Chronicle, Action Figures & The Super Power Dream

CHRONICLE DELIVERS BECAUSE WE ALL WANT TO FLY

I don’t think I was much different than most boys who grew up during the golden age of action figures.  Obviously there are still plastic heroes amongst the youth of today but it’s not the same.  When I was a kid, the video game age was just beginning.  Remember when the original Super Mario Bros. changed everything?  It seems like to long ago now.  Today, you can stand in front of Xbox Kinect and control characters on the screen with gestures instead of a controller tethered by a power cord.  Raise your hand if you saw that coming.

Back then, I got my thrills from carefully staged action figure battles and the power of my imagination.  Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles faced off against battered He-Man hand-me-downs.  Food Fighters drove hot wheels cars and joined forces with G.I Joe to fight evil.  Transformers protected strange planets from the invasion of creepy mind controlling Muppet Babies.  (Happy meal toys no less.)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Action Figures

Note: Those are MY Ninja Turtles.  I’m 28 years old and I still know exactly where they are in my home.

These amazing battles played out outside the walls of Castle Greyskull and in the war torn lands surrounding The Technodrome.  The forces of good arrived in the Turtle’s van.  Sometimes, they would hitch a ride on Optimus Prime.  Many times, wars were waged in the treacherous waters of the bath tub. The possibilities were endless.

I wish I could remember all the stories I created back then.  I spent hours continuing the adventures I began the previous afternoon.  Each day the stories would become more elaborate.  I learned to tell stories in the trenches of my bedroom surround by my most beloved toys.

Having said that, I don’t mean to suggest that kid’s have no imaginations today.  They have so many amazing MORE sources of inspiration.  Action figures are but one of dozens of outlets for children to spin their epic tales.  When I was a kid, action figures were all I had and it was a time I’ll always cherish…  As a side note, toys are so much cooler today.  I can’t imagine what my brain would have come up with if I got my hands on them 20 years ago when I depended on my action figures for entertainment.

ONE ACTION FIGURE REPRESENTS YOU

It was always inevitable that my favorite action figure at the time would become ‘me’.  It was always the most powerful hero of them all with super powers beyond imagination.  Flight, fire, ice, wind, telekinesis, speed, invisibility, INVINCIBILITY…  You name it.  Sometimes the character would be blessed with one power.  Other times, my hero of the day would have them all.

Even then I wished I could fly…  I still do.

Chronicle brought me back to those days.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH SUPER POWERS?

Chronicle asks this question in a way that feels more realistic that many superhero movies that came before it.  Ordinary teenagers are given an incredible gift but they don’t immediately have to deal with an arch nemesis, villain or monster.  They have to deal with the reality of their own lives and how these powers will fundamentally change them.

I felt right at home watching Andrew, Steve and Matt learn about their abilities.  If you buy into the story, the first half of the film will have you smiling ear to ear.  Where is the first place you would travel if you could fly?

But that’s not what makes Chronicle such a memorable film.  It’s the the journey of central character.  What would happen if a boy who has felt powerless his entire life learns that he is more powerful than anyone?  Suddenly social awkwardness, an ailing mother, an abusive father and a lonely existence becomes the fuel that ignites the anger within.  It’s a unique twist on the super power tale that shows you the unbelievable perks as well as the tragic pitfalls that powers would bring.

When I was a kid, I don’t remember thinking about messing with people in department stores.  Super powers granted you immortality, fame, excitement or an escape.  But what would you have done if it actually happened?

Director Josh Trank does a remarkable job that, for me, succeeds on every level.  The second you start asking yourself what you would do, the movie is a winner because you’re invested.  Not only is the film a fantastic entry into the found footage genre but it’s a solid film that fits nicely in between District 9 and Super 8 on the shelf.  My only real complaint was the short running time but that was cancelled out by an awesome and worthwhile final act.

I loved it.  Go see Chronicle.

Why Ninja Turtles Made Me Cry

September 16th, 2011 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Featured Posts | Movies - (0 Comments)

You're two minutes late dude

When I first started this blog in 2009, it was called ‘After Then and Before Now’ and called 17west.ca home.

The blog has a new home and a new name (The Athletic Nerd) but the content is very similar.  (There’s just more of it now.)  When I moved the blog, the plan was to transfer all the existing posts over to the new format.  One of them was called…

SPLINTER GOT EMOTIONAL!

turtles

That fearsome fighting team dominated my life for years.  I had all the action figures, vehicles, books, stickers, bed sheets and more.  I still have a giant Rafael action figure in a box somewhere in my apartment.  I should seriously look into finding the pictures of me dressed up as Raf for Halloween.  I loved the Ninja Turtles.  You can imagine how I felt when I was heading to the theater. This is what I love about films.  You can truly become immersed in a world that could never exist. (Or can it? I’m sure they are experimenting with ooze in a sewer somewhere.)  Whenever you get that involved in a story it’s only natural for you to become attached to the characters.

Let’s get back to the heroes in a half shell.  I’m in the theater and I’m totally wrapped up in the film.  (I’m talking about the first outstanding motion picture experience.)  There is a scene where the turtles gather around a fire and Splinter appears before them.  He offers some heartfelt words of wisdom to his sons.  Just seeing them cry got to me.

“I love you all, my sons…” Says a ghostly Splinter.

Are you kidding me?  What normal kid from my generation didn’t get a little choked up during that scene? I lost it.  I don’t even feel bad about it.  Maybe I’m alone but to date that is the only scene in the history of cinema that made me cry.  (Note: This statistic is based on theater viewings only.  There have been other instances that I am not as comfortable admitting to.)

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie 1990 Splinter

It’s every filmmaker’s goal to reach audiences in some way.  Whether it is to make them laugh, cry or scare them until they cry, there is always a plan.  When it comes to screenwriting, I try to be mindful of that fact and work as hard as I can to create the same attachment in my stories.  There’s no guarantee it works every time but the effort remains.  It’s little details that count.  Kind of makes me wonder if the filmmakers sat around laughing about the kids destined to cry during that scene…  Guilty.

PS: I was SEVEN cut me some slack.

All Time Best: Let's Do This Movie Moment

Many movies have a singular moment when the main characters stand up and make it happen.  ‘Let’s Do This’ moments in sports movies usually occur in the final huddle or the night before the big game.  Like when Mox pumps his team up after Coach Kilmer is ousted.

Action movies are full of these moments.  Some are full of impact and excitement like when Gizmo rocks the Rambo head band.

Others can be calmer but just as effective like when Marcus and Mike ride together all the way to Cuba to save Marcus’ sister.

My pick for the All Time Best ‘Let’s Do This’ Movie Moment is from the world of comedy.  In this case, lives are not at stake, the world is not in peril and an evil villain is not at large.  No, in this case, the call to action is because of…

Pizza.

All Time Best: Let's Do This Movie Moment | Movie Blog

What happens when you casually mention pizza to the most obsessive pizza fans in the history of fiction?  You get the all time best ‘Let’s Do This’ moment courtesy of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

MICHELANGELO WANTS PIZZA

Apparently mentioning pizza bestows levitation powers to the heroes in a half shell…  I suppose it makes sense.  It does mean a lot to them.

“Wise men say, forgiveness is diving but never pay full price for late pizza.”

What’s your favorite ‘Let’s Do This’ movie moment?

The Athletic Nerd Movie Power Rankings

Go to any major sports website and you will find Power Rankings.  A popular ranking system that lists every team in a league from best to worst.

Since I work for a sports network, it makes perfect sense to take that system and rank my favorite movies of all time.

Except I’m doing things a little differently.  These won’t be updated weekly. (That would be ridiculous) However, you will find links to stories I’ve written on the films in addition to trailers and bonus posts.

We start with 16-30.  Click here for 1-15.

Saving Private Ryan

I made a couple war movies when I was in high school.  I think every film nerd did.  To me, Saving Private Ryan is the definitive war film.  Hanks, Spielberg and a phenomenal story.

Star Wars

I can’t wait to get my hands on the complete series on Blu Ray.

Pulp Fiction

Like millions of film fans, I’m completely addicted to Quentin Tarantino’s films.

Transformers

I’m a fan of Michael Bay.  I had so much fun watching this movie.  I can’t think of a better compliment to give the film.

The Athletic Nerd Movie Power Rankings

Forrest Gump

The perfect movie to watch on a lazy day.

Varsity Blues

This movie heavily influenced a basketball screenplay I wrote in high school.  Love ‘The New Twitter End Zone Dance’.

The Sixth Sense

Someone ruined the end of this movie for me.  I still loved it.

The Last Samurai

I thought this movie was fascinating.  Well written, well acted and tons of amazing action.  My kind of movie.

Tommy Boy

What can you say about Chris Farley?  One of the funniest people who ever lived.

The Social Network

Nerds.  It’s a trademark on this site and I loved every second of watching the creation of Facebook unfold on the big screen.

There Will Be Blood

Daniel Plainview is one of my favorite characters of all time.  Amazing performance by Daniel Day Lewis.

Old School

One of the best Pre Drinking Comedies.  A classic.

Paranormal Activity

My favorite movie of 2009.  The most fun I had in theaters in a long time.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

I grew up with Ninja Turtles.  I love Ninja Turtles.  I’m obsessed with Ninja Turtles.

Note: What’s with the voices in this trailer?

The Lion King

A wonderful classic Disney movie.  One of the best.  I love cartoons.
