Speaking from experience, it can definitely be frustrating to look at your daily traffic and see 10-20 visitors per day.
When I first started The Athletic Nerd, I knew it would be hard and by no means did I expect thousands of daily visitors early on.
Still, it can be incredibly disheartening when you check your Google Analytics account and only 7 people have been to your site. (Especially when you represent at least 3 of them.)
However, I continued to post everyday in the hopes that people would eventually show up.
I focused on content and put a ton of effort into graphics and the overall look of my blog.
Slowly, traffic began to rise. 30 visitors per day…
As I developed the site, certain regular features began to emerge and I created a routine for myself. Posting regularly and constantly improving my blogging skills brought my daily visits above 50.
Many people who start new blogs have no doubt been intimidated by Search Engine Optimization. It may be tough but it’s essential if you want to attract the search engines. At least download the All In One SEO plugin for WordPress. It’s a fantastic place to start especially if you are just starting out.
Google.
Your site isn’t going to get very far if the search giant isn’t aware of your existence.
A while back, I started going back and tweaking my old posts and focusing on keywords and other SEO techniques.
- I improved my titles.
- Added alt text to my images.
- Carefully selected my keywords using Google’s Keyword Generator.
- Formatted my pages better using proper headings and tags.
- I edited my content to better reflect the audience I want to reach.
- I tried every trick in the book to increase my visibility online.
It worked.
I ended up revising over 100 posts and the next day my traffic took off. I have no clue if it’s coincidence or something I did. This is why I’m not a professional web designer.
100 visitors per day… 150 per day… 200 per day and rising.
I’ve also seen my page hits skyrocket but I’m not satisfied yet.
This energized my commitment to learn more and continue making this site better.
Better features. Better content. Better blogging.
The goal for my first year was to average 100 people a day. A modest goal that I achieved early.
The Athletic Nerd’s 1 Year Anniversary is approaching quickly…
Time to set higher goals.
