put too much pressure on the film to surpass moments when Davian screamed;

“You don’t think I’ll do it?!”

There is nothing like that in M:I4.  Nothing except a random middle aged man with superior fighting skills and ONE henchman who has little to do.  It’s sad but it doesn’t completely break the movie.  I just think it would have been better if I cared about the villain instead of trying to remember what his name was.  Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol is a worthy addition to the franchise and a fun action movie.  It rarely slows down and looks gorgeous on the big screen.
