The Athletic Nerd Independent Filmmaking Television Technology

The Athletic Nerd turns 1 in less than a month!

I’ve been busy planning some new content for that week but for now, I thought I’d look back at an action packed first year.

This blog originally began as ‘After Then & Before Now’.  A blog about my production company 17 West Productions.  It wasn’t long before I realized I had much more to say and the site evolved to become The Athletic Nerd.  A movies, screenwriting and independent film blog.

Slowly, the site established an identity with various regular features and content.

Features like:

Most recently, the site introduced Movies That Changed Everything.  A series devoted to films that inspired my filmmaking aspirations.

Over the course of the last year, I’ve also spent a great deal of time enhancing each of the categories I write about.  You’ll find a ton of posts in topics like:

Recently, I added an Interviews section with several planned in the coming months.

More independent film.  More movies.

I’m addicted to the entire process and it’s honestly been a blast to write about.

In addition to all of that, The Athletic Nerd still remains focused on 17 West’s films and the filmmaking process.  On this site, you can find out all about our films and upcoming projects.

  1. Playing Through
  2. The Climb
  3. Strings

Not to mention Reviews, Technology and much much more.  If you’re an aspiring filmmaker or a film fan then hopefully The Athletic Nerd has something for you.

It’s definitely been a productive year and I’m looking forward to evolving this blog even further in the future.

Basically, I’ve got big plans for this site that include continually updating with new and original content daily.

In the coming months, I’m going to be shifting my focus towards screenwriting in order to finish up some projects and prepare for some ambitious scripts I want to tackle next.  I’m also editing our latest short film, The Climb in addition to several new features and content for this blog.

It’s going to be a busy year.

Have any ideas for posts?  Want to contribute to The Athletic Nerd? Toss me an email: jason@17west.ca

So dear reader, explore and let me know what you like (and dislike) about the site.  I’m always up for suggestions and look forward to making this a better site.

What!? Spider-Man Reboot?

January 11th, 2010 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies - (0 Comments)

4 weeks ago, everyone was talking about the ‘risk’ James Cameron took on Avatar.  Will the movie make enough money to justify it’s gigantic budget?  Will it deliver on all the technical promises?

Starting today, people will be talking about the risk Sony and Marvel are taking with their massively successful Spider-Man franchise.

After an eternity of script problems and delays, they have officially parted ways with director Sam Raimi and the Wall Crawler himself, Tobey Maguire.  Essentially, this means a full reboot of the franchise with a completely new direction and cast.

I’m split on this one.  I love, LOVE, Spider-Man.  The first two movies were amazing but I hated the third.  So maybe it’s time to shake things up a bit.

On the other hand, it’s widely known that Sam Raimi had issues with the script for the third film.  Sony and Marvel forced Venom into the story and the results were messy to say the least. (Although, I still blame Raimi for the musical number.  What was the purpose of that?)

Either way, a brand new Spider-Man movie is on the way.  Time will tell whether the new director and Web-Head will spin an entertaining tale for the world.

I just hope Sony and Marvel will be able to deliver on the promises it made today.

What!? Cool Short Film Lands Deal

November 30th, 2009 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies - (0 Comments)

panic

I’m always pumped when I hear news like this.  After the success of District 9, one of my favorites this year, it seems Sam Raimi has found the next big VFX filmmaker.  Federico Alvarez.  He directed a bad ass short film called Panic Attack.  Now it looks like Raimi’s Ghost House has offered the guy a sweet deal and his career is basically skyrocketing.

That is an awesome short film.  Guys like Alvarez and District 9 creator Neill Blomkamp are sources of extreme jealousy for me.  Not because of the success they’ve achieved but because they are gifted in the field of visual effects.  For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be able to create effects and animation from my home computer.  I’ll never be able to sit in a room and create a film like this without paying someone who knows what they’re doing.  I can’t draw.  It’s sad.  However, it doesn’t mean I can’t still dream this stuff up.  I’m a big fan of movies in general but I’m always excited when a new filmmaker hits the scene.  Especially effects driven directors like Alvarez.  I’m extremely curious to see what he chooses to direct first.

In other WHAT!? news, Paranormal Activity director Oren Peli’s new film about Area 51 is wrapped and has locked Paramount as a distributor.  I don’t think we’ll see a repeat of Paranormal Activity but if it’s another horror flick, it’s good news for horror fans everywhere.

What!? Monopoly Plot Revealed?

November 12th, 2009 | Posted by jasonmckinnon in Movies - (0 Comments)

Monopoly Plot Revealed | Movie Blog

I would like to begin with a quote I read on Joblo riiiiiiiight before I was about to call it a night.  It’s an article about the proposed live action Monopoly movie from director Ridley Scott.  Here is the highlight for me:

“They have this big world and this game — it’s the most famous board games in the world — and it just really came out of the whole ‘Alice’ thing. I took the approach of thinking of the main character falling down a rabbit hole and into a real place called Monopoly City … It was the re-engineering of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ that got me thinking and then with this it came around full circle and I was able to utilize that. That’s a big world. They were searching for that.”

What!?  There are so many damn puns running through my head right now my brain is about to explode.  Give me a minute to think of the best possible joke to use in this situation.

In the mean time, I’m torn on this movie.  I can’t decide whether or not this is a complete disaster or something I should be secretly excited about.  My older sister and I still play Monopoly often.  I’m eagerly awaiting  a ‘normal’ version to come out on my iPhone so I can buy it.  (I could care less about the ‘World’ edition or whatever it’s called)

[Update] I have now purchased Monopoly for my iPhone and it’s awesome.  I highly recommend it!

Every single person who reads this article knows that board inside and out.  We’ve all grumbled when someone lands on Boardwalk first.  Every one of us then brags about how ‘profitable’ Baltic and Mediterranean are with hotels.  You’ve been there, admit it.

I think I’m going to file this movie under ‘curious’ for now.  Movies that take you to another world can be pretty fun and entertaining flicks.  Movies that take you to a beloved world you’ve known for a million years are usually phenominal.

Of course, it could also be a train wreck…

I’m back on the fence.

I recommend heading over to Joblo and reading the whole article.  Interesting stuff.

jailfree

PS: There’s a joke in there somewhere.  Frankly, it’s late and I’m tired.  So I’ll just make an observation…  Is there anyway the Monopoly guy WON’T be creepy in this movie?  Seriously, I can see him appearing out of no where to escort you to jail.  He would look at you with a disappointed expression that makes you feel terrible about yourself.  But you have an ace up your sleeve.  You pull out your get out of jail free card which is really a copy of a restraining order Barbie placed on him.  You threaten to go public, he would cave then climb in his bad ass ride (or horse), blast some ACDC and you won’t here from him again.  Until he shows up asking for a money to pay the legal fees on a paternity suit or something…  Nah.  He wouldn’t be an ACDC fan.  I see him as more of a Yanni guy myself.
