Fast Five Is Rock Solid | Fast & Furious 5 Movie Review | Movie Blog

WE’VE COME A LONG WAY FROM THE DAYS OF
TRANSPORTS FULL OF DVD PLAYERS

[UPDATE] The movie made $83,639,000 in it’s opening weekend!  The biggest April opening of all time.

The first Fast & Furious movie came out when I was in high school.  Way back when I knew tons of people who hung out in front of coffee shops with their cars.

I had a 1996 Cavalier…  It was bright red with a sweet spoiler!

Note: This isn’t my exact car but it’s a fair representation of what it looked like.

Ahem…  I don’t know anything about cars but a few of my friends ‘souped’ up their rides quite nicely.  Needless to say, when I saw The Fast & The Furious, I hitched a ride with them.

Leaving the theater that night was awesome.  All I wanted to do was paint the interior of my car silver and install some custom tail lights.  In the end, all I got was a red shifter knob.  (Is it even called a shifter knob?) I used it to get the most out of the 52 incredible horses that powered my vehicle.

A HIT & MISS FRANCHISE IS REBORN

2 Fast 2 Furious was okay but without Dom and the gang, it was lacking.  I’ve never seen Tokyo Drift out of protest because  I wanted the original team back together.

I got my wish with the entertaining Fast & Furious a few years ago.  It wasn’t amazing but it brought the franchise back to it’s roots and paved the way for a new film that truly made me smile.

FAST FIVE HAS COOL CAR CRASHES!

Fast Five Is Rock Solid | Fast & Furious 5 Movie Review | Movie Blog

If you loved the first film and tolerated the fourth, Fast Five will make you fall in love with the franchise all over again.  From the opening shot, this movie doesn’t pretend to be anything less than an action packed thrill ride.  As far as story goes, it’s your basic ‘we don’t like that guy so let’s steal his money’ scheme.  Mixed with a little ‘holy crap a ruthless FBI agent is after us’ and you’ve got yourself a heist movie!

Joining the team for this entertaining chase through Rio?  Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson!

At first his presence is a little cheesy.  Then I realized the entire franchise has a history of cheese and quite frankly, I’m okay with that.  I didn’t go to the theater to get a deeper glimpse into Brian and Mia’s relationship. I wanted cars.  I wanted fights.  I wanted explosions.  The Rock fit right in.

Fast Five delivers everything and more and even tries valiantly to establish a ‘family first’ theme.  To accomplish this, the film reunites the best characters from the entire series and successfully reboots the franchise as far as I’m concerned.

Something producers confirmed by stating that Furious is destined to be a heist franchise.

I’m okay with that.  If the next installment packs in as many chases and action sequences as Fast Five, fans like me are in for one hell of a show.

Mild Spoiler: Especially if the scene after the credits is any indication.

If people ask me if I would recommend Fast Five I would instantly say yes if they loved the first film.  If anything it’s worth it to see The Rock vs Vin Diesel.  Not to mention the crazy train sequence and the incredibly intense and car crushing finale.

The 2011 summer movie season is officially underway and we are off to a great start.

Only this time, when the movie ended I hopped aboard the subway and walked a couple blocks!  Take that Civics!

When you’re down, sometimes the trick is to curl up with a great movie and forget about what’s bothering you.  It certainly helps me and it occurred to me the other day that I always tend to turn to the same movies in times of sadness.

We all have tough days every now and then.  What movies cheer you up?

Here are 10 of my personal favorites:

Note: Obviously, everyone’s list will be different but I just realized what an incredibly random list this is. Oh well, these movies continually do the trick.

The Rundown Ep. 12

The Rundown Ep. 12 | Movie Headlines | Movie Blog

Awesome Super 8 Trailer!

Finally, one of the most anticipated movies of the year has a trailer!

In typical J.J. Abrams style, the 2:21 trailer reveals nothing about the alien but still rocks!  Personally, I don’t want to see what the creature(s) look like before movie opens.  Awesome trailer.  Awesome concept.  Awesome style.  I can’t wait.

The studio released an official synopsis as well.

In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth – something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

Sweet.

Super 8 movie looks awesome

Fast Five Can Fly?

The original Fast & Furious is still, by far, the best in the series. The 4th entry was tolerable because it reunited the original crew after 2 disappointing sequels.  Now it looks like we may be in for a fairly entertaining ride in this year’s Fast Five.

Cars, explosions and Vin Diesel vs The Rock?  Nice.

One problem.  There’s no way Dom and Brian aren’t dead after leaping out of a car falling 50 billion feet from a cliff…

Nah, it’s totally realistic.  They make it for sure.

Speaking Of The Rock.  Doom?  Again?

Do we need a new Doom movie after the disastrous original?  I think we do.  Give someone else a chance to get it right.  Take some time and give us a new vision of the demon infested mayhem.  I’m willing to forget the first film if they deliver something hardcore fans of the game will adore.

But reboot it.  No sequels please.

I Trust Commissioner Gordon

Gary Oldman made a couple interesting comments regarding The Dark Knight Rises while promoting the awful looking Red Riding Hood.

It’s a great story — you look at The Dark Knight and think ‘how’s he going to top it?’ but I think he has.

At this point, I’ll take any info I can get.  Click here to read more including his comments about Bane!

Insert Memory Wiping Joke

Men In Black 3 movie

Men In Black 3 appears to be a complete disaster which is hugely disappointing.  I didn’t hate the second film but the first was awesome.  The third film, which has already begun production, is STILL having script issues.

I’m still hoping all these rewrites will make the movie better instead of simply patching plot holes.  With all the time travel that’s involved I’m finding it hard to look forward to this movie.  Will Smith or not.

Read more about the script issues here and here.

Smurfs Movie…  Stop Existing

Ummmm…. No? No thanks…

New Ninja Turtles Cartoon!

On to GOOD NEWS regarding beloved cartoons I watched as a child.

I’m 27 years old and I couldn’t be more excited for a new Ninja Turtles cartoon.  The fact that Transformers and Thundercats are each getting new shows as well makes this a very exciting time for people of my generation.

However, I wonder if young people these days are being cheated out of original shows they will grow up and call their own.  Instead they are simply getting remakes of shows that already had their time…

I’m not complaining though.

Win Win Trailer

This could be good I suppose.  I’m a fan of Paul Giamatti.

Cameron Diaz Can Be Funny Too

Bad Teacher’s premise is a little strange and could potentially be a complete mess yet it still looks pretty funny.

Check out the red band trailer too .

Mortal Kombat Rebirth Images

The upcoming web series featuring a much grittier vision of the Mortal Kombat world began shooting and IGN has some pretty fantastic stills from the set.  It looks awesome and I can’t wait to see the first episode.

The Rundown Ep. 3

December 17th, 2010 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies | The Rundown - (0 Comments)

The Athletic Nerd Movie Blog: The Rundown Movie Headlines

This week was dominated by RETURNS.

First up is a trailer I was sure I wouldn’t like…

Jack Sparrow returns

A fourth Pirates of the Caribbean always seemed a bit forced to me. However, this trailer for On Stranger Tides has reminded me why the first 3 were so entertaining.

Johnny Depp’s incredible portrayal of Jack. Are we in for another hilarious and action packed adventure? I’m prepared to state that I no longer think it was forced.

I’m genuinely excited to see the film now.

Vin & Paul returns

Did we really need another Fast & Furious? Nope.

Am I excited about Fast Five? Bet your ass I am.

THE LINK: Slashfilm

I understand that many people out there never ‘got’ this series. I loved the first film. I thought the second was decent sequel but I missed Dom. I’m choosing to ignore the third installment in this case but the fourth felt like a true sequel with the original gang returning.

Now we get the best of all 4 films AND the addition of The Rock!

I’m a fan of the series. I’m thinking this will be an entertaining ride.

John Favreau not returning for Iron Man 3

This took me by surprise.

Iron Man has lost it’s Happy Hogan. Director John Favreau stated that he is ready to tackle something different that “lights a fire”.

Marvel and I both came of age together. The years that we shared were a pivotal experience. Kevin has a firm grasp on the many franchises and how they all interweave and I am happy that I had the opportunity to establish the world that these characters can now play in…. ‘Iron Man’ has given me tremendous opportunities and Kevin and I are enjoying a lot of momentum in our careers thanks to the ‘Iron Man’ films. I look forward to seeing what others can do playing in the same world.

THE LINK: Slashfilm has the full details

Do you think he’ll return to play happy regardless?

Spielberg returns to War

Saving Private Ryan is a perfect movie in my eyes.

You can never really doubt Steven Spielberg. All of his movies have a unique charm. Check out the synopsis for his new film WAR HORSE and tell me you don’t think it’s a perfect story for him to bring to life.

The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse—an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure. “War Horse” is one of the great stories of friendship and war—a successful book, it was turned into a hugely successful international theatrical hit that is arriving on Broadway next year. It now comes to screen in an epic adaptation by one of the great directors in film history.

Johnny Depp & Gore Verbinski return

It’s fitting that this post began with Johnny Depp returning to a Gore-less Pirate franchise and ends with them teaming up regardless.

The project in question is an animated western called RANGO.

I can’t say I’m a massive fan of this trailer but I’m blown away by how detailed the character work is. It looks spectacular.

See for yourself.

All Time Best Movie Moments

I’m aware this is probably one of the most random topics for an All Time Best post but I really feel bad for poor guy.

The scene is from The Rock and it definitely ranks as one of the most unfortunate death scenes any character has ever suffered.

The Rock Gas Rocket

In case you haven’t guessed by now, the scene in question involves a no name character who unfortunately demonstrates the awful effects of being exposed to VX Poison Gas. Essentially, he’s a part of a team looking to steal 16 rockets to hold San Fransisco hostage so Sean Connery can reverse-escape Alcatraz. (Otherwise known as… The Rock)

During the theft, one of the shiny green balls breaks releasing deadly gas into the room.

The results aren’t pretty. Basically, your skin melts off.

Be warned.  I’ve included the clip so beware of spoilers and/or gross face melting.

You’ll feel bad for him. Who wouldn’t?  I wouldn’t want to be exposed to VX gas.  That’s probably why the movie’s premise worked so well.  No one wants an entire city to suffer what this poor guy does.

If that doesn’t qualify as a high ranking ‘unfortunate’ movie death scene, I don’t know what will.

PS: I have a feeling this post will get a sequel someday soon.  I’ve already thought of more.

Thought of a better one? Be sure to comment.  I’m sure there are millions of examples.
