2010's All Time Top 5 Movies The Athletic Nerd Movie Reviews 2010

Last year, Paranormal Activity won the honor of 2009′s best movie because it stuck with me the longest.

Could Paranormal Activity 2 make an appearance this year?  Nope.  It was definitely a worthy sequel though.

It’s important to note that I’ve missed a lot of notable films that may or may not have cracked 2010′s top 5.

127 Hours, The King’s Speech, True Grit, Let Me In to name a few.

Regardless, I have to go with what I’ve seen and I’m pretty happy about my list.

The Athletic Nerd’s All Time Top 5 Movies of 2010

5. The Fighter

Review: I Showed Up 12 Minutes Late For The Fighter

This film bumped the excellent Monsters from the top 5 right at the last minute.  I loved both films equally but Christian Bale’s amazing performance was unforgettable.

4. Toy Story 3

Review: Toy Story 3 & The Crazy Laughers

What can you say about Pixar? Every year they deliver something new and wonderful.  I love that franchise and I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the trilogy.  The last 10 minutes alone almost had me in tears. (Much like Ninja Turtles did back in the day.  What is it with me and toys?)

XTRA: Yeah… But It’s Pixar!

3. The Social Network

Review: Nerds & The Social Network

Everyone thought this movie would fail when it was first announced.  How good can a ‘Facebook’ movie possibly be?  I didn’t think it would be very good.  Now it’s one of my favorites and a serious Oscar contender.

2. The Town

Review: The Town Has It All

Underestimating The Social Network was a big mistake.  I’m happy to say it was a mistake I did not repeat with The Town.  I knew it was going to be fantastic.  Every trailer I saw kept bumping it up my list of must see movies.  It delivered one of the best heist movies I’ve ever seen.  I loved The Town.

XTRA: 2010 All Time Best Movie Moment

1. Inception

Review: Inception Ignites An Idea

Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece will be dissected and studied forever.  Hopefully, it has changed the summer blockbuster for the better and more intelligent and action packed films are coming our way.  From the minute I heard about this film I was fascinated.  How could a film build up so much hype and deliver?  That’s why Nolan is a genius and my favorite filmmaker. Inception is a remarkable achievement.

All Time Best Movie Moment Of 2010

When selecting the best movie moment of 2010, you have to take a lot of things into consideration.

It’s different for everyone.

  • What made you laugh the hardest?
  • What scared you the most?
  • What had the most impact on you emotionally?
  • What surprised you?
  • What blew you away?

For a while, my favorite movie moment was going to be ‘the kitchen cupboards’ from Paranormal Activity 2. It was completely unexpected and had me smiling ear to ear long after it was over.

That was my first instinct.

The more I thought about it the more I was drawn to one of my favorite movies of the year.

The Town

Not only is it an incredible movie but it was full of powerful moments that I could pick for this post.

Strangely enough, I decided to go with one of the funniest moments in the movie.

The Nun Showdown

All Time Best Movie Moment Of 2010

Obviously, I can’t find the actual clip of the event in question but it happens after Ben Affleck and his crew flee a heist dressed as nuns.

An incredible gun fight and car chase ensues and just when they think they’ve lost their pursuers, they come across a cop on his break.

The showdown is hilarious.  The cop is essentially face to face with a group of semi automatic carrying nuns.

He’s alone and pretty smart as he casually looks the other way.

No way he wanted any part of what they were doing.  He chose to live.

It was a subtle way to say

“La la la, I didn’t see anything, la la la”

It’s an amazing moment that stuck out as one of the best in 2010.

The Town Has It All

September 21st, 2010 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies | Reviews - (0 Comments)

Review: The Town Has It All (The Town 2010 Movie)

I was desperate for another action movie with a good story since Inception is the only film that really brought it this summer.

Finally, I got my wish.

The Town

First of all, The Town is one of the best movies of the year and should be up their on voters ballots when Oscars roll around.  Above that, it’s also one of the best heist movies I’ve ever seen.

To summarize, I absolutely loved The Town.

Review: The Town Ben Affleck

The best action movies ALWAYS have incredible stories to match the guns, explosions and brawls.

What I loved about The Town was how well the heist and chase sequences integrated into the story.  When you care about the people involved it makes the action that much more exciting and interesting.

Ben Affleck and Jeremy Renner and Jon Hamm steal the show here. Every 5 or 6 minutes it felt like another bomb got dropped.  Another twist in the tale.  Gradually, the stakes continue to rise.  By the time you I saw those creepy nun masks come out, I already had the film in my top 5 for 2010. It’s that good.

Then the action starts and it’s every bit as entertaining as the story itself.

  • Ruthless gun fights.
  • Gritty car chases.
  • Vicious stand offs.
  • Explosions.
  • Punches.

…  Nice.

The Town is exactly what I needed after a summer of disappointments.  Like The Departed, it’s a look into a fascinating world that will stick with you.

I think it’s a lock for a best picture nomination especially now that they nominate 10 movies. I don’t think it will win but it’s such a well made movie that it deserves to be honored.

People will say that Ben Affleck is back.  They will say Jeremy Renner and Jon Hamm played incredible supporting roles.  They will say The Town is one of the best films of the year.

I couldn’t agree more.

The Town kicked ass.

PS: Honestly, how awesome is this trailer!

10 Flicks: Awesome Movies To Look Forward to in 2010

The summer movie season was a bit of a let down for me.  I freely admit, I didn’t get out to see that many movies but there really weren’t many MUST see movies out there.  I had some opportunities to see films like Robin Hood, A-Team, The Expendables and Machete but I just couldn’t get excited enough to go.

“I’ll catch them on DVD or OnDemand.”

The ones I did see weren’t really the game changing summer movies I’ve come to adore.  INCEPTION came along at a time when we all needed an incredible and original summer blockbuster but it stands alone this year.

If you were to ask me today what my top 5 films of 2010 are thus far my list would look like this:

  1. Inception
  2. Toy Story 3
  3. TBD
  4. TBD
  5. TBD

Dear First 9 Months Of The Year… Ouch.

However, 2010 seems to be mounting a come back with a ton of must-see movies on the way.  The next few months will see studios release their big guns and Oscar contenders and I’ll definitely be in theaters for as many as possible.

The following list may not include 10 definite Oscar picks but they will be entertaining.  (At least I hope they are.)

Here are my top 10 2010 movies to look forward to:

Unstoppable

Skyline

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 1

Buried

Hereafter

127 Hours

Paranormal Activity 2

Monsters

The Town

The Social Network

PS: It’s pretty hard to find videos on Youtube without ADs now. I tried.

New Movie Trailers To Be Excited About

It’s been a disappointing summer so far.

Normally, I’m beyond excited to watch all of the year’s biggest blockbusters but I’ve been left underwhelmed.

Inception and Toy Story 3 have been highlights but today I’d like to focus on some fantastic looking movies that have yet to be released.

I saw a bunch of fantastic new trailers over the last few days.  Enough to merit a post at least.

Many of these are dramas and I’m sure there are a ton that I’m missing but I’d say it’s a pretty good start!

There’s a lot to look forward to!

Which movies are you looking forward to?

The Social Network

The Town

Buried

The Company Men

Stone
